Hi all...did I read somewhere that leaving the shifter in 4th before removing the rear shift rod is advantageous for some reason? Does that maintain your shifter adjustment or something?
Searched unsuccessfully...
Thanks
The shifter is unhooked and the shift bar at the firewall is removed for engine removal. It makes positively no difference what gear its in.

As to adjustment of the shifter. In theory the cone screws maintain the same geometry of the shift rod on re-assembly. Keep in mind that the cone screws are single use items, and need to be replaced once they are removed.
In practice, it is always possible that some fine tuning to the shifter may need to happen after engine re-installation. Usually you are good, but not always. Especially if you have replaced a worn item (like a worn out cone screw or a roached bushing).

Thanks Zach...good points.
I was just trying to avoid carpet and console hassles!!

Mark the rod before removal to make install and adjustment easier.
