914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Plastic fuel vapor charcoal canister

Posted by: Mark Henry Aug 5 2019, 12:48 PM

I have the room in my weber /6 conversion so I want to add a charcoal canister. I couldn't smell gas with a half tank, but I just filled up and I can smell just a whiff of gas, so I want to try a canister. I have the original plastic type out of my '74.

The can has a big smog hose each end and one end has the small line from the tank, which is the in and out sides?

Also what would be the optimal inlet placement with K&N rain hats?

There should be an arrow on the body for fuel flow if it is a Bosch.

The arrow points to the trash can. poke.gif

Why? it's just trapping and burning off some gas vapour?

It is a bosch, my eyes must be getting bad, I can't find an arrow.

huh.gif Why yes I did... I got gas at the reserve a couple hours ago.
It's called the Green Mile, cheap gas, smokes and a weed "dispensary" every 100 feet. smoke.gif

I just like minimal. Interesting that I have eliminated the canister and not had vapor problems. Makes me wonder if an additional part will solve the problem?

Thank you Jeff thumb3d.gif
On your drawing it almost looks like it goes to the TB or plenum, it's before the TB in the air cleaner hose correct?

So for a /6 with weber rainhats, should I point it straight down a barrel?
Or off to the side of one?
Or should I do it like the existing breather hole on the side of the hat skirt and pass gas through the filter? (I know.. insert joke)

I have to drill a hole in the rain hat.

This is just zip tied where I'm thinking of mounting it. I'll just use a simple strap with a wing nut so I can remove it quickly for servicing the battery.
The battery is a Odyssey PC680 mounted on it's side.

Or maybe I could do it from the other side idea.gif

Is it important to mount it on it's side? or does it matter?
I've always seen them mounted horizontal on VW's and 914.

Output of it goes to the air filter housing, before the filter. Don't know how it routes with carbs, but I imagine you would need a "T" to split it 50/50 to each carb.

Orientation of the charcoal canister is not gravity specific. Its just airflow through it.

Thanks Jeff

I think I'm going to look at the other side, then it's not in the way of the battery. It's only a small amount of vapour so I think running it to one carb will be sufficient. I'll drill a hole in the hat opposite of the existing smog hole, the vapour will go through the filter that way.

I'll post a pic when I get it done.
