914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Dash Gauge Pod

Posted by: RolinkHaus May 15 2019, 05:35 PM

Looking to create an Audi style dash gauge pod. Has anyone tried this? Did a Google search with no luck. Not a fan of pillar mounted gauges. Probably going with Battery / Oil Temp / maybe a clock...or Cylinder Head Temp. VDO gauges, of course. piratenanner.gif

I'll bite. Why?

With ready availability of the center console that works and looks great I don't suspect you'll find what you're looking for for the 914 though you could certainly make one.

Simple Path: You can make a custom face for console and fit many more than the stock 3 gauges (clock, oil temp, voltmeter).

There is a gauge plate that covers the stock radio location on the market that holds 3 two inch gauges. I have oil temp, head temp, and oil pressure there.

Clock and volt meter are on the A pillar in the pods.

I don’t run the center console as my feet get stuck on it. I like the extra space without it.

VDO stopped making the CHT.... so if you're going for pretty, they won't match. I like the "deposit box" the 3 gauge thing wastes so much space. So I bought 2 VDO type 2 hole "L" brackets and put them under the dash and at the top of the deposit box. Very functional. A/F OT OP CHT

I like it, but then what do you do for tunes. If you have a six then I understand . . . That is the best music!

VDO probably stopped making their CHT because there’s a far better option out there.

Zach, a simple reconstruction of the back of the center console opens up a world of extra room; I’m a size 11 and no longer have any issues with my foot getting stuck. That said, I like the look of the no console.

But where would I put all the gauges? happy11.gif

A friend wanted to add three gauges that would be in his field of view, not down below the dash. He did the basic aluminum shape and I did the welding and wiring. It has VDO oil pressure, oil temp and voltage gauges and also a USB port. It appears to be mounted a little low, but when in the driver's seat you can see the entire range of each gauge.

And yes, he has a sense of humor.

Not a fan of the center console myself. I will do some experimentation, posting pics. In the mean time, added a side mirror. Some will like it, others will not.

Love the Vitaloni Sebring mirrors, but in order to see behind, placement is key. Still experimenting.

70 watt amp hidden under the dash, with a hardwired minijack run to the center armrest compartment that I can plug my iphone into. Easy! Volume control is all done through the iPhone.

At least that was what I did until I pulled it all out when I realized I wasn't using it. I tend not to listen to music in my 914.

FWIW I ran the 3-gauge VDO radio slot setup for a few years and it did look nice and function fine, but I found it undesirable to divert attention to look at them. I went to the quad-gauge in the standard dash location; a triple gauge would've been fine/better in hindsight. (Voltmeter is pretty useless.)

I want to rid myself of the center console too. Where can I find this gauge plate that covers the radio location?

reminds me of the old amco console, Jeff bowlesby may have a picture of one installed. Has an armrest and a guage pod that sort of looks like the Audi pictured

Not installed, but you get the idea. I would love to find one of these.... I have 4 gauges tho. Don't remember seeing one with the rectangle gadget with the LCD. Wonder what that is. Plus are the rocker switches usually used for seat heaters or power windows?

Cant remember who has it
But id toss all those guages and just get the
Fuel guage that has a huge red oil light.
Size of entire guage i think

Do you really need more then that .

CHT and OT has caused me to check around. A full size paper towel had been sucked into the fan and was covering 1/3 or 1/2 of the fins. OT went up to 260 on a 80* day. I knew something was wrong. CHT needle does not move as far for a 20* increase, but I noticed a change.

another time, my ALT light came on on a 3 hour interstate trip. The voltage gauge assisted in how close I could get to home before shutting it down..... 8.5 volts as I pulled into a Cracker Barrel parking place.... 45 minutes from home.

For some people they are nice to have, some look nice, and I enjoy the feedback. To each his own.... like brands of oil, tires, etc....

I got mine a few years back from RennMetal ( I think). But its just a flat sheet of steel with three 2 1/16th inch holes in it. You could make one yourself in just a few minutes with a 2 inch hole saw and some 18 or 16 ga stock steel from your local hardware store. Super simple design.

It would be OK if it was a nicer rounded pod that compliments the speedo/tach/gauges pod. All the new porsches have a single gauge pod on top of the dash like this.

Posted by: barefoot May 16 2019, 12:08 PM

Dot't particularly like the squared off look of that, should compliment the shape of the 914 pod.
i have a 2 gage pod under the dash edge for CHT & oil P. Replaced the lighter socket with a dual USB that includes digital voltmeter. I'm going to replace the VDO CHT gage with a digital one . My phone sits nicely in the ash tray.

If you don’t use the ash tray, I found this a convenient location using a VDO rubber bracket.Attached Image

Got a three gauge pod, I think it was from Jegs. liked the finned look, kind of goes with the air-cooled engine thing.

I like that dash like that , you can do a hidden Bluetooth radio under dash, - also like the window crank, looks VW? where did you source that from? I am changing mine out I hate the cheap black plastic ones the late cars had.

Posted by: dr914@autoatlanta.com May 17 2019, 08:11 AM

yup that is it, Amco provided a lot of accessories to the dealers so they could install on the new 914 and make some extra money
shift knobs
that console
rear deck lid rack
bumper bars front and rear

among other things, anyone have an old amco catalog showing the 914 items?
