When I was in high school (OMG THAT WAS 20 YEARS AGO) a girl in my class died from doing this with freon. They would load up a garbage bag and stick their heads in for the same affect as what this guy describes. The entire school attended the funeral.
I'm told nitrous oxide can do the same...
Unfortunately, for once something you read about on the internet is NOT an urban legend. http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_dust_off.htm

I thought nitrous oxide was lighter than air so it could not displace all the oxygen inside your lungs.
Halon could do this as could a great number of inert gasses that are heavier than air.
OK I really have to rant on this one. I am sorry that old dude lost his son, but damn. People are so stupid. I guess this could be referred to as "thinning the gene pool". I understand that you want to be cool and not the odd man out, but get real. Kids are stupid as hell. I had a kid in high school die huffing and was more outraged that he did something like that than the fact that he died. I may be an insensitive ass with little to no compassion for others, how many kids have to die doing something retarded before they take responsibility for their actions. It was no ones fault, they made the decision on their own. (yes I know the author appeared to place no blame) People in general are pretty stupid when they put something into their body that doesn't belong there.
God made weed for a reason. It won't kill you. (unless you suffocate on it trying to swallow too much at one time)
We had a kid in my school die from spraying that cooking stuff Pam into a pellow case then breathing it. They told us it basicly coated his lungs and he sufficated
our baseball coach told the story of a kid that died huffing anti-freeze...

How many of us know people who are noticeably "slower" after years of marijuana use/abuse? I draw my conclusions from what I've seen and try not to rely on "official" reports. There is always a bias.

All good candidates for a Darwin Award.
I hate to sound callous... but this is chlorine for the gene pool.
Had a boss once that would say.."Stupid people shouldn't breed"
(Improved version "Stupid people shouldn't breathe. Gets rid of them faster")
OK, enough with the gene pool BS. The kid was 14. Maybe you were all perfect at 14. I wasn't and I doubt too many others are. It's a damn shame these things happen and I really don't think I can even come close to what the relatives are thinking. For me it would be devastating at the very least. No parent should watch their kids die! I will be talking about this to my kid tonight. Enough said.
I think it's really sad....I feel very sorry for the siblings and parents.

Wow. You're all a bunch of heartless bastards! I can't believe you're going to put this on the 14 year old! There is no fucking way a 14 has enough sense to really know all the ramifications of his or her actions. Holy crap I can't believe what I'm hearing. If it were at all true that a 14 could actually have the wisdom / experience / risk-aversion / common-sense to make judgements like you guys are claiming they should be able to do then why the fuck don't we let them vote or drive or get married or drink or whatever... I'm so fucking shocked at your responses I don't know what to think! And who would have thought this was coming from the same people that mourned poor ^EASTON^ and his family!!! You should all be fucking ashamed of your cold, heartless, asshole selves!!!
Just to add a little scientific note.... I just heard recently (and yes I'm going to spend the next hour trying to find the reference) of a study that showed a particular immaturity in the brain of teenagers that actually affects their ability to judge risk. Holy crap I'm so pissed right now I can't even keep typing.

Alright, Pandora's Box is open!!!!
All of us, AT THE VERY LEAST, one? time in our live's, has done something stupid.
But the STUPID people, do stupid over an cver.
As Forrest Gump Says: STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES.
Like my kid, when he does something stupid, I ask him if he went to his Drug dealer? He says he doesn't use drugs, and I say you have to be getting those Stupid pills your taking from somebody
The thing about kids, it's bad enough they do stupid things, but what makes it worse, they do because of peer pressure, or because it's cool. So what can you do?
And it's a very sad thing, for parents to out live there kids.
I have 2, daughter 25 and a son 22, my daughter's great my son, I think he has and unexhaustable supply of stupid pills.

Jesus....lock this thread....
My ex and I educated my ex step kids about drugs and sex. I even helped them write reports on sex, drugs and rock and roll.
After all of that, I found the youngest girl (14 at the time) on three different occasions smoking weed, drinking alcohol, and having sex in our hot tub. All within a month.
Now she's at Arozona State. Honors student. Captain of her XXXXXXXX team.
She was a lucky one.
Her older sister was not so lucky.

Well Said Brett
I'm 18 and have done alot of stupid things (even done stupid things with dust off) , but I always knew the dangers of what I was doing and I was always was ready to take responsabilities for them. I would have never thought that inhaling dust off could kill you but it doesnt take much age or inteligence to realize that its not smart to do so.
okay, before this gets locked.....
let's just sit and talk here....
I think the situation of him knowing about the drug and its effects might be different between person to person.
for me personally, I never did drugs because i never needed to and i *KNEW* that they were bad.
The kid IS dead though, so let's try and show some compassion for this guy.
One of the kids that I went to school with last year passed away from viral menigitis. The kid was an asshole to me and yet when he died, I still found somewhere in my heart to forgive the kid and mourn the loss......
I can't even IMAGINE what his parents and siblings are going through. I once found a cat dead in my house (the dog apparently went mad and killed the cat) and even *THAT* was hard.
come on guys.....he's dead, regardless of whether he realized that he would die or not. From my experiences, kids usually tell kids all the "good" things about the drug...and not the bad.
"Yo man, this shiznit is raw...high as a kite you will be for time long" but not saying make sure you mix the dust off and O2 around 80/20( asked my dad and thats what he said he *COULD* mix Nitrous AKA laughing gas and O2 at....usually does it much more O2)
but nothing like "you'll die doing it, or you will be risking it"
I am upset about this and I don't even know the kid.
