I think we talked about that before though.. don't remember why it got shit-canned

it didn't. it simply never achieved critical mass.

here's the choices: somebody gets to pony up a big chunk of change to get 12-14 high-quality color separations made and then pay a litho house something like $15 each to make a 1000-unit press run. and risk having a shitload of unsold $20 calendars. i don't see a lot of people able *and* willing to take on a $15k initial investment for that approach.

Approach Two: you find someone with a large-format high-quality printer, like a XeroX/TektroniX wax-deposition printer who's willing to do it on a "print-on-demand" basis. that equipment is expensive, as is the high-quality paper, and the "ink" will run you about $2/page. you might be able to find a repro shop like a Kinko's with a sufficiently large printer if you're in a big city, but i bet they'd still cost you $20 a piece to make. add $10 for shipping and you might break even.

great concept, and i'd be glad to contribute some art to the project, but i'm in no position to sponsor it, much less bankroll the whole thing.

if someone can present a financial and production model that doesn't involve someone losing a shitpile of money, speak up here. July is *not* too early to get the ball rolling...

If you use CafePress.com services you just need 12 pictures @ 200 dpi and I don't know what the dimensions are but I'm sure they specify that too.

if they're bigger than postage stamps, watch out for pixelation...

OK, now you made me go look it up dry.gif

Their Calendar template specifies 13 pictures (one for a cover I guess)

11.4"W x 9"H (trimmed to 11"x8.5") @ 200 DPI or PPI

2300 pixels W x 1800 pixels H

Certainly wouldn't hurt to have higher resolution pictures but they do have to be uploaded, so file size could be a factor.

"CafePress.com recommends shop owners create their images at 200 DPI to maximize CafePress.com product quality and image upload efficiency. We have run extensive end to end tests on all our products and have found that there is no discernable print quality difference gained by exceeding the 200 DPI recommendation."

http://www.cafepress.com/cp/info/sell/images/help_images

OK, on your marks, get set, go!

We have talked about a calendar every year. chatsmiley.gif
Now is the time. smilie_pokal.gif Let's do it.

We need to decide if we want just cars or cars + models.
We can have people submit photos and then vote on the best.

Posted by: bd1308 Jul 6 2005, 06:05 AM

yeah. we should do that. anybody have pics? Meredith, i know you will be able to borrow a car.

QUOTE (bondo @ Jul 5 2005, 08:28 PM)
If it's per inch why does the size of the picture matter?

because those "extensive end to end tests" that CafePress talks about typically depend on the "optimal viewing distance" being approximately equal to the diagonal size of the image. we tend to look at small images from farther away than that, and larger images rather closer. the closer you look at a lo-res image, the more pixelation and jaggies you will see.

but it's been a few years since i was a professional photographer, and months since i was a newsletter editor, so WTFDIK?

in the final analysis, someone will check out the samples and decide if the quality and value are acceptable. if so, we go, if not, we look for alternatives.

Best of luck guys.

The biggest issue I had when trying to do a calanger was the image sizes. I could only get a handfull of photo's that woul actually look good when printed close to 8x10.

I even tried to add a 1" border to make smaller photos work...Looked cheesy headbang.gif

I also tried to have 2-4 smaller photos for one month to keep the required photo size down...Took alot of work and I am better with a wrench then Graphics sad.gif

There area lot of GREAT phot's out here but they are just too dam small.

BUT..............

If everyone that can takes some high res photo's over the next few months (until Oct) maybe it will be possible. I think I have 2 high res photos from the last (my) calender try.

Since this would be a 914 club calender, I think it is important to accurately represent the true cross section of 914s owned by club members. In other words, roughly half of the photos should illustrate 914s holding down jackstands, or with rotten hell holes and longs, etc. biggrin.gif In fact, I nominate my car, as in its current state it would perfectly illustrate one of the cold and dark winter months as it awaits rebirth in the spring. wink.gif Heavy.

Here are some suggestions if we don't limit the calendar to "pin-up" type.

Set a time period ~ 4-6 weeks of submissions, then the garage can all take a week to vote for 12 images. We could even "create" extra months since we need more time to work on our cars. laugh.gif

Yeah Gwen, like I have TWO non-running 914's I need to finish and design and a meet to organize. I keep telling myself to stay away from the garage to devote more time to them but that never happens... laugh.gif

So when you want us to send you pictures Britt?

Seriously, if the club wants to have a calendar I suggest we try a service like cafepress.com which does not require anyone financially bankrolling the project.

Someone just needs to start a store there (if you want I'll volunteer) and anyone, anytime can order a calendar through them.

It can be priced at their base price which I think is $14.95 and they handle everything but the design work.

If you want me to take the lead send me your pictures:

2300 pixels W x 1800 pixels H @ 200 DPI or PPI
11.4"W x 9"H (trimmed to 11"x8.5")

We'll see how much my email account will handle idea.gif
If you have many to submit, send them to me on a CD.

Let's say all photo submissions are due by the 1st of August. Then we can take a club vote on the favorite 12.

What say ye confused24.gif

Just as a thought, the calendar doesn't have to be limited to one car per month. You could do a collage for each month of two or three cars. Maybe put pictures from an event in the past on the current month. For instance, for Sept 2006, you could put pics from the Sept 2005 Red Rocks Classic. Just an idea...

But ya'll do need to start sending 'em (in the proper size & resolution).

Thanks for the help Roger!

Set your digital camera to take "Fine" quality JPEG pictures.

Burn the pictures on a CD and mail them to me, or

For those really digitally challenged you can mail me a film-based landscape orientation (sideways) photo and I'll scan it.

Adorn or stage the 914(s) in your picture anyway you want, but remember do not send any copyrighted material. The printing company won't allow it.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, if we get enough pictures for multiple theme calendars (car only & car with people) we can consider producing more than one calendar.

So far I have received 7 pictures from 2 people. We've got a ways to go still...

Ya'll have been posting some great 914 pictures here, but I can't use them for the calendar because they aren't print quality.

If you want them to be considered for the calender send them to me at: gagolub@yahoo.com

Make sure they are:
2300 pixels W x 1800 pixels H @ 200 DPI or PPI
11.4"W x 9"H (trimmed to 11"x8.5")

I can do that... in fact I already have one!

I took the pic last week for hagerty, they wanted to see the car, in it's present state in the garage(so they can see the garage too)...

914 on jackstands, engine sitting behind the car, usps boxes, tools, water jug on the back trunk with a giant beach towel as the "service cover"; garage a muckin' fess!

OK, now you made me go look it up  <_<

OK, on your marks, get set, go!

For $19.99 each I think you can set up the calendar file and each person can order and pay Ophoto individually.

I think that this way no one will need to do anything except set up the file and post the link!

Garold,

Great pics.

The one which was 1 MB was perfect for me to resize. I can tell it was taken with a long lens (zoomed) so not crisp but I think very acceptable. Good work. aktion035.gif

When I wonder if ja picture is a high enough quality pic to print blown up, I view it on my PC at approximately the size I am going to print it and then make the call if it's worth printing.

Keeping in mind that, when printed, it will show all of those nagging imperfections.

For example and line that goes at a 45 degree angle but looks close-up as little stairs steps. That's not good. =-)

Cheers.

Copyright FREE? All are from ebay and here. Don't know if someone would see their pic or car and get all legal and stuff. Just took a closer look, the Motor trend future 914 is in their and a couple 914 original ad scans.

The mosaic program just pulls pics from a selected folder, matches color and contract and contructs. Its pretty damn fun!

I'd suggest we only submit our own images or with the owners written approval. I highly doubt Mark Stehrenberger would approve use of his drawing without his permission. eBay also has strict image "copyright" rules.

I'm the originator of the mosaic, and I wouldn't mind its use. Now the originator of the original pic could object, or anyone who has a pic they can identify in the mosaic.

As for the pics from ebay, if they sold their cars there, odds are they would never lay eyes on the 914 calendar. Then again, how could one argue a very small portion of the mosaic was theirs?

Again, only true issue is the Motor Trend pic and Porsche ads.

CafePress is very quick on production time. The rest is up to me to post the artwork.

I will be out of town the last 2 weeks of October. And then the winter holidays come rushing upon us.

So let's say October 7th is the photo submission deadline.

Where they're at:
once you get to the Corkscrew, and you were looking at
the track, turn around, the Bricks are in front of the
little Vending station that sells cold beverages.

Here's a funny story......
my dad and I drove into the track on Wed, the roads
that go ALL the way up to the top were locked up,
so we drove up as high as we could,
then, for some DAMN reason, I decided that I would
try
to RUN all the way UP the hill!!! ohmy.gif ohmy.gif ohmy.gif ohmy.gif ohmy.gif

My dad was quite surprised that I made it as far as
I did, 'bout 3\4 the way up,
but then I ran out of Oxygen! lol

I actually felt light-headed, and walked/stumbled twice,
sad.gif
I had to Bend over a grab my shorts numerous times,
desperately trying to catch my breath! screwy.gif lol2.gif

It took me about 35 minutes to STOP breathing REALLY,
REALLY hard!

So I'm thinking that someone from the SF bay area can order 15+ calenders and distribute them to others (like college students) to save money. Now I know your thinking why don't I do this myself but I have to pay for school so I'm on a budget. So if somone is willing to order a bunch, I'll send a check to you for $10. Let me know. I'll definitly be able to pick it up by mid december after finals, or some weekend when I go home.

Now, are we guys in the club gonna take up some kind of collection to get "Miss April" to the WCC06 somehow...or what. We have a lot of beautiful women in the club but that picture is soooooo.....Cool Hand Luke....I love it. And who are the lucky ones who own Sept. and Nov. nice...nice....nice. pray.gif

Hi guys. I've been out of the country on vacation for the last 2 weeks. Came back to find my calendar had arrived too. The final results are pleasing smile.gif

As far as availability goes, as long as I keep it 'available' on my CafePress.com store page, anyone can buy it. Buy whenever and as many as you want. I think they even offer discounts for purchases of 15 or more at one time.

So I promise not to touch it until...when? April? lol2.gif
