914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Happy Birthday James Garner!

Posted by: 914xr75 Apr 7 2020, 08:03 PM

Jimbo would have been 92 today. Just finished the episode where he featured Lawyer Beth Davenport's 914. Because he owned the production company that produced the show, he handpicked every car that appeared. Happy birthday Mr. Garner.Attached Image

The 914 is truly a very unique car. It was first with fuel injection & unibody in the US market.

I think it's cool to remember when everyone could drive a manual transmission. In high school even most of the girls drove standard transmission cars like Beetles, Datsuns, Toyotas, etc.

James Scott Bumgarner was from my original hometown of Norman, Oklahoma, long before my time. He was close to my mother's age but she never knew him. His family left Norman but later returned for his Jr. and Sr. years of H.S. He dropped out before graduating though, joined the service after WWII, and eventually ended up back in Hollywood, dropped the "Bum" off the front of his last name and the rest is history as they say. Great actor. birthday3.gif

Another great actor who was also a serious racer... something fun to watch is "the Racing Scene" which follows him and his team from Baja to Sebring to Mont Tremblant. And of course, "Grand Prix". Only "LeMans" is as good.

I listened to the Rockford Files theme song the other day, just because it's so awesome.

He was great in the Great Escape, too.

h b J G.

my dad's favourite tv show.
we are talking sitting in country australia in the mid 1970s.
my mother would allow me to sit up late and watch it, only because my father was there.
the yank tanks were exotic compared to aussie cars.
the mysterious 914 was mesmerising. i knew what they were even as a teenager - the only appearance they could make in australia was via jim rockford.
J G / J R had taste in spades when it came to cars, and living arrangements.
i wanted to live in a caravan in car park next to a restaurant when i grew up.

think i suffered imprinting on my brain circuits that manifested 15 years after that.

And a "man's man"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Garner

Shortly after his father's marriage to Wilma broke up, his father moved to Los Angeles, leaving Garner and his brothers in Norman. After working at several jobs he disliked, Garner worked as a merchant mariner in the United States Merchant Marine at age 16 near the end of World War II. He liked the work and his shipmates, but he suffered from chronic seasickness.[10]

Garner enlisted in the California Army National Guard, serving his first 7 months in California. Then, during the Korean War, he went to Korea for 14 months as a rifleman in the 5th Regimental Combat Team, then part of the 24th Infantry Division. He was wounded twice: first in the face and hand by shrapnel from a mortar round, and second in the buttocks from friendly fire from U.S. fighter jets as he dived into a foxhole. Garner received the Purple Heart in Korea for the first wound. He qualified for a second Purple Heart (eligibility requirement: "As the result of friendly fire while actively engaging the enemy"), but he did not actually receive it until 1983, 32 years after the event.[14][17][18][19]

got a thai restaurant on the other side of the carpark.
pulled up short on beach front location and settled for ghetto.
