What is the purpose of the brake shields behind the rotors. Do they provide cooling or what? Are they needed?
they help in cooling and IMO keep alot of dust off the suspension, and dirt off the rotor.
i bought some at a swap meet to reinstall what the PO deleted. have no idea if they are needed but the factory put them on so i did too
From my understanding they also protect the rotors from road debris, such as rocks between the rotors and calipers.
In my oh so humble opinion, they were to keep dirt out and heat in. The brakes work better on the track with them off.
Just an opinion, which like a s... hole, we all have one, and my opinion may be worth what it cost you.
I do not have them on my car, and have had no problems with junk getting stuck between the rotor and the caliper.

You don't need them! Unless your OFF-ROADING!
I put them on 'cause they were something else I got to paint 'ORANGE'

I got a nice pair of black powder coated ones for 911 struts with 3.5" caliper spacing for sale.
Found out the hard way that the 944 turbo calipers will not go on with the shields in place.
Who needs an extra pair?
