Real 5 bolt fuchs, 15 or 16 inch X 6, unfortunately they're no longer cheap.
Or real 4 bolt fuchs, until you have held a tire and a forged fuchs rim in your hands you won't believe how light they are.

Stock Fuchs in factory finish is my preference. beerchug.gif

Four lug? Hard to beat the factory Fuchs in standard finishes or original Minilites. Then again, tires can really sell a wheel on an NB 914—I seem to recall an orange 914-4 track car slammed on a set of late steelies with gray lips, black centers, and 205/50s (or similar) that looked fantastic.

Five lug? Depends on the car a bit, but I think deep sixes or 7Rs are the ones...

Posted by: Mark Henry Feb 9 2019, 11:54 AM

15" 5 bolt fuchs and 15" cookies, 2nd pic is the 4 bolt EMPI Sprint Stars rims that came on my car. I liked the look, but they were heavy steel, the Sprint Star repops are aluminum.
BTW the 914 with fuchs and the 914 with sprint stars is the same car, quite a colour difference between cameras. huh.gif

I don't think there's a Porsche 15" wheel that doesn't look good on a 914, steel or alloy, the 4 star steelies are my least favorite though.

My personal preference for a narrow body car though, is the 4 lug 914 Fuchs, original finish or fully polished. I'm a little on the old school side so I like shiny wheels.

If you paint the recessed areas black on 4 lug Fuchs, we can't be friends.... just kidding, it's your car make it how you like, not how I like.

Look like empi's - careful on offset; there were as I recall VW and porsche offsets available. VW offset is higher and does not allow as wide tires as the porsche.

Actually not ATS. Cromodora CD 36. As far as I can tell, it's an Italian made magnesium wheel around 11 lbs,.... 14x6 in dimension. Looks like Cromodora makes a lot of wheels for Fiat, Alpha Romeo, and Ferrari.

Well ATS is a wheel manufacturer and thay make the Cookie Cutters Porsche used for so many years.
They also made a wheel that looks like those pictured.
I can see the marking on the wheels on the car pictured to tell who made them.

But it is clear in this picture that it is an ATS wheeel that looks the same or very similar.

Not to beat a dead horse, but the car is currently for sale on the North Port, FL craigslist and the owner clearly states the wheels are Cromodoras. Yes, ATS does make rims, and the ones pictured are very similar.

As previously stated, the valve stem is in a different place...there are other slight differences....I think the spokes are wider on the Cromodoras. The Cromodora is also a 6" wide wheel, instead of the 5.5. I haven't researched the ATS wheels, but magnesium is pretty light weight, so I doubt the ATS wheels are as light. Down side, the cd 36's appear to be only 14" and are probably hard to find. Took the following pic and info off the autobelle website.

"N. 1 circle cromodora to the magnesium, model CD36, Daytona, for cars volskwagen porsche 914, lance fulvia coupe hf zagato and vw maggiolone.Measure 6x14 ets 23, attack 4x130.Usato, edges and rolling ok.European 80 not tratt.Whells rims felgen llantas jantes.Info 3472511545"

Actually ATS..... a very good choice.
Missed a set of four with a car attached a few years ago.

Interesting.... I replaced the stock wheels on my '71 Volvo (P)1800E - which were called "Cloverleafs", they were magnesium centered and riveted Cromodoras. I replaced them with the wheels being discussed which were definately ATS. So the question is - do (did) both wheel companies do the same wheel?

(If I can beat the dead horse even more) Maybe I can clear is up... My 1971 Volvo (P)1800E had these wheels as stock. They we're magnesium centers with large hiden rivet attaching em to the rim. They were marked inside as ATS AND CROMODORA . So ATS is the manufacturer and Cromo are the style, is my understanding.

Well I don't know what the wheel model or style is of the ATS wheel that I posted a picture of but it is clearly not the same wheel as Craig posted. They are both one piece cast wheels with similar design. The picture I posted shows ATS and what I think is 5.5 15 for size. Craig's picture shows cromodora and what looks like 14 6J for size.
I'm sure ATS makes or made many different wheel model/styles over the years just as Fuchs and BBS and any other wheel manufacturer did. ATS made the Cookie Cutters for 911s and 944s, the ATS wheel I and others pictured here and the wheel you just described.
I would guess there have been names that were similar or even the same as well. My Audi S4 had Fuchs on it from the factory and I still have a set of Audi BBS wheels that came with the S4.

^ Was Euromeister an Automotion brand that sort of lived on after Automotion was sold, and maybe sold again?

Fortunately, Braid wheels (and one other?) makes 16-inch Fuchs-look wheels these days. Braid is better known for its rally wheels, so I would guess they're plenty strong.

Hmm. Looks like the Euromeisters are available—sort of—through Rose Passion/Automotion, but not in the U.S. anymore? The good news is Porsche is selling real 16x7 forged Fuchs, at least in the 911 offset. The bad news is they're 3-4x the price Euromeisters were.

Everyone has an opinion. Mine is, don't go aftermarket. Fuchs of course. Mahle's are my favorite.

Rivs are a great sleeper if you black out the middle and polish the lips. Looks awesome on cookies too if you are 5-lug.

Just don't ruin things by putting paint on wheels that should never be painted, or destroying factory finish to make it blingy shiny. It cheapens things. This is the worst sin on 4lug Fuchs. Painting black between the paddles on a four lug is the worst of all! It only screams fake.

Keep things somewhat vintage correct. Putting more modern wheels that are too far away from the decade the car was made, just looks wrong. If it belongs on a modified boxster, especially if bling, it does NOT belong on a 914.

One of the reasons I like Fuchs so much, other than their iconic shape, is they are forged aluminum and rarely get bent or knocked out of true. A lot of the other choices are cast and are very soft. It's very hard to find a set of Mahle's that aren't bent.

Would be interesting to see theses “steelie” look on a 914 five lug. They are by HRBB in aluminum, around 15 pounds each in the 15” diameter. 15” and up in diameter options, custom width and offsets...

Jim at EASY once said he felt Fuchs made the best wheels for a production car he'd ever seen, period—and he was somebody who had seen a lot of Porsches after their demise. His reason was the same as yours: they're forged and of extremely high quality. He said he had rarely seen a failure of any kind. Years have passed since then, and a (small?) number of aging Fuchs on Porsche club racing cars have cracked around the lug nuts as people have continued to race on ever improving tires that can feed wild loads into them. It's helpful to remember these wheels were original equipment for Porsches built between 1966 and 1989, and mainly intended for street cars.

It's be great if Porsche would again offer the "deep 6" and 7R, as I sometimes wonder about the heat cycles and impacts experienced over 50 years of use. The obvious alternative is a cast-aluminum replica from Braid, Group 4, or Maxilite—which I believe all build their wheels with competition in mind. But nothing is quite like a forged Fuchs wheel, and it's very cool that two designs were offered for the 914, in four and five lugs.

Phil, I think any offset you want. They are two piece welded aluminum, customizable...but pretty pricey for an old frugal 914 owner like me wink.gif

The complex webbing of the bbs style either appeals to you or doesn't. I still can't find a way to like them on a 914. (Or anything else I've tried...nrrp.)
Phonedials.... Even tougher to fit into a time or design. hmm... I just can't like them on a 914 either.

Sure like where this is going.

Ride height and wheel/tire package nailed for a hot rod, and Ivory + silver BBS-Mahles + burgundy = a simple look that's very, very pretty. It isn't hard to see this recipe turning into a stunner.

Back in the eighties I'd often go to PCA gatherings with my orange 6 that at the
time had original steel wheels and hub caps.
More than once a person would comment that it was a nice car.....
then, when they got to the back they'd exclaim....'Oh ! it's a six !'
Painted steel wheels about as modest as you can get. Very stealthy.
Widened steelies ?......even better. Remove the hubcaps....a bit racy. Period racy.

Stumbled across some narrow body wheel options - for those with 5 lug hubs - that I didn't know existed until recently; thought I'd share with the world and add into this thread:

http://iozziowheels.com

No affiliation, but I've seen some up close on a VW and they are VERY nice.

- made in USA
- 5x130 bolt pattern, width options from 5.5" and up
- 17" or 18" options
- 2 or 3-piece construction
- many custom options

Fuch-like and another classic design are the main choices. I believe the "coming soon" ones may be a take on the Mahle (see pic), but not officially on the website .... no idea on pricing. Anyway, FYI.

Just a Photoshop mock-up right now, but Group 4 Wheels will be offering a 6 x 15 version of the Campagnolo replicas, with Porsche offset and PCD. Will be running these on my hillclimb car as soon as they arrive (due mid-May).

@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=14795 These are Rinasa wheels. I like 'em too, and I actually contacted the seller last week. He said the backspacing was around 3.5 inches....I believe Fuchs are somewhere around 4 & 5/8's. Someone else might check me on that. That said, I think you'd have to run fairly narrow tires or you'd be rubbing on the outer fender lip. I've never tried to put a set on a 914, so some of this is speculation on my part.

Would a 14 x 5.5 with approx. 3.25" backspacing work on a narrow body 914? Have a line on an old set of 4 x130 Western Minilite repos.

Also, does anybody have an old Western catalog page for these Superlite wheels with specs?

Edited and now including pic:

There is a 914 specific 4x130 alloy wheel that may not be the best looking but are definitely one of the most funtional. Back around '82-83 there was an outfit called "Specialty Racing Wheels" who made a set of 15x7 wheels for 914's with different offsets for fronts and rears, #M7C. They were a two piece modular wheel. They sort of look like a cross between 8 spoke Empis, Minilites and HRE's, but the center portion was more prominent/raised. They were on a few VW & Porsche Magazine 914 project cars back in the early 80's and a European Car mag project car in April '83.

I had a 73 2.0 with these wheels and 215/60/15's fit under stock fenders w/ no problem. I later sold that 2.0 to TC.

Here's a a pic of them from a 2010 VW & Porsche 914 project article.

...and my 73 914 2.0 after TC bought it.

Picture of my 6 number 41 from the ebay ad I bought it from in 2007. It had 3-piece BBS wheels in 8 x15 I flared and went to 7 and 8 x 16 inch Factory Fuchs with 911 part numbers.

Sold the wheels to Jamie in Washington.

A Picture of Haralds car (green one) with 951 factory Fuchs in rear 8 inch x 16 inch with the angle of photo I like best.

And picture of my 6 now with 7 and 8 x16 inch factory Fuchs 911 part numbers.

A picture of my 1974 2.0 factory black waiting to put the 79 911SC Engen in for the 6 conversion. Factory Mahle "gas burners" 15in. These wheels where fantastic with 195x15 P6 Pirelli tires. Picture of first daughter in car around 1984. Note my 70 challenger convertible. Hemi Orange ( picture is Black and white and a bit screwed up from time in the box.

last picture of the 951 factory Fuchs 8 inch x 16 inch that I have for sale in the parts section. I was going to use them on my stock body 74 blue V8 car but changed that to a big 4
