Back to the late 70's, the ride along (in a jump-seat) in this 917/30.
Car was in the ownership of Otis Chandler, I won a ride for 20 minutes around Riverside Int'l Raceway...I was hypnotized by that raucous symphony. Over 200+mph down the back straight aktion035.gif This was the Talledega record car...which was formerly in the Cam 2 livery for the record run. BTW Otis also owned the Gulf 917 in the pic.

While my black 9146/ conversion was club raced & street raced as a 2.7L single turbo, then a 3.0L biturbo (1983)...I put a word out with local tuners that I was looking for a used 935 horizontal fan set-up...which came to fruition in 1989. I got a call about a flat fan assembly on an expired IMSA engine for sale. Between a good friend and myself we bought the busted engine and split up the parts on it...me taking the complete fan assembly.
Turns out that it came out of an IMSA car, a March 84g with a factory 962 engine ...with a thrown rod through the case.Attached Image

When I removed the 3L engine to custom adapt the horiz fan , I had the engine freshened up, new displacenent to 3186 cc, twin plug fresh intercooler (through the trunk), brakes upgraded, bigger 10 point cage, gt bodywork & new paint...and she has looked like this since 1995

Now there’s a good reason to give up the rear trunk!

Great story Marty; thanks for the ride down memory lane.

How many of the youngsters here even know what an “E” ticket was?

Otis was an interesting character. He lived life to the fullest!

His car and motorcycle collection was really something to see.

We had some dealings with him back in the day.

He was a good man, and a gentleman racer, I also fitted his new 930 with a set of my stainless steel headers...brought them over to the old Hollywood location of Bob Smith Porsche + Audi.
Proper gent of large esteem , never put his wealth in your face , always greeted me "Hi Martin, how goes it?". Rare today when speaking with that class of peeps...

Hey Joe...that was one fun Poker Run up in the Santa Monica hills driving.gif / driving-girl.gif The orange 9146/ 3.2L just ahead of me in the canyon was owned by my friend Wilfred (Freds Six) . As you were following our cars...you might have seen me nudging on the orange 914 to get a move on biggrin.gif Wilfred and I have cruised many roads so I couldn't understand his underwhelming speed and lackluster cornering that day...and sooo much distance in front of him to the next car ¿¿ Friends indeed so 'nuff said. He sold his car to the current owner Chuck Null who loves it, and is a good caregiver for this well sorted out hot rod. That WCR was for sure a great meet up at Paramount Ranch !!
Hope all is good your way in Fla !

Will do! Remember that EC article like it was yesterday...and remember my eyes popping out of my head. Part of the further perversion process, for sure.
