I'm considering buying this car, you may recall that this is the 2nd GTI I've been looking at. The first one has some issues that the seller is trying to get sorted. I found this one, same price, looks to be in nice condition.
Find as much as you can wrong with it, please.
I didn't see any major flaws on the exterior, but I did see that both front doors' door cards need some love, the fabric is coming off them. Also, the shifter knob needs replaced.
From my previous query, I know that I need to look out for chain tensioner and water pump issues.
What else? I know it's no 914, but I also know that a lot of us Porsche guys have/had many VWs as well!

I like it, but the stuff that might be wrong you never see it. I purchase mainly used cars, and I presume that I have to do all the maintenance on it when I get them. So unless you have a trusted mechanic that did the work, then I don't even trust the stealership for any service. And I know mechanics at the dealership.
I go and do it all, change all the fluids, and anything else I might need to change, and if it is close I change the timing belts, etc..... Clutches would be the big ? facto.r On this one the 6 speeds have issues with the clutch slave cylinders. So you need to change the fluids on the brake / clutch system at regular intervals. It is also a plastic part so ECS tuning makes an Aluminum replacement part. Also with the oil filter housing, lots of little details that might need to be worked on. Our EOS also needed coil replacement, as one was bad, so I did all 4.
If you do all your own work it is not to bad cost wise, if you have to pay a mechanic, it adds up fast.
You will want a VagCom also, as they're are lots of little tweaks that the Vag makes easy to do.
After I got past the initial refresh to get it all back into proper order our EOS same engine and trans has been rock solid.
Only issue on that car is the passenger side airbag on the seat. Wiring connectors never work right, and even the repair fails, and the dealership will flat out tell you it might work.
Most, if not all, reputable dealerships offer extended warranties. Buy one, it's insurance against whatever the previous owners might have done, or not done, to the car. Anf they're great cars.

I do plan on fluids right away, and was going to have my local German car shop check the tensioner and water pump. If the tensioner isn''t the latest revision, then it would be replaced. Probably leave the water pump alone if it doesn't show any signs of leaking. I haven't priced a clutch, hopefully its not too bad if necessary.
I'm really not too scared, as long as there are no lies about the car. CarFax seems fine, no accidents reported is always a plus.
I bought a car sight unseen last year just from photos (with 110K miles) and had it shipped. I ran a carfax on it I think it was $40 for the report. The carfax showed really good maintenance records, a recent clutch job, new exhaust, recent brake service, and no accidents. This gave me the confidence to do the deal and it turned out to be a good one at a good price. Well worth the $40 fee to get the history on the car upfront.

But...I bought the CarFax on the last 2009 GTI, and it read better- 70k miles, 1 owner, but it wouldn't stay running, had a few more dents than shown in pics, dead battery, broken mirror...just a lack of any detail from the seller. They're working on getting it right, but my faith is poor.
We bought a brand new VW Fox back in 1990 it was a 1988, sat on the dealers lot for 2 years moved to the back of the lot. It had lots of issues, broken mirror was one of them. Got the car for a steal, and went to a junk yard and got a mirror, lol, I would not be worried about a mirror, or minor dents. I would be worried if it was in the dealership every other week for some history issue.
We have a Ford tall transit at work that has been in the dealership for the last 9 months off and on. We have had it for 18 months. I would not want to purchase that one if they paid me to take it.
I have an 06, FSI motor.
The door panel is common, wasn't hard to take apart and reglue. The soft touch rubber coating on the handles also wears off, around $30 each for new.
Shifter same problem. Expensive from the factory but there are a few chinese replacements available. In fact, I found alot of VW plastic parts are made in China.
There are some really nice factory fit Android head units out, 7" 8" even 9".
The seating position is kinda funky. If you haven't yet spend some time driving.
I've had a MKII GTI, my sis has a '16 GLI, and had a '13 before that. She's had a couple Cabriolets and I had an '83 in high school and then there was the stray '80 pickup I had in the early 90s.
Would the seating position relate to any of those? The only one of those that was tough for me was the pickup.
Probably like the GLI, butt low knees high. It's more pronounced than any other car I've sat in.
MK6 is essentially a MK5.

That's a pretty nice looking car. I like 'em, and have thought about a TT coupe. But they all seem totally ragged out. The one you're looking at looks good in the pics, but I'd be interested to see if its as presented.
I need a car that's a little more versatile than a TT, however. And, yes, those are all 2.0 Turbo cars. I'd forgotten how much I like driving the small turbos. Uber-tuneable and just a blast to drive!
The problem I have with VAG cars running TSI motors, is carbon build up in the intake ports. Since there is no gasoline running through the intakes, because of direct injection, carbon builds up in the intake ports.
Then standard procedure to remove this carbon, is blasting it with walnut shell media. You don't want to know how much this costs.
So...it's been a long while. I finally purchased a car at the end of April, then instantly went on tour. Just got home and had some time to drive it.
