914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Proper way to Mod/repair a six engine oil cooler

Posted by: Ferg Jun 21 2005, 08:23 AM

OK, during my last oil change, I was not careful enough breaking open the AN lines from the tank/engine oil cooler and while doing so I "moved" the 90 degree fiting on my engine oil cooler. It appears the AN fitting and 90degree fitting is welded and epoxyed on in some way, and i'm betting, i broke the epoxy seal somewhat. So I plan on taking the cooler out and taking it somewhere to be fixed, but what would be the proper long term fix for the oil cooler mod? All weld and no epoxy? or is some epoxy ok and nessesary to ensure no leaking? What type of local place should I start calling? Anyone thats good with aluminum?

Now sounds like a good time to also install that "T" for the oil drain out of the tank...

TIA

Ferg.

I had this done at a welding shop.
TIG welded on. -12AN 90.

Wish I'd plumbed a "tee". idea.gif

I just did that mod to a cooler last night. Looks like Trekkor's, but my welds look like stromberg.gif dry.gif I still need WAY more pratice at alum welding. It is strong, really strong, but I ground it down and will put some epoxy around the edges just to make sure it doesn't leak. Even a hair line crack will leak, so better safe than sorry.

If it isn't bad, you could probably just clean it up really good (really good) and put a little epoxy on it. idea.gif

Mike,

call me at my home number tomorrow .... (thursday) if you want
I'm thinking you should have it welded professionally.

I'd recommend AJ (JMHO)

Brant,
If I don't get a chance to call from work, i'll call you when I get home. Right now the hard part is going to be finding a couple of hours to pull it from the car...
I agree, i'm going to send it off to be welded.

Where can I get the 90degree fittings from (trekkor?)..I need to have my oil cooler modified OR buy a modified one from someone.

On my last three conversions, I just slipped the line over the cooler tube...no fitting, strong industrial type hose clamps. No leak, no tweek and easy to release and drop the oil when changing....

YMMV

The AN 90 degree fitting can be found at any speed shop.
Earl's, Russel, Aeroquip etc.

$20-ish. Will slip on the cooler tube, may need a little honing.

Your welder/fabber will want to media blast off the anodizing before TIG welding it on.

Mike do you support the cooler tube, so it doesn't bend from the wieght of the hose and road vibration?
Show a pic... unsure.gif ..."Sir"...
