The 2019 WCR will be held in the San Gabriel Valley east of LA!
Official Event Sponsors: 914 Rubber, 914 Werke, Driven Racing Oil, PMB Performance, Sierra Madre & Stoddard
We have planned a fun filled weekend with some great events and spectacular drives including a Friday morning run through Angeles Crest Hwy (Route 2) to Newcomb’s Ranch and Glendora Mountain Rd. on Saturday. Sunday morning will have us Parade into “Super Car Sunday” before another amazing drive through the canyons of Malibu down to Pacific Coast Highway. Google Map links will be provided in future posts along with a full weekend schedule.
As in the past, there will be official T-Shirts, Swag Bags and the Awards Banquet. Dedicated overnight security will also be arranged for our cars.
Our host hotel is the Marriott Courtyard Monrovia located on Historic Route 66 and we have secured 30 rooms to start at a group rate of $139.00 for the three nights of June 6-8, 2019 inclusive.
You will need to PM me with your email address and number of attendees and I will send the booking instructions directly to you in order to secure the group rate.
Please note that should rooms book quickly; additional rooms will be made available. Conversely, if the bookings come slowly, the amount of available rooms will be adjusted downwards. If you are undecided, just go ahead and make a reservation. Better to have too many rooms than find out closer to the event that they are sold out.
Keep checking this thread for continued updates and we are looking forward to hosting you for what is sure to be a great event!

Hey Dave. Is that the Mom who is also your sister, or the one that has most of her own teeth? It’s hard to keep up with you mouth breathin’, Walmart shoppin’, toothless carneys. I hear that you’re thinking of moving. Let me know if you want to borrow my compressor to air up the tires on your house. Talk to you soon.

Thinking about sending "Anna" a DM to see if she would bring a few of friends to head up the Entertainment. Should we put it up to a Vote?

Relax, Skippy. Just Blue6 and I going back and forth with some friendly banter. No one is threatening your Mom, your wife or your status as an SJW. Carry on.

Reminder:

Jeff is right, Burbank is closer but Ontario might be easier and cheaper.
Burbank has less options from SETAC, plus the traffic on the 210 through Pasadena is a nightmare most rush hours.
The drives Jeff has planned are epic though.
Hope you can make it Kevin.

I took a look. Alaska would be my preferred carrier. 5+ stinking hours with a change in SJ. I'll check out Ontario. I flew in there 2 years ago. Nonstop. I don't care for southwest.

Ontario is a great airport but there rates from Sea-Tac and back are $$$$$ Your going to hit traffic so pick your poison. Best rates will be LAX and it’s pretty close.

I’m looking for some rides. Going to fly in and rent a car. Julie will be with me too so we’ll either have two of us hitching or following the pack in a rental. After driving a F350 to the last tour most anything I get from rental will be sporty. Turk has some caymans, but I’m not sure if they are worth the $.

Saturday's departure will be at 9:14am in keeping with tradition.
Sunday is early at 7:00am, however for those that would not like to Parade in to Super Car Sunday can straggle in later for the departure to the Beach Run.
Once everything is confirmed, an event schedule will be emailed to all participants. A final itinerary will not be posted publicly to this thread. For those that have not PM'd me an email address, please do so do be included on the distribution list.

It just feels like the rear of the car needs more steer. Maybe I need to stiffen up the shocks a little. Might lower the rear just a touch too.
Not sure if I can make the Phoenix Club this time but I'll be at the Automotive Driving Museum on the 16th.

The entire drive is only 36 miles and 53 minutes from the start point. This route offers something for everyone as the 4 Bangers are going to love the twistys and the Big Motor Conversion cars can really "open Up" especially on the Sweeps on Upper Big Tujunga Rd.

For those that have yet to make their reservation, please do so so we can add more rooms. Credit cards are not charged until the weekend so no reason to not get your reservation taken care of.

Just to clarify, we are not privvy to the booking information other than the actual # of rooms reserved.
If you are booked and have a confirmation you are good to go. For those that have not completed your reservations, we recommend taking care of that ASAP so you are not on the outside looking in.

Not much today but in the last few weeks I replaced the transmission tail housing, install a clutch and pressure plate, cleaned & lubed a very dry but smooth throw out bearing, bolted the engine and transmission bolted together and finished the wiring to the fuel pump. So if my daughter wasn't visiting this weekend I might install the engine but I'll get some stuff done this week and on the weekend even with her visit.

Just some ancillary info for those that come with others who don't want to drive or don't have cars from out of state.
There is a Gold Line Train station nearby where if you want to do a bar crawl in Pasadena and not deal with the traffic it is a cool deal. Cost about a $1.75 from that station to Pasadena.
I know this is a car thing but it is an option for significant others that don't have rides or want to do something else and not deal with parking or traffic later in the day during the week.

If anyone is venturing out on Friday, old town Monrovia has a weekly street fair. Myrtle ave closed and parking is real tough. You can get a Lyft ride from hotel to old town for a buck by adding code GOMONROVIA in the app.
Lots of bars on Myrtle and some decent food, restaurant row is next door to your hotel on Huntington. There is a dive bar that has an awesome “house band” Pat O’brian and The Priests of Love (YouTube it) every weekend a few blocks east on Huntington called First Cabin for anyone needing some music while not talking cars.
Wish I still had a car I’d be all over this.

Lawrence,
Didnt I ship you yours (Larges were "back ordered" day of)? I have that down in my notes. Also I am pretty sure I have a spare large I can bring down if it never made it to you.
Also again BIG thanks for picking up and dropping off the shirts, Its a shame you had an emergency and had to run back home..

With only 2 months left is the T-shirt pre-order and event registration ready to go?
Concerned... I remember my T shirts were an ordeal and I planned for 2 months production.. I literally got them the day of.
And collecting money and registration info for event passes and such takes time.
I stopped and met Jaimie to pick up the shirts, drove them up to Mammoth, and STILL didn't end up with one.
First of all its "JAIME" and I've been waiting for more information. but the design is done and ready.

Good question Eddy...WOW...didn't think we would hit so many WCR participants this year, much less 50 cars.
If just some of these locals decide to join (even for a day) we can possibly hit over 75 cars.
We may need to file a traffic plan.

How are you counting cars? I plan to try to bring my 914 but I don't recall being asked or providing that info, of course maybe I did provide that info and just don't remember. I still have a lot of work to but it is actually withing the realm of possibilities, unlike any past WCR I've been to. And I'll be there 914 or not.
At any rate, it looks like the turn out is going to be great, probably the largest I've been to. Thanks for all the work and effort. Jim

Go back to Post #2 on Page #1 of this thread for an updated attendee list. I believe 5 of the cars in the total are not 914s:
2 986s 1 Cayman 1 964 1 968
I have read the list of attendees but I was wondering how you know if they are bringing a 914 or their Camry. Jetta, Ford or what ever? Unless I am misunderstanding it, the list is just world members coming and number of additional people they are bringing. If I get my 914 far enough along I will be bring it but if not I will probably be in my Jetta TDI. I know from past WRC's that some people choose not to drive their 914 for a variety of reasons, too far, bring wife and kids, don't trust LA traffic, etc... and drive another vehicle. I only asked because I did not recall indicating anywhere that I was bringing a 914 or not and I had not seen a listing of those bring 914's as compared to those just coming to be part of the event.
It is not a big deal, this event is on track to be big, more entrants than I recall from any past WCR's which means more 914's.
Thanks Jim

Can I suggest some more: Best 914 POS. This is for the car that is "under construction" and the owner is really trying hard, but the car still looks like crap. Oh, and, it will be nice, just not yet! I won this, and thought it was awesome! I can tell people I have an award-winning car!
Best/Most Original/Worst/Coolest/etc Mods: not everyone has a beautiful stock, original car. How 'bout showing some love to those who have made some special modifications themselves?
Most Potential: a variation on the Best POS award.
I thought it would be nice to show some love to the folks who bring cars that are still a little rough and need some work. Maybe they are saving money, maybe they are doing the work themselves and are learning and making mistakes. Whatever the case, I'd like to propose we recognize their hard work and potential.

If not, I know of a certain SoCal member that's currently trying to get one back together that may not complete it in time.
Hit me up with a PM and I'll let you know who it might be.

UPDATED INFO
First of all, thanks to everyone for their patience as we get closer to the WCR!
Presently @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=10742 is working on a PayPal invoicing system for registrants . We have everyone's email address save for a few and will be requesting T-Shirt Orders and banquet registrations over email.
With this information, a PayPal invoice will be issued to each registrant for easy payment. Registrants will also receive a detailed event schedule over email.
We are mixing it up and will have our awards banquest as a lunch on Saturday in Old Town Monrovia after our drive. This will allow for more locals to participate that have chosen not to secure a hotel reservation.
We are looking forward to a great weekend and keep an eye out for these emails in the coming days. Thank you

Not really sure, but looks very similar to this World Member's car that stopped by earlier today! It drives even better than it looks!
It must be some high roller who has the $$$ to ship his car to events all over the country. I bet he has a personal mechanic.
Yeah, like a garage butler. Must be nice...
The only thing missing is the blue California plates.

Just make sure you have printed directions for each run, including printed maps.
Someone *will* get lost trying to follow the herd (I'm looking at you, traffic lights) and it *will* happen in an area without cell coverage.

Don't forget simple detailed drive directions. Not page after page from google maps. If not, one falls behind the pack, and you're driving solo as a stranger in a strange land. A 'sweeper' is crucial. If you're in a loaned car the thought of stacking it up puts you behind the pack.

Maybe I missed it, but what exactly is the schedule?
Other than the banquet at 12:30 on Saturday, when are the drives scheduled to start and are there any other "events" (car show?)?
As a semi-local (San Diego), I'm trying to figure out if when I need a hotel room or not.

Other than the banquet at 12:30 on Saturday, when are the drives scheduled to start and are there any other "events" (car show?)?
As a semi-local (San Diego), I'm trying to figure out if when I need a hotel room or not.
Drives are all in the mornings with the following departure times:
Friday 8:10am Saturday 9:14am Sunday 7:10am for Super Car Sunday Sunday 10:00am for Neptune's Net
Car Show Friday afternoon with Peoples Choice Awards 4:00pm-6:00pm Saturday Awards Banquet 12:30pm-3:30pm Saturday Tech Sessions 4:00pm-6:00pm
Official schedules will be emailed after the weekend.

Friday is good for locals that can get away on a Friday and optional for out of towners. Newcomb's Ranch opens at 9:00am specifically for the local Porsche community. It's a great drive and will allow interested parties to experience the local So Cal Porsche culture! Thus the participation in Super Car Sunday as well!
Experience as much or as little of it as you like.

I won't be able to make it to WCR but I'd like a shirt!!
Anyone interested in a trade of a new, never worn 2018 Okteenerfest event short sleeve t-shirt?
XL for XL?
Let me know.

Hey All,
Sorry for lagging - I'm also semi-local and planning/hoping to join some of the festivities, but don't need a hotel. My 914 may be out of action, not sure, but I should be able to make the Sat lunch and Supercar Sunday portion.
Can I please get on the list as a partial/maybe attendee?
Thanks

That's our new route for Saturday. Not going to mess with possible closures on GMR or E Fork Rd.
Going to drive up to the lookout for an Epic photo shoot and drone footage. Awesome road and no one gets lost! One way up & One way down!

@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=18749 Straight as an arrow and pretty flat as well as we climb to over 5,000 ft. as per the top portion of the route on Google Earth.
Here is some background info on this route.
Located in the San Gabriel Mountains of California, in USA, a northerly portion of Highway 39, also known as San Gabriel Canyon Road, has been closed since 1978. The estimated cost to repair the highway is $100 million
The road is closed indefinitely to automobile traffic because of persistent landslides along its route. Route 39 is one of the more varied state highways in the Los Angeles area but portions of the road are partially covered in dirt or badly eroded. It’s passable by foot or bike, as major sections are completely washed out down the west side of Mount Islip into the canyon below. The zone seasonally receives extreme snow levels, avalanches, and rock slides. The road is asphalted, and pretty steep, with a 7% grade average. The local geology and slope instability continue to impede necessary water flow, and cause extreme flooding of the roadway at times. The last 4.4 miles of SR-39 that intersects with SR-2 (the Angeles Crest Highway) at Islip Saddle, and the biggest problem area, reaches an elevation of 6,500 feet at the highway’s highest point; it has been closed since 1978 due to a major rock slide.

I remember those. I had a blue Datsun 2000 in 1969. This is shaping up to be a great reunion so I wanted to make this gentle suggestion. Don't be "that guy" that holds everyone else up because they failed to fill up the night before; needs some air in their tire, etc. There will be enough "naturally occurring 914 problems" to repair in the parking lot. Being somewhat local, I didn't get a room for Thursday. With Friday AM traffic being as it is I'd better leave Temecula by 5:30am so we don't hold anyone up.

There is a Shell Station directly across the street from the hotel as well as the commercial center that houses the Panera so no lame excuses like, "Hey, can we find a Shell Station as my car only runs on V-Power fuel?"

Think there will be any problems with car hauling trailers at the marriott?

The parking lot does not look well suited for trailer parking. However, if you reference the street to the left in this photo, it runs the entire length of the parking lot and looks to be suitable for trailer parking.

@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=20004 For anyone wishing to participate on Sunday only, your options are to meet at the hotel at 7:00am or in the 914 Corral at Super Car Sunday. Location is Pierce College and the entrance is on Mason at Victory and not Winnetka.

I up for a caravan north from OC. I am heading north from RSM Saturday Morning. Had a room booked, but other family obligations have changed that so I can only make the Saturday morning drive and the lunch after. I am flexible where you want to meet. It was good to see you yesterday at the C&C at the Porsche center.
I'm local. I have Not registered for your event. But I would like to joint the group drive on Friday. Do you have room for one more?

It was a great run and the detour to Angeles Forest Highway to Upper Big Tujunga back to Angleles Crest will be the official route.

AFAIK I have an open seat as does my dad. We both have drivability issues so that might change quite quickly.
I'd love to ride in both of the Dalen Outlaws.
Hey anyone have a spare bed & want to cut expenses?
No spare bed but your welcome in both!!! Awesome that your coming!!

I wish I could be there. A 3 month old and a sticking throttle cable (I need to rebuild the pedal cluster) means no WCR.

Work claims me and takes me out of town otherwise, even with the 914 in Indiana and not L.A. I was looking forward to stalking the drives! Have fun!

Funny one of the crew of my flight with Allegient stopped me because of my 914 sweatshirt. Says hey I have a 914 I race in the Lemons. My dad actually owned Easy in CA. Nice! Get a little 914 talk before I even get there.

Think I saw more 914s on the road today than I have seen total in the ~40 yrs I have had my car. Very cool
Ignition switch started acting up just when it was time to leave Newcombs. Car wouldn't start. Maybe she didn't want to leave. Luckily they are easy to bump start.
Stopped along Hwy2 to enjoy the view. Bump start. Stopped in Wrightwood. Bump start. Stopped to visit my parents in Devore. Bump start.
Made it home, pulled in the garage, and of course she starts normally half a dozen times
Knew I had a replacement switch buried somewhere in the parts boxes, so set about doing the swap. Old switch (~15 yrs) was cracked in the usual spot, but not near as bad as some I have seen online. Relatively easy replacement turned into a war with the evil signal-wiper combo switch assembly Original auto-cancelling turn signals did not survive the battle
See you all in the morning

Good Morning, I was already on the west coast when I saw this event posted. I swung by the hotel on Saturday afternoon, and was able to meet a lot of attendees. It was awesome to see so many 914's in one place. Thanks for putting together a great event.
Posted by: Cairo94507 Jun 9 2019, 11:50 AM
I was there with my brother, not with my car-but it is getting close. We arrived Saturday morning and left Sunday at 3:00 am to be able to get back home and get some things done before Monday. I believe the high count I heard was 54 914's. In my lifetime, and I bought a brand new 914 in 1973, I have never seen that many 914's in one place. It was a blast. Met a whole bunch of people I have talked with on the site and never seen. The coolest meet-up was Mark Epstein, Mepstein who came from the east coast to make it. Very cool meeting and talking with him in person. The drive we went on Saturday morning was a great 914 road. I was shotgun in Jim's (Banananose) stunning 6 and then on the way back he let me drive- Yes, I was nervous. I love the T-shirt design too and will of course proudly wear it. Jeff, Andy, Oscar, Eric and anyone who had their fingers in the pie, you put on a well organized, fun event. Next year, I will be there with my Six.
Cheers, Michael

Thanks again to the event coordinators for putting this on. We all know it's a lot of work and we really appreciate it!!

Well... the replacement ignition switch did not do the trick and my car refused to start saturday morning. Ah well. Jumped in the wife's CT200h and zipped over to Monrovia to lurk about for the day
Wish my car had been a part of the gathering at the top of 39, but wasn't a bad thing to have a/c and the little CT is pretty fun on a twisty road ... although it was maybe too easy (dangerous) to sneak up on the pedal pushers
Really enjoyed the banquet and was great to put faces to screen names. Shared a table with chi-town, mepstein, Jeff from SLO, ... sorry, I lost track. Everyone friendly and welcoming
Good times

So today's drive down Las Flores in Malibu was quite a topper for the weekend. I have been up and down this road at least 1,000 times and was concerned how it would go. I even mentioned to Jeffrey that maybe we should skip it given that I have personally been T-boned on this road and yadayadayada......so anyway the road has been recently repaved and is clean and flat and perfect......so we tear down this road.....914's in front of me and behind me.....and it was the most exhilarating drive of the weekend!!! Perfect traction and 4,000 rpm in second gear going 32 mph......OMG!!! What I call a "spicy pace" with Jeffrey leading the way. No wonder he was so adamant about going this route.....OMG!!!! So at the restaurant I ask Margi what she thought of that section of the drive and she replied "loved it"!!!! And all of us guys were mumbling things like "awesome" and "shit damn" and "OMG". I am still freakin' on how much fun it was and how well 914's corner.....none better IMHO. So what a great finale. So did we all get home with no tickets no breakdowns no problems? I think so.... Thank you Jeffrey, Andy, and Oscar for stepping up and making it happen.....the last three days have been a special wonderful experience and my car still runs.....love it!! Thank you, gg

At the end of the day its all of you and your participation that made this such a great event! Truly this was a rewarding experience to jump in with Andy & Oscar to facilitate this for the community!
Only thing left to do now is complete my project and get to enjoy my 914, it’s been too long already. Hope to see you all again on a twisty road sometime soon………
Drive safely my friends!

I believed I saw SirAndy’s car heading north of I-5 around 4:40pm a few miles before I-580. I’m heading back to SoCal after a 4 days in Sacramento.
I knew it’s you @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=179 . and after seeing your car, been watching the north side if I will see more 914s like Elliot’s car. We even stop on those gas stations that north and south road has access just to see if I can see more who stop for a break. Well I didn’t see any 914 who attended WCR.
thanks again for your continued support especially for this site.

Many thanks for Oscar, Jeff and Andy. While I.ve known most of the group for a while, it is always great meeting new people and sharing their enthusiasim for these cars.
On the pre-run drive Sat while scouting for some vistas for pictures I spotted a lone Cayman with New York plates. Guy had just moved out from the East Coast for work.
We drove up to the top....enthusiastically.....and waited for the group to drive up from miles away. It was quite a sight.
I turned to him and said " you won.t see that very often" He just grinned.
Thanks for the great weekend everyone and especially the organizers, and letting me hang out.

Would love to get a poster of the overhead photo. Had a great time at the WCR. Too bad we got separated from the group on Sunday's Santa Monica Mountains drive, but enjoyed the lunch at Neptune's Nest. Drove back to the Central Valley and 100+ heat yesterday. Missing the cooler So Cal coast and mountain weather. Look forward to next year's event. Thanks to all who worked so hard to pull off this great event!

Many thanks to those who put in the work to make this happen. Especially the Ladies for joining us and softening it up around the edges.
What's the best way to upload a bunch of photos? Send them individually to the image thread?
I hope to have a new internet tomorrow. This .2mb upload speed is killing me.

I want to say it was the guy in this creme car
I did a little pull for him that he caught on video and I'd love to get a copy of it

I thought the drive into Wrightwood after lunch was one of the better drives I've done in quite some time.
The view from the overlook there was incredible that day.

Is there another shot with the fringe cars included? I get the idea that filling the frame with 914s looks best.

I actually liked driving in the valley under the freeway quite a bit as well even though it was a very short portion of the drive.

Warner music group.
I suspect he either added a song as an intro/outro or his radio was playing and it picked it up in the video.

I've been meaning to stop those spinal viagra injections.
Thanks for asking, Kent. Been doing a lot of traveling, which wreaks havoc on my skeleton. Getting better now that I'm home...
I can pull the clips off youtube, but whatever quality they were uploaded as is the best it will be. Often times the quality of the footage out of your camera or phone is way better than the youtube compression. So original files are preferred.
I can set up anyone who PM's me with a dropbox for their files. Even simpler than uploading to youtube!
