914World.com _ 914World Garage _ New (old) 914 Owner

Posted by: rbzymek Apr 19 2019, 09:15 PM

So back in '72 I saved enough cash ($2500) to buy a 1970 914. I had a great time with the car and drove with a friend all the way from Michigan to Colorado.. Two years later a driver ran a stop sign and I T-boned his car. The 914 was repaired but it was just not the same. I sold it.

Now that the kids are on their own and I have dialed back the work schedule I decided to purchase a 1975 1.8L, same Zambezi green color. The car currently has a progressive carb and terrible drive-ability. I am pretty far along in the process of collecting the parts for the L-Jet system and hoping to have it done in a 4-5 weeks. I have been searching the forum and found a lot of the information I need. Thanks.

Anyway I just thought that I would introduce myself and say that I look forward to many technical discussions on the site.

Regards,
Ray

Welcome, I hope your endeavor is rewarding and satisfying, hoping the awesome feeling of driving a 914 will come back to you after the fuel injection is complete.

welcome.png Welcome Ray. Right off the bat you made, in my humble opinion, the perfect call by removing the carb setup and returning to the factory FI. Enjoy the process and the drives. beerchug.gif Michael

I grew up in Waterford.
Be aware that some components of the 74 and 75 1.8L FI systems are different and not interchangeable.
Wire harness, AFM, the large S boot, and ECU.
1.8L L jet is a goog system. Just not many parts for them as only about 1100 were made.

Thanks Bruce. I bought a fit of parts but it looks like it was from a bus. The runners should work but I need to sell the rest of the parts. I did find an ECU 473 906 021 which appears to be correct. I have another 1.8 kit on the way that should ave the correct plenum and throttle body.

Welcome back to 914s Ray irish914.jpg , & ....

welcome.png

I have a similar story in some respects. However, mine continues with the same 914, which has been garaged awaiting TLC since 1985.

After graduating form college & securing a decent paying job, I too had saved up down payment & stretched my budget in 1975 to buy my 73 2.0 from the OO - in part to escape effects of the huge gas price hike from the 73-74 "oil crisis" (read: "oil company scam") with my prior `69 Pontiac Ventura 4dr HT with a 400 ci V8. My 73 was my DD for about a decade, had an early 80's rolling resto/rebuild, then got whacked in 85 - & went into the garage with a then fresh running gear but body damaged - while we raised our 2 kids.

Then when they were grown & gone, I started collecting parts & have been slowly doing work to get her back on the road - but my schedule hasn't been kind & have had too many other projects - including our current ongoing 1921 home's resto/refurb. Hopefully I can get back onto the 914 work soon!

Cheers! beerchug.gif

So here are some pictures that were requested. I hope to have the carb to J-Jet conversion done in a day or so. The fuel tank had some rust inside so it has been reconditioned. Also will replace the clutch and accel cables.Attached Image

Ray,

A fully restored 1974 2.0 Liter F.I chrome yellow.

It's still in storage since we are busy building our new forever home in Petoskey that should be completed late this fall. We will then become full time residents and my 914 will be in my new garage with radiant heated floors. wub.gif Hey, its cold up there rolleyes.gif

You can't go wrong by living in the Petoskey area. We have a small cottage in the Pine Point area just north of Charlevoix and we have just purchased a larger cottage in Pine Point. Now we have another renovation which we enjoy doing.

I finally got the L-Jet conversion completed along with a new Triad muffler. New dizzy and solid state points go in this weekend.

Good luck on your construction project.
