Arriving home with the car, turning the ignition key to shut off the engine but it keeps on running!!
What could be wrong?
Some electrical issue with the ignition switch?
Meanwhile, before fixing it, what is the safest way to turn it off?

Can you pull the fuel pump relay, or is it carbed?

Keeps running for 15 second, 30, 60 seconds or will sit there and run until you get out of the cockpit and do something?

I seem to remember something about using the wrong tail light bulb causing this problem? Unless I am confusing this with another issue, couldn't find any info on a quick search though. Something about using a single filament bulb instead of a double filament keeps the ignition circuit alive when the key is off.

I bet it's the ignition switch. Pull the hot wire off the coil to shut it down.

emergency engine shut off, put in 5th and stall it then go pull wires off the coil.

That was me.

If you have the wrong bulb in one of the taillight sockets, and you leave the turn signal switch up or down (depending on where the wrong bulb is) the power from the "parking light" feature will feed back through the ignition switch to the ignition and fuel injection systems...

Mixing up power and ground will make for very very weird symptoms!

Has any electrical work been done on the car since the time it wasn't having this problem? If so, that's the first place to look.

pull the voltage regulator and see if it shuts off, if so the alternator is shorted, if not probably the ignition switch

what fuel system are you running?

What happens when you step on the brake after the key has been shutoff?

That was me.

It can happen on carb'd cars as well. Not sure about the 914s, but it has happened on an early 911. Ask me how I know dry.gif
