914World.com _ 914World Garage _ What to do with a spare but tired side shifter gearbox

Posted by: Tdskip Jul 20 2019, 11:42 AM

As those that helped me may remember I had a side shifter gearbox in the 1973 1.7 L FI car that shifted well but had what was determined to have a howl from the bearings.

That gearbox has been removed and is now sitting waiting for me to figure out what to do with it. I don’t need to rebuild it because all of the cars at this point have working/healthy gearboxes, so I’m wondering how to maximize what, if any, value it may have.

Should I take it apart and see what condition the gears etc. are in and sell it for individual parts as would help another 914 owner?

Thanks

If you are going to stay in 914’s, put it aside in a corner. They will be more expensive and harder to find in coming years. Especially if yours isn’t far gone.
