My vote is that black is best with or without vinyl. But it is a pain in the ass for various reasons.
blue/silver/silver/blue is second best--with or without vinyl.
Silver is third, but it needs the vinyl to break up the lines. Thoughts?
1. Silver
1. Black
2. Ravveeeeeena green, B(g)erber yellow
3. l'Orange
At any time, VW mouse grey can take the place of one, or two.
Oh, and uh..uhh.. about the vinyl... nevermind..

Thoughts? |
black is a bad color for a few reasons:
it attracts heat.......
it makes a small vehicle even harder to see in traffic, not a good thing in my opinion

black is a bad color for a few reasons: |
white, dark blue, red and light blue - all on the same car...........
Silver can be just as bad for not being seen...There was a silver spyder (kit) beside me at the local PCA show...no wonder James Dean was killed.
I'll never own a black car again.
Bright colours for a 914 for sure...the brighter the better.
whatever's on sale at Home Depot that day...
I just bought a white 58 bug...white exterior latex
Everyone knows that YELLOW Porsches are faster...
YPAF
Yellow. Preferrably the Yellow Lexus uses on their IS300.
Next question?
Black with all hardware window trim, door handles, wheels, powder coated Black.
Make it loud for safety, so those who can't see you can at least hear you coming.
1. Signal Orange.
2. Phoenix Red.
3. Orange Orangey Orange
grey primer with bondo spots and rust bubbles.
white duh!
Blutorange!!!
All yellow...no vinyl! I mean everything yellow excluding the bright shiny chrome bumpers! Zambeze Green is my second choice w/fawn interior!
Bahia Red. (AKA "Arrest Me! Red)
Signal Orange\Phoenix Red (AKA "Why Orange?")
Any damn color YOU choose for YOUR car. If you choose to paint your car with Acid Green and Burnt Orange stripes, more power to you!!!
my thoughts:
signal orange, Aubergine, Black, Adriatic Blue(or whatever color that REALLY is on Joe Sharp's car) , marathon blue, silver
Black would probably be my fav on ANY car, but it has the issues mentioned before(which is why it drops to #3)... I personally love Aubergine, it's like Black, but through polarized lenses
but, whatever you like for YOUR car is the question...
one final thought: Vinyl sail panels: I don't care for them, and wouldn't keep them on my car(luckily they aren't there)
1967 gulf blue

UHOH! Wayne! You've gone too far, now I *must* comment on sail panel vinyl.
I don't care what color your car isn't. I don't care how big your wheels aren't, or how much gas you don't have..
SAIL VINYL IS MANDATORY!
Exceptions:
1. Early, early car, Phoenix red, matching bumpers, hubcaps on steels.
2. Early car, black, hubcaps on steels.

1. Any of the following Porsche shades: Signal Orange, Tangerine
2. Any of the following Corvette shades: Monaco Orange, Ontario Orange, Orange Flame, Corvette Orange, Daytona Sunset Metallic
3. Any of the following Mopar shades: Go ManGo, Prowler Orange
4. Any other shade I haven't mentioned above, as long as it's orange
/owned 2 orange cars, still own one
I love a 914 in any color blue. I'm also in the group that says "I will never own another Black car" They are beautiful, but not worth the hassle. And I'm with Wayne - Vinyl sucks and if it's going to go on a vehicle, put it on a Pimpmobile not a Porsche.

If you post a thread asking for pictures of Magenta-colored 914s.. .I am gonna....
Just kidding.
Sorry I'm with the group that likes the vinyl and at least the chrome trim lower piece.
Orange are my favorites, then platinum gold and black.
Anyone caught driving a 914 that isn't black, with vinyl, and chrome trim, will be.. uhmm.. looked down upon... harshly!

Ok, I'll stipulate to the fact that cars without vinyl sail panels aren't a complete loss, it's easier to fix than the passenger long..

I found this pic while browsing the other night. It is a 1981 color on an older 911. I think it looks great. I bought a pint of it, but in person I don't think it will look right on a 914.

...Oh, and 914s look plain-jane without the vinyl and chrome trim. And it gives the impression that the owner was too cheap to replace the chrome trim and vinyl the right way, so he just left it off.
I think the vinyl is best on lighter colors--to break up the monotony. On the dark colors they are superfluous. Otherwise, I love the stark/minimalist lines of the 914 without the 70s vinyl.
As long as its a 914, any color other that primer, or blisters, looks great.
However my personal preference is red, and the redder the better.. too bad it is not an "official" Porsche red, but it is red.

I will never, ever, never own another black car. Did I say never? I meant ever. I'd rather be driving the thing than detailing it. They look best at night.
Like probably every one else here I favor my own car's color blutorange (tangerine.)
And I also like the black rockers and valences. It visually lowers the car.
If I had 2 other colors I would choose Anacona Blue. It just glows.
Or the color of Brer's car!
i am torn DEEPLY between my fav. black, BUT lamborghini has a WONDERFUL color called triple orange....it is REALLY beautiful!!
