914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Update on New relay testing - Hows your "testing" going

Posted by: Mikey914 Dec 10 2019, 12:56 AM

So wanted to separate this from the GB we did so you can see when we update. We are optimistic that we will reach the design cycle target of 200,000 cycles, but will continue to test it to failure.

Everyone that signed up should have theirs by now and there were a few that backed out that I'm PMing those in line tonight.

I'm proud to say that we are broke 128,697 before I left this afternoon.

Wouldn't a more real-world test be:

1) put it in the freezer overnight, take it out and start testing, then put in in the freezer overnight again, continue testing ...

2) put it in a 100-degree oven for a few hours, then start testing, let it cool down, put it in the oven again, continue testing ...

???

He’s in Oregon and the testing occurs in a warehouse without heat. I’d estimate that 100,000 is well beyond the real-world cycles.

If my math is correct, for a typical daily driver, the fuel pump relay should cycle 4 times a day (if you go to lunch), once in the morning, once going to lunch, once returning from lunch and once going home. If you work on a 7-day week (most don't), there are 365 days in a year. Based upon the latest cycle number of 128,697 so far, that means the relay will last:

128,697 cycles / (4 cycles per day x 365 days/year) = 88 years

That is longer than most of us will live.

My conclusion.... great product. Thanks Mark.

We put some thought into the testing. We run it in about 8hr runs firing every 7 seconds. We are using a live load. The switch triggers the relay to turn off and on a headlight motor. The equivalent of turning your headlights off and on every 7 seconds.

Rob is also correct. The area we are set up testing is currently getting down in the 40 degree range.

So how many relays have you tested? I would rather see what the results of 100 relays tested with 5000 cycles each. Yes I already bought some.

Now that I have these nice new 5 relays should I replace all the old original relays with new? I do usually ascribe to the philosophy "if it ain't broke don't fix it" and the originals in my 73 teener are working fine now, no problems noted. confused24.gif

Now you're just showin' off, @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=3348 .....(and good for you - and US!)

We actually test each relay before we ship them to assure our customers they have a good tested part. So knock off a couple dozen cycles off our count. Sorry we used them beer3.gif

Well an update. Our design life cycle was 200,000 cycles. As you can see still going on this.

Thanks again to all that made it possible for us to make these.

Based on your testing we can offer a 2 year warranty. We designed these to be a significant improvement over OEM, and they turned out better than we planned! beer3.gif

Yes still gong !
Looks like these might out last the cars.

Maybe not good business sense to make a part that you will never have to replace, but these will probably outlast all of us!

Any vibration testing?

Posted by: Mikey914 Feb 20 2020, 11:39 AM

Yes

Posted by: StarBear Feb 23 2020, 09:35 AM

PS: I presume no difference between the "red" and the "black" other than color (and the $2)?

Posted by: Mikey914 Feb 24 2020, 10:24 AM

We did actually make all to the "red " spec.
The $2 is what it cost to run another color and perhaps sit on these for awhile as they are not black. Ya can't just do 100 of them, we did 500 this run.

Yep still going

The original relays in the early 914s and 911s were in a metal can. Would it be possible to get some made with the guts of your relay, but in a metal can?

Posted by: Bleyseng Apr 16 2020, 10:24 AM

I can't remember where the red relay went?

It isn't used on a 914. Mid 70s and up 911s got them. They are functionally the same as the black one, but they are designed to handle more wattage.

Ok, I had a couple from pulling parts in the 90's at the Porsche junkyard but couldn't ever remember seeing them on a 914.

Posted by: Mikey914 Apr 16 2020, 01:23 PM

Yep 911 thing
