As much as I'm a fan of electric cars, I don't think a 914 is the right platform for various reasons. Looks nice though.

My car gets about 90 miles on a 27kWh battery. This car has 23 kWh, so I guess you could expect around 75 miles of range.

I think there is a 912 conversion company out there.

But why? Sometimes people do things just because they can and believe in it, not because it makes sense. Battery pigs need HUGE tech to work efficiently, and they require charging by our grid... which is still mostly coal-powered in the US, and then very complicated disposal.

I appreciate the growth of electric. But until it makes more sense, an efficient engine makes more sense.

agree.gif not my thing ,leave electric for lastest tech and remember how the power is made to drive them, there are other down sides and most don't even look @ the big picture.

Posted by: Dave_Darling Dec 10 2018, 08:23 PM

Why?

Why not?

I know one person who did the conversion specifically because he didn't have to pay bridge tolls on his daily commute. (Carpool lane at that time meant zero toll; not sure if that's the case now.) Others do it because it's interesting.

Some of our power locally is renewable--and even more for people who have solar installed.

If someone wants to have an electric 914, I think that's cool! I'm not sure I would own one, mind you, but it's not my car...

I have been casually following electrics for some time, only as an observer, no hands on experience. The availability of life PO batteries is a huge performance leap over lead acid. Not as energy dense as the Tesla battery technology but pretty good and practical for a city runabout

This car seems very solid with a lot of the “right” components - AC motor, lifepo’s good controller and charger.. my quess is that $18000 is about what the electrics cost, not including labor and the car. Seems like a good deal. Performance could be increased by adding more batteries. This is a rather small battery pack. My quess would be this car would have comparable performance to a stock 1.7.

914’s make easy conversions because the motor can mount directly to the trans and the chassis form factor makes battery storage pretty easy. Much easier than the 911 chassis.

IMHO You can get a lease return Fiat 500e for half that price. The more you learn about electric cars, the more your better off buying a real one.

agree.gif depends what your goals are.

find out if the car came from Florida - there was a guy in Ft Myers that built one that looked like this.

Posted by: gereed75 Dec 11 2018, 07:51 AM

Agree that if your goal is just to go electric economically for normal transportation, a fiat or Nissan Leaf is the way to go. There are other reasons to go converted 914, just like there are other reasons to go 914 instead of Miata or BRZ if you’re looking at sports car at ownership

Regarding range, there are 2 key factors that are missing on that car:
1. Regenerative brakes - from my experience with 2 electric cars that I own, this accounts for about 25% of your range, especially if you drive in the city or over hills. I estimate it's range to be about maximum 50miles.
2. Battery temperature management - batteries are very temperature dependent. You can't charge them to full capacity when to cold, can't charge them fast when hot and you can't get all the energy out when too hot or too cold. This will reduce the mileage on cold days by 20% to about 40miles.
The car also has only a 120V charger that will charge at about 1.5kw so if you need a recharge during the day it will take you many hours to charge that 23kwh battery. (Full recharge is 16 hours)

......and WHY is yellow top Optima battery in listing?

Porsche...the world's most profitable car company has invested over 2 Billion in electric car development. That is not on a whim.

Coal accounted for just over 30% of power generation in the US, so not mostly. Natural Gas to generate electricity is way cheaper.

I just got back from Germany. The new 911's are already being configured for electric power in the future.

I agree with others, that car is old tech. Why buy that unless it is for "novelty" sake.

Posted by: Unobtanium-inc Dec 17 2018, 04:08 PM

For the record, Dr. Porsche invented the electric car, so seeing them go back this way is in some ways only natural, since that was his dream along. Granted it took over 100 years to get back to it.

This time of year it's all the lighting, wipers, accessories, heat/defrost that will all be on except when parked at work. The duty cycle and duration must be impacted.

Posted by: Rand Dec 17 2018, 05:14 PM

Elon is a friend. I love all the electric shit. BUT it does not belong in a 914! Everything wrong with this! Yeah, let's pludge a bunch of old dead old batteries into a car that was light and make everything that was right with it wrong. This is a 914 forum, right?

Right - Wikipedia says it's actually 17.4% in the US for coal.

Coal energy is basically 0% in California and more than half of California's energy production now comes from renewable sources.

Virtually all new cars will be electric in 10 years (or less). The switch is going to happen pretty quickly.

Well....the change is inevitable and is coming. It just hasn't hit the economic tipping point quite yet.

It will happen as quickly as the range on the cars increases.....but it is coming.

Pretty easy decision for Porsche. It is a natural progression for them.

BTW....I was scolded in Zuffenhausen.

I always knew is was Por-sha.

It is not TAY-CAN it is TIE-CAN.

Why can

Posted by: Rand Dec 17 2018, 06:33 PM

Electric can. But it cannot. This is a a car forum. Not for engines that don't need fuel.

That's just ignorance. It' Porsche. If you don't get the last syllable, it's on you.
