914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Machining tolerances for boring out Mahle cylinders to 96mm

Posted by: seanpaulmc Jan 7 2019, 08:21 PM

Looking to get a set of original 94mm Mahle 2.0L cylinders bored out to 96mm. What are the recommended tolerances for giving to the machine shop for this diameter?

Thank you,

Sean

I was going to do the same but it was recommended to just buy new ones from European motor works. The cost is the same and it was hard to find a machine shop to bore out the old ones.

You'll need to give them your new set of pistons so they can do it right...usually the new pistons come with an info sheet for tolerances...

agree.gif We do a lot of 3.2 to 3.4. the cylinders should have a spec sheet. I think they charge us $75 a jug.

The machine shop needs a torque plate to do the job, if they have to make one it will cost more than new jugs from EMW.

I build engines in Canada, we Canadians are cheap asses so I was going to make a torque plate, but with new jugs from EMW it's just not worth it.

Find a shop that handles motorcycle work....they'll likely have the torque plate and be familiar with aircooled jugs...

Not worth it, I'm cheap so I have looked into local, but loss of my time alone would kill any savings. YMMV.
