914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Expansion tank on top of fuel tank???

Posted by: Mueller Jun 26 2005, 02:51 PM

pulling my gas tank to install a new fuel pump, filter and lines......started to wonder if anything was inside the expansion tank.....any reason I couldn't substitute a lighter, smaller tank for the same purpose???

I've got one in the trash can as we speak,
Want it to cut it in half?

AFIK...it's an overfill tank for morons that try to get as much gas in as they can...and for thermal expansion on HOT days.

I thought that was for vapor recovery, filled with charcoal. Thing only weighs 2 or 3 lbs.

What happens if you just elimlinate the thing??

If you just bypass the tank and still use the vapor recovery? I dunno prolly nuthin'. If you remove the tank and not use the vapor recovery system - you need to plug the hose coming out of the gas tank or it'll get a little stinky in the cabin.

The expansion tank is on top of the tank...the charcoal canister is over by the driver side fender....usually...

i removed the expansion tank and charcoal canister. i simply routed the hose that connects the gas tank vent to the expansion tank into the large transparent plastic drain hose.

now, when the tank is full and i do hard left-hand cornering, some fuel will come out the vent and drip down the drain hose resulting in fuel "smell" ...
same with a full tank on a really hot day. you sometimes get a hint of fuel smell as the venting gases exit out the bottom of the drain hose.

that's it ...

Am I missing something? What's the purpose of removing the expansion tank?

i removed the complete venting system, no expension tank, no charcoal canister, no plastic lines to the engine comp.

just stuff that i didn't deem neccessary ...

Were does the fuel go from the drain hose?

Andy.. you better watch out. Doing that in California might draw some unwanted attention from the Smog Police.

Remember.... MikeZ is one of them!!

Let's see, there's mostly nitrogen, some oxygen, CO2, unburnt hydrocarbons, various other gases, water vapor, some particulates and probably a little unrecognizable goo in the bottom. Pretty close to air.

The expansion tank drains back into the main tank. It's a safety issue not smog related.

The carbon canister is an old school smog device that also keeps odors down. After 30 years it's probably saturated with hydrocarbons. It's a repalcement item.

It does little or no smog protection but the drones at EPA insist that it be there, even if it doesn't work.

BTW, smog control on cars is to a lesser extent Federal (new) and State (new AND used)....nobody "I" know works for THEM.

The individual States can mirror Federal regs, THEY JUST CAN'T BE LESS STRINGENT, adopt their own or reference California's if they are lazy and don't want to do their own research or maintain an agency.

the drain hose just goes out the underside of the car. it does that ON ALL CARS ...
if you overspill your tank when filling up, the gas in the "catcher" around the filler neck will simply drain through that hose and come out under your car. the drain hose is the big transparent plastic hose. it works that way on all 914s.

the vent hose is a smll dia. hose (on my car greenish) similar to the vaccum hose for the dizzy.
i simply shoved it inside the large drain hose, so any gas vapors or slosh from a full tank will drain down the drain hose and exit at the bottom ...
