914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Engine bay cable "snorkel"

Posted by: draganc Feb 7 2019, 11:09 AM

hi folks!

any advise how to install the rubber engine "snorkel", covering the wire harness exiting the tunnel?

The original rubber grommet is all cracked up and I was think it would be a good idea to replace, while the engine is out.

I have been staring at it for an hour, but can only come up with disassembling all the connectors and even then it looks like a tight fit.

Any "alternative repair" advises are also very much appreciated.

Cheers,

dc

Big connectors go through first. Lube helps.

My procedure was to remove the housings on the big connectors (make sure you can put the right wires back in the right place), fish a piece of bailing wire through the snorkel and wrap and tape it around the wire bundle, use plenty of glycerine to lube the wires and snorkel, then pull. Went fairly easy for me.

Good luck!

What’s a good source for a late style snorkel?

I have and double checked at 914rubber.com,
but it looks like it’s for the early style cars - the
top-end snorkel OD is to small.

Thanks!

Let me just say that coconut oil is the perfect lube. It's edible grade for fun. Also perfect lube for something like this.

Plus it smells like you’re on vacation

I went a different route, the snorkel was cracked, but the ends going to the shelf and bulkhead, were OK. I just could not stomach changing the snorkel, even when the harness was out of the car. I used a waterproof tape that I found on Amazon. Its a stretchy self clinging rubber membrane. Secured with a wire tie at the end to guarantee it wouldn't unravel.

I took a look @ mine before fitting the engine and it was starting to split in some places so I cleaned it many times until spotless, used 3/4" loom tap and its still good,I didn't have the time to wait for a new one and thought replacement may be tricky.

There are many first and also many last, with rebuilding a
old car.

After 2hrs getting all the cables through the new snorkel,
it had to be the last cable messing up my day - wtf?

I guess I’ll be ordering a new snorkel soon.

Question: Where can I get a late style snorkel, with the
larger body top seal?

Thanks in advance!

We haven't made them yet.
Just a lot going on.
Perhaps used?

No worries Mark, you did a great quality job on the early type.

I just figured if I have to do it again, I want it to be LAST time.

I don’t know if a used 40 year old rubber piece will last much
longer. But, if anybody had one in great shape, feel free to
contact me.
