First of all
ROB- no it's not the roll bar.
Yes it's a part we all need and when we announce I'll tell the full story behind these, as it wasn't as simple as we originally thought.

A few of you are have seen these, you know what I'm talking about.

Any guesses from the masses?

Quotes that may apply at 914 Rubber

Thomas Edison quotes:
“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.”

————————————————-
There’s been try’s before, and lots of talk/noise lately.
My hope is a roof, with a new name? But since “we all need these” not sure.

A time machine so I can go back to 1974 and buy that silver 914-6 with option code 471 I test drove at Triangle Porsche / Audi in Durham, NC

And if I can have a two-fer, go back to 1979 and NOT sell my 1966 911 that I drove for 7 years. (Bought it for $3000, sold it for $4000 and could not believe how lucky I was, LOL nobody drives a car for 7 years and sells it at a 30% premium).

You don't think this has market potential? Duh, we've seen fiberglass and carbon for decades now. But there are people who want bumpers that are lightweight and less expensive than fiberglass. Vacuum mold (or what Mark knows what to do right) is a POP verses a layup. Bang, out the door to a huge market.

Porsche has these (repops) in stock. I bought some from Sierra Madre. Passenger side fit well, drivers side fit terrible. I tried a couple before I gave up and got a refund. The drivers side all have an incorrect curve. It causes the ends (the ones that usually have a screw hole) to sit at an angle instead of a straight line that runs from the mesh engine grill caps.

I’m voting backpad...already foamed and covered. But I’d take the roll bar trim!!!

Actually looked at these.
The preliminary plan was to use Kevlar, it is actually more resilient than carbon fiber, but we do have the capability to do carbon fiber.

Will officially announce this weekend but love the guesses, some of them are stuff we have in the works. I'd bet no one would see this one coming.

I agree with the ignition switch though... There is a real lack for aftermarket that works on that.

No, the tooling is complete now. The only problem we have is the buffiing. each top takes about 8 hrs of cleaning and buffing. Going into the holidays not the direction we can go. Expect movement on these in January. Unfortunately the costs will be going up a little, but then next gen ones are more dialed in.

Been wishing for these ever since looking at some of the trick trailing arms for 911s—something that adds adjustability, space for more tire in the inside, and takes into account most 914s that are candidates are running 0.5-2.0 inches lower than stock.

When I think about the cost of Chris' (very attractive) pickup point relocation kit...and all of the 914 race cars out there...there's a fair bit of latitude for pricing. And unsprung weight is always something nice to get rid of.

Posted by: Mikey914 Nov 8 2019, 12:37 PM

The 951s did a casting for the front control arms. We are doing some work now with a suspension package. The springs we made a a 1st step toward this.
You’ll see more on that soon. Some cool stuff going on there, but that’s not it.

What the h3ll would the OBD2 plug connect to? There are no OBD1 compatible computers on a stock 914, much less OBD2. Unless you are running Motronic on your 914, or something like a Subaru or V-8 engine, there is nothing that runs OBD1 or 2.

Intermittent wipers?

Posted by: Mikey914 Nov 9 2019, 07:27 PM

We completely redesigned the relays to be more dependable and last much longer that those that are currently on the market. Originally these were to be solid state. Two things changed that.

First, in actual testing (yes we really do that) we found the thermal gain unacceptable, and know that we couldn't in good conscious sell that product. Yes they worked, but we were not comfortable putting them on the market as they didn't test well.

Second, we came up with a better design that the engineering suggests will last at least 200,000 cycles.

We are in the process of determining the actual failure point. As you can see from the video

https://youtu.be/PfVR3P-eaFg

This will be running in the shop until failure.

There was another company that shal remain nameless that released relays into the market that had very high failure rates. My brother actually bought some and found 2 of the 5 he bought were bad righ out of the box.

Thant and initially they were cheap, but you saw the price points start creeping up to the point that they are in the $40 range.

We couldn't sit by and watch the 914 (and 911) community get screwed over buy poorly built over priced parts. That's why we made these.

So 1st off we are offering a 1 yr warranty

We may even extend this as we continue to test, but for now it's an industry leading warranty.

We have expended a lot of resources to get these right. I will note that they are slightly larger than the OEM ones. This was necessary as part of the improved design.
We did check the fitment and the clearance on the relay board and the headlight plastic covers is good.

Here's the deal-

Like always we are giving the World community the best possible pricing

]We are offering up a set of 5 for $60 Yes $12 each!

There will be a option to pick up an extra 2 are the same price if you should so choose.
If you want individuals $15 each (Less than 5)

This will be for a limited quantity we are only going to offer 100 "sets" at the GB price as it's below cost.

After these are gone they will be $15 til the end of the month. The regular price will be $28

Our testing so far is in excess of 43,000 cycles. I know we were at 42k when I left Friday morning.

Ask Cary about being stuck on the side of the road when his new fuel pump relay (not ours), left him stranded on the side of the road.

The originals were not bad, but getting near 50 and they are do fail, just a matter of time, however the OEM ones you could get 10 years on easily with daily use.

The ones that were remade by another company had a notoriously high failure rate and when I last checked they were still "re making them" Leaving the original purchasers high and dry without ANY warranty, I'm sure they will chime in now and say oh yes, we are improving the product and we will be "happy" to take care of you.
Now there is another choice. You notice they didn't recall and offer to make it right, only when called out.

That and price points went up once they thought they "owned the market"

We are committed to providing the highest quality product and we stand behind our product with actual testing.

So that's my vent, I'm sure I kicked a hornet's nest, but it's all true.

Yes but we have 59 folks that are interested on the total of 100 sets, so yeah, I may be giving away a few, but the reg "sale" price at $15 will be available til the end of the month.

I'll work on getting the listings together in the next day or so so we can open this up before we sell out all the 100 sets.

Thanks to all.

Nope. I need affordable light bumpers that are less expensive than the current offerings.

And this was the most blatant abuse of marketing in the garage I've ever seen. I love Mark and 914rubber and all they do. But if everyone marketed like this in the garage it would destroy the place. There's another forum for that. A notice here in the garage, linking to a vendor forum thread would be great.

agree.gif

I bought into this group buy, am thankful for this new product, and similarly appreciate Mark & the whole team at 914rubber, but…

…but there has been an increasing trend to use 914world's Garage as a marketing tool for sales when there's a member-vendor forum—and the "psssst, big news but we won't tell you what it is" followed by more or less selling out the first run (of an admittedly cool product!) doesn't "feel" quite right if I step back from it. Another vendor actually started a thread with a title to the effect of "The Ultimate 914 sun visor" or some such, pitching an expensive product as the perfect visors for the best cars, but then wouldn't answer a simple question about the product's vinyl grain (which looks wrong...). Of course, what thread will come up in a Google search down the road, and possibly for someone who doesn't know any better?

While this isn't a problem for the vendors, it is a potential issue for 914world as well as the preservation of these cars...

We just broke 50k +

https://youtu.be/QSR79RJ4nf8

I'm basically giving these away. It's something that I only do here. I do it not to just sell product, but to help the community. As you can see, the GBs that are worthy have legs, if it's just a sale, they tend to go away.

If it's a matter of revenue, I'm quite willing to donate a percentage to the upkeep of the site. I do enjoy making parts and will continue to do so, just like to offer up deals for those that need it.

I fully anticipate this thread will die out as soon as the 100 are sold.

Thanks for the PM, and thanks for such a level-headed and cool response.

I agree with your take, and would take to see GBs that create real value for the community to be discouraged. Just wish some other vendors followed your (overall) lead when it comes to their approach, and wonder how to maintain opportunities for discounted GBs without leaving the door open to the Garage to be turned into a marketplace for full-price ads from less scrupulous suppliers?

Best,

pete

Posted by: CHIZ 914 Nov 12 2019, 11:58 AM

Sounds like a good value and a quality part
can I get a set of 5 for $60.00?

Posted by: Grosbard Nov 12 2019, 02:22 PM

I'll take 5+2, please!

PMs sent to all so far
91 sets spoken for WOW
Would have thought it would take longer but we are almost there!

So, at this point I'll let the 100th know who they are and we can do a back up list, as inevitably there will be a few that fall out.

Put me down for a set of 5, please.

Thanks, RenoRoger

99 committed !
One left !

You can sign up in order if you wish we typically see 3-4 per 100 drop out, so there will be a few sets, but we give everyone a week or so before we release them.

As far as the motor we hope to burn it out and have to replace it!

I ordered my set of relays, thanks !!!!!

What is the amperage rating for these?
And for the red relays?

Thanks

I know where you are going with this. We designed both to the red spec, only difference is color. Figured they can be swapped both ways. Better to over-engineer the product.

For those than want red for the fuel pump they will be available a little after the black as we are doing that run 1st.

Yes that is part of where I was going.
I am also planning some additional wiring and plan to add relays as part of that wiring.
I planned to use the common square 5 pin relays but if these new relays can carry the load I will likely use them.

And since red relays were on the order page I added one to my order yesterday, I guess I won't get it right away.

Thanks

Going to start standby list at this point I'll give folks til the 22nd, them we can go to the stand by. It's not uncommon to have a few drop out, I do suspect it will not be too many.

I'll check back on the 22nd and let everyone know who is on standby. We will have a sale on them but it will not be as good as the GB we have here.

Ok Mikey....(Mark).....I bought the GB shift package out of catastrophic need and my car has never shifted better so I understand the physics of having new shift bushings vs. no shift bushings (knuckle at firewall). Please explain to me why I bought the GB new relays besides your exceptional sales skills? I must have 20 or more original relays in the parts box but I just had to have the new ones you are making. Besides being put into a trance of first come first served, please explain slowly and in short words why these relays are superior to the originals. I am glad I am getting them but I don't really know why I am so happy. Please explain.....thank you very much.
All the best always and thank you,

You know, your post reminds me that this thread got me to thinking I need to build an "on the road" parts stash in the car like I used to have. Some extra relays and fuses, a clutch clevis, a clutch cable (goes nicely under the rear trunk carpet), a fan belt and the tools to change it, and maybe a few more items. Used to carry a lot of that stuff before I pulled the car apart for paint—and then converted it to a -6.

So Mikey's GB thread for these relays served as a good reminder of another kind…

I wonder if that would help my clearance issue running 205/55R16 tires on 5-lug 16-inch Fuchs.

Got a link?

Thanks.

This is EXACTLY why I bought a set - I'm putting together just the sort of kit you're talking about.

We have actually re engineered these ( not just tried to copy a factory part ). They should be at least as robust as the factory part.
That and we are actually testing our parts unlike some vendors.
That’s really the simplest answer.

The support of the community is what allows us to do what we do, so when we did the banner add we decided on the graphic of the car being supported by the members crowd surfing.

Thank you for your reply Mark. After re-reading your initial description my questions were answered. You know us 914 guys love details and specs. Anyway, Is there really a difference between the fuel pump relay and the rest? Do tell? Thank you very much.

Yes huger difference.....The Fuel pump relays are RED biggrin.gif

No, only color as we engineered to the higher spec. Would have actually cost us more to make 2 flavors, and they should hold up much better under the lower load.

Posted by: trojanhorsepower Nov 16 2019, 08:25 PM

Is 5 a complete set? I see lots ordering 5, but don't actually know how many are needed.....

Posted by: second wind Nov 16 2019, 09:19 PM

Funny how my passenger side headlight did not go up this morning?? After driving a while the road vibration must have loosened it up and it started working again. Having new relays vs. 50 year old relays does make sense, eh? Glad I made the cut off.....

The OE 911 fuel pump relays were red and made to carry more current than the standard black relays.
I don't remember what year 911s got the red fuel pump relays, it may have been when they introduced the CIS fuel injection.
The stock 914 fuel pump relay was a standard black relay.

I don't recall the amperage rating for either the standard black relay or the higher rated red relay.

I also have some white relays that were in my 72 when I got it.
I don't recall seeing white relays before.

I was looking to get some red relays to carry extra load for some accessory circuits I plan to add.
Now that Mark says his new black relays are engineered to meet the higher load of the red relays I don't need the red ones. I'll probably get the red ones anyway and use the different to indicate the higher load circuits.

The GB is over as we were basically giving these away. But we do have them on the site on sale til the 20th
Black

Red

By the way we just broke 230,000 cycles on the test bed. That's one of the reasons we can offer you a warranty. We actually test our products.

Old pic buy still going

By the way our goal was 200,000 cycles for these.

Just curious but are you doing endurance testing on more than one relay?

Posted by: Mikey914 Apr 15 2020, 02:34 PM

We only have one test bed, We do QC each relay before it ships but we were thinking we could get it to fail at some point.

Posted by: jd74914 Apr 16 2020, 09:18 AM

It would be interesting to run a second or third up in cycles, just in case the one you picked to endurance test happens to be a best-of-the-best. (Not intending to criticize, I've had the "pleasure" of doing endurance testing and was always surprised to see the massive variance in some electronics.)

Posted by: Mikey914 Apr 16 2020, 10:47 PM

We do plan to test more, but want to see how far it will go. We did build these to be durable, and this one was chosen at random not made specifically for testing. Anyone want to place bets on how long it will last?
There’s a thread worth posting.

Just replaced all of mine with these yesterday!. All very nice. ?kept the old ones of course but these are not likely to fail anytime soon!
