914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Steering lock/ignition switch

I think my ignition switch/cylinder, took a dump?

I started taking off, and then it died, and first tried to restart, but didn't turn over at first, but also noticed that when turning the switch it was feeling rough. Tried again, and fuel pump was not running, but did then turn over, but did not start, but for a bit, it kept wanting to turn over when letting off the key, but it appeared like a bit of smoke come up from around that plastic cover, and now I can't get the wheel to release, since the key will not turn.

What part causes it to lock up?

Any thoughts, ideas, or suggestions?

You are probably correct. Symptoms are typical. When the magic smoke gets out you're done.

Replacement smoke is readily available but unfortunately only comes in positive ground form suitable for English made cars.

The contacts in the bottom of the switch could bind and jam.

What year is the car?

Different switches for different years.

You probably have a fried ignition switch. You may have other wires fried too.
Dig into it and see what you have.
