This 1974 1.8, 400,000 mile car was Betty's pride and joy. It was a survivor. sad.gif

@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=1143 was driving yesterday. @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=3255 was at home. No injuries. Struck from behind by an inattentive driver while stopped at a light.

Glad Clay is okay. Heartbroken for Betty.

This was a huge hit, glad Clay wasn't injured! Engine compartment now full of cat litter! bootyshake.gif Perp's insurance settlement should at least buy Betty a new Boxster!

Sorry this happened to you guys.

At least no one was hurt. Our little cars really absorb impact helping the passengers from a front or rear impact.

glad there were no serious injuries.

i wonder if the other driver felt worse for wrecking a classic?

Posted by: Literati914 Apr 27 2020, 11:12 AM

GAWD!! That SUCKS!! Man, I feel terrible for you guys. Glad Clay's ok.

Clay/Betty, if you consider rebuilding it.. I have a pretty clean parts car and am local.

As long as everyone is OK, then it is just metal (albeit precious metal).
Metal can be repaired or replaced. Clay can't.

Clay so sorry, glad you escaped w/o serious injury. Dont discount the possibility of an underlying (health) issue that crops up in the next week or so due to that impact (wow)
Please convey all our angst about the loss to your wife for the loss of her very special car.
As has been said there are (were) very few with such a engaging story.
In the end ..its a car & your life & health are more important.

Clay's being OK is what matters!

Posted by: Cairo94507 Apr 27 2020, 11:37 AM

Very sorry to see that picture but glad that Clay was not injured and Betty was not in the car. I hope it was insured with a stated value. Hopefully, somehow this can have a happy ending and you end up with an excellent 914 or whatever you want to replace it.

It's incidents like this that cause me the most concern when it comes to our cars. These butt-wipes driving around with their heads up their butts as they look at their phones. Here where I live it is not uncommon for these spoiled, self-entitled children to get Mustang GT's, Corvettes, M3's, WRX STI's and the likes for their 16th birthday. We have all seen how they "drive". I have a 3rd LED brake light in the middle of my engine lid and I am still not convinced that is enough. Rear enders and fires scare me the most.

Posted by: bretth Apr 27 2020, 11:38 AM

Thankfully you're okay. Ugly impact.

I'm constantly checking my mirrors at stops.

Glad to hear Clay is OK, Im sure Betty and He are Heart broken....
That said, I driven 914s since 1977, But just last week I saw a lone 914 in the
distance on the freeway, a little spec , caught up to it and Amazed how low and
small these are......stay safe

Posted by: 914Sixer Apr 27 2020, 11:50 AM

Glad Clay is healthy. The size of the impact lets us know that Porsche was way ahead in the safety department. The crumple zones are a big factor on these cars.

Sucks doesn't even come close... Happy to hear Clay is okay. Sheetmetal can be repaired while our members are slightly more precious.
Clay, don't forget to see a GOOD chiropractor and a GOOD massage therapist. My wife sees many who have had a bad hit (myself included) and has been able to work wonders with sore and torn muscles. Take care of yourself for the long run....great to hear you're okay.

Posted by: BENBRO02 Apr 27 2020, 12:05 PM

I'm glad you're ok Clay. Does this mean Betty now has a 914-6 daily driver?

Glad Clay is OK! Just like him to bring oil dry to his own accident

Posted by: dr914@autoatlanta.com Apr 27 2020, 12:35 PM

OH NO!!!!!!!!!!!! Not after all of these years! That was a hard hit, Clay. For you not to be hurt says a lot for your youth and flexibility as well as the strength of the 914

The car can certainly be fixed but would take a lot, the probably end of a long love affair. I am happy that at one time or two I saw that car in the flesh.

I also hate to see a 914 that survived all of these years finally get it. One would think that the car deserved a free pass from accident

This is the same way my 1st 914 died. mad.gif

Just like my 914, the rear end folds up -- really was an advanced crush zone before such a thing ever was "designed" intentionally. Amazing little cars.

So sad to see a survivor go like this! I get so angy at these sorts of "accidents" that really aren't an accident. They are driver negligence, plain and simple.

Hopefully your state has better insurance laws than we have here in MI with No Fault laws. barf.gif Sorry I slammed into you when I wasn't paying attention. Oopsie. My bad. No Fault -- sorry for you loss. barf.gif

Texas is NOT a no fault state. I think the min damage limit is 25k.

He may have to sue for the difference. Total it and find a Celette bench.

In At Fault cases it eaves it open to the driver that hit Clay to say he didn.t see his brake lights since the car is so low....no third brake light.....crap like that.

I like No Fault insurance for just that very reason. Fault doesn.t matter your own insurance pays the claim.

Posted by: anderssj Apr 27 2020, 02:33 PM

Glad everybody is uninjured, and yes it's just a car, but still...after more than 400K, it's a damn shame. Sorry.

Posted by: davep Apr 27 2020, 02:48 PM

Very sorry to hear of this. I agree that Clay should be checked out, and a massage would really be helpful. Betty must be devastated; my sympathies. It will be interesting to see the totality of the damage.

Posted by: JRust Apr 27 2020, 03:00 PM

Major bummer Clay but glad you are okay. A second for getting yourself checked out. Many times you don't notice things until later that week. So go see a Chiropractor at the least. Keeping my fingers crossed insurance treats you right. Love to see it get fixed but no small deal there

Posted by: MartyYeoman Apr 27 2020, 03:10 PM

OUCH!!

I've seen it before, jump out of the car "I'm OK, I'm OK" then 48 hours later "Fuck, I can't move."

Hope yours is a fast recovery.

Posted by: MM1 Apr 27 2020, 03:12 PM

What a blessing to survive such fools . . .the good news is you just were granted a new lease on Life . . .here's to 20 more great years (and another renewal)!

Posted by: horizontally-opposed Apr 27 2020, 03:17 PM

So glad Clay is okay—and hope he is really okay. A cranioscopic chiropractor is well worth the hourly fee in a case like this, just to get an "eastern medicine" second opinion and to relax muscles that tightened up in dealing with a hit like that.

Looks like this 914 did its most important job well, but it's heartbreaking to see that it had to after all these years (!!!) and miles (!!!) of careful driving and maintenance because a driver just couldn't be bothered with paying attention in the moment. I'm so sorry, Clay and Betty. This was a beautiful example, and I hope it can somehow be saved or live on in one form or another.

Posted by: ClayPerrine Apr 27 2020, 03:46 PM

Betty and I just got home from taking her car to the body shop. Richard Fisher has the car now. He says it can be fixed, because there is no replacing that car. That is Betty's baby. The body color says it all.... Phoenix Red. He will be at the next Okteenerfest. <determined>

What happened:

I was driving to Lowes to pick up some fungicide for the bushes at the front of the house. I was stopped at a light, first in line in the left lane. There was a pickup in the middle lane next to me. Just idling with my feet on the clutch and brake.

I never saw it coming. The witness who gave me his contact info told me the Honda crested the hill behind him, and he was in the triple digits. He saw the big Chevy pickup in the middle lane, and changed to the left lane to go by him. He hit me at speed, there were no black marks leading up to the point of impact.

Everyone here knows I am short, so I drive with the seat all the way forward. The impact was hard enough that the seat tracks are bent. The seat is still all the way forward, but the back of the headrest was smashed. My legs hit the bottom of the steering wheel bruising my upper thighs. The seatbelt caught me on the rebound, and left bruises on my left shoulder and stomach. I was thrown back hard enough that my head hit the headrest and left a huge lump on my head. The impact was so hard that the radio and the ash tray popped out of the dash. I was pushed forward about 30 feet with the rear wheels locked hard. I left black marks from the point of impact to halfway across the intersection.

The impact also crumpled the rear of the car so much that the engine support bar is now U shaped, and both ears are broken off the transmission. I had to use a sawsall to cut the shift rod to get it out of gear, and it still won't roll. The door gap on the left side at the top went from about 4mm to over 10mm. The EMT on the scene checked me out.

The other driver was a guy in his late 40s. The airbag discharged and knocked him cold. About 4 locals that saw the wreck surrounded his car so he couldn't leave. I called 911, and got the LEO and ambulances coming.

This morning I went to Carenow. The doc there is the one that stitched me up when I cut my finger in the garage. He did the whole check for concussion, and said I was going to hurt for days. Lucky I have a hard head.

I called last night and reported the accident to my insurance. Today I called my agent so he could clairfy how this is going to work. He is not in today, but I will hear from him tomorrow. He is a PCA member with a 2016 911 Turbo.

We then took the car to Van Alstine where Richard's shop is located. It is an hour's drive and 60 miles to there from home. Richard helped us unload the car. It didn't come off easy, they used a forklift to lift the rear and pull it off the trailer, while the front came down the ramps.

Once the insurance estimates are done, the repair work will start.

Richard has already found the rear from a 74 to use as a donor. The front was used to fix another 74 that hit a fire hydrant.

Betty has been inconsolable since she picked me up at the scene.

The bottom line is, that car saved my life yesterday after some asshole tried to kill it and me. That is the same car that I rode in on our first date. It is the first 914 I ever rode in and the first one I ever drove. We drove home from our wedding in that car. Hundreds and hundreds of road trips, weekend drives, the list is too long to complete.

That asshole tried to kill one of my children.

Thanks for everyone's sympathy. We do appreciate it.

Oh and the joke about bringing my own oil dry is funny, so don't feel bad about it Rusty.

And a shoutout to @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=3031 . The LED tail lights still work. I pulled the hazard switch and they all started to flash. The right one is pinched inside the crumpled tail light, but it was still flashing. pray.gif

I found myself thinking about whether or not you could fix that car. I'm glad that you are going to save it. There really aren't many 400K mile cars like that car was and with that sort of special history to both you and Betty.

If there is anything I can do along the way to help the cause I'm in.

Also very glad your fixing the car!

I'm so glad you're okay, Clay. I am so sorry about Betty (and your) baby.

And I'm certain of one thing: Triple digit speeds + no black marks up to the impact = no accident.

Wow that is a massive hit. Glad to hear you're in one piece but wait a day or so before saying you're ok. Too many cars today can easily do 100+ which is about 80MPH faster than some drivers' skill and attention allows.

Sounds like I'll have to make the brake lights a lot brighter. When you get the car back together let me know what is broken and I'll replace them for free.

Wow, what a hit! Glad to hear you are OK Clay, at least physically right now. Things like this can come back again and again physically so keep that in mind when dealing with the insurance company.
In 2004 my wife was in our 2000 Saturn station wagon and she was blindsided on the passenger side. She wasn't terribly hurt at the accident scene, but got up the next morning and her shoulder hurt really bad. She signed off on a really cheap amount ( 6K) for pain and suffering from the insurance company. When I found out she did that I was pissed. I told her injuries like that will stay with you for life. Sure enough several times a year her shoulder acts up. No, I don't tell her I told you so.
Since your body man says he can fix it, that is good news and I hope that turns out well.
This brings out something we need to start doing when driving these cars. In motorcycle safety training, we are taught to scan all ways every 2 seconds or less. If you are the only one in a lane at a red light, be ready to move somewhere if you see an accident approaching from the rear. This saved my life several times in California when I rode every day back in the 70's and 80's. People just don't "see" a motorcycle due to the bike not being a threat to them. Same for a tiny 914. You will think this is too time consuming and hard, but after doing it for a time, it becomes second nature and you don't realize you are doing it. You need to be aware of what can threaten your safety at all times on a motorcycle, and now maybe 914's also.

Very glad to hear you are ok and Betty can restored to her former beautiful self, but what a pain in the meantime

I would recommend getting a big ass strobing third brake light for her as a get well present.

And from the side. I once smacked a pole on the passenger side hard enough that the passenger door covered the shifter. Walked away from that with only a sore hip for a couple of days. Wish I could find those pics.

FWIW: that bruised hip cam back to haunt me later in life.

Man, Clay, that was some hit. The part where you described the other drivers surrounding the perp reminded me of folks with pitch forks and torches. This is Texas, so it was probably shotguns and D-cell MagLites. Glad you are relatively OK. I'm praying for you guys.

And you have it. Fixing this 914 makes no financial sense, but it has to be done—as it's more valuable than a 250 GTO for all the right reasons.

Love the idea prompted above, of parts to help with the fix coming from this community, and realize that while I don't have any big body parts, I have some NOS bits for the rear trunk and maybe some other stuff too. Can we as a community start figuring out where to send them? Would be nice if all your body guy has to work on is the body—with packed shelves of bits to work from standing ready when it comes to reassembly. No phone time searching for parts—for any of you—would be a cool goal.

Meantime, take care of what matters most.

Oh man - that sooo deeply sucks.

That little 914 saved two lives that day - Clay’s and the dumb ass in the Honda. Image that impact into the back of a pickup. Honda guy is a goner in that scenario. He should be thanking you for being alive (and pay to fix Betty’s car, whatever the cost).

Do take care of yourself, Clay.

Best,
Tom

Let's do this thing, as there aren't that many parts on the back of a 914.

Someone will be better at this than me—but from the top of my head:

Tail panel (sounds like Clay and Betty have)
Quarter panel, left (sounds like Clay and Betty have)
Quarter panel, right (sounds like Clay and Betty have)
Trunk lid (Marty has)
Trunk lid hinges/rollers
Trunk lid rubber bumpers for rear corners
Rear trunk seal
Rear bumper
Rear bumper top
License plate holder
License plate lights
Taillight buckets (have one decent used one, I think)
Taillight lenses
Trunk latch (may have a spare)
Trunk button (have a nice used one)
Top stays, rear (have two NOS)
Top holders, front (have two, NOS)
Top latch buckets (have two, NOS)
Trunk light
Tail cone for 901 (Marty has)
Trailing arms
Targa bar trim

What else am I missing? I suspect plenty, but it can be added to the list.

It isn't much next to the bodywork to come, but it might save some hours and $$—and would make a pretty decent care package...

I am truly overwhelmed by the responses here. We both appreciate the desire of the community to help us out.

Dammit! Y'all need to stop stirring up so much F-ing dust!!!!

As some of you know, I have an extensive collection of 914 parts. Here is what I know I already have.

We have found locally the rear half of a 74. It was parted to fix another 914 that hit a fire hydrant in the front. I have not seen it yet, so I don't know what it has or doesn't have attached.

Tail panel (sounds like Clay and Betty have) Going to get a new one, if we replace the rear quarters.

Quarter panel, left (sounds like Clay and Betty have)
Quarter panel, right (sounds like Clay and Betty have)

For the quarter panels, we would love to find a pair of NOS or new repro ones. If not,we will use the ones on the rear clip.

Trunk lid ( I still have the original lid from Betty's car that was fire damaged on the front edge. Betty has expressed the desire to use that one. She wants to keep as much as possible from before the wreck.)

Trunk lid hinges/rollers (going to order from 914Rubber)
Trunk lid rubber bumpers for rear corners
Rear trunk seal (going to order from 914Rubber)
Rear bumper (I have that, but I can always use a better one.)
Rear bumper top (AA or 914Rubber)
License plate holder (I think i have a spare stashed away somewhere)
License plate lights ( Believe it or not, the left one is salvagable. I can't see the right one)

Taillight buckets (I have two spare pairs)
Taillight lenses (I have 2 spare sets in driver condition.)
Trunk latch (Both the upper and lower are intact and usable.)
Trunk button (Unless it is broken, I am going to salvage it.)

All of the top latches are intact and are still working. The top never left the car.

Top stays, rear (have two NOS)
Top holders, front (have two, NOS)
Top latch buckets (have two, NOS)

Trunk light (Undamaged).

Tail cone for 901 (I have two in my stash
)
Trailing arms ( I have 4 sets of spares)
Targa bar trim (Undamaged)

I will be pulling the rear sway bar off my car to replace it with a larger one, so I can use that one on Betty's car. Hopefully the links are not pretzel shaped.

Nothing on the targa bar was damaged. All of the electrical is intact and still working. I used the flashers at the scene, and the Spokeworks LED lights still work. The backup light board on the right lost 2 LEDs. I even turned on the park lights. The left license plate ligh still works too.

One of the things I am worried about is the rear shocks. One of the shock towers is torn, so I don't trust the shock on that side.

I also need stainless steel Heat Exchangers, a muffler hanger, and a Bursch muffler. I am fairly sure she will let me convert it to 2.0 HEs and muffler.

I will be posting Wanted to buy ads when I find I need other things.

And again... thank every one of you for wanting to help.

Supeana the black boxes on the Honda for data recovery. And with anti lock brakes, very few skid marks. My kid is a cop and has been to accident investigation school.

Good luck on the repair and ditto what has been said before. I'm sure it'll buff out just fine.

Clay -

So sorry this happened and sorry I didn't even see this until today, but I just "Amen!" everything that everyone else has been saying. Main thing for which I am thankful is that you are alive and well with only temporary pain - you are a valued and appreciated member here - and that's so clear from all the love you've gotten in responses.

As I'm relatively new to the 914 world, I don't have any good parts, but would be glad to contribute to the cause financially it that would help. I don't suggest a GoFundMe account as they take too much for themselves - we can just PayPal you.

Heal up quick - and if you can, keep us posted on the progress of getting your baby back.

The insured's company if a good one, will certainly have sympathy for your situation and address it accordingly.
You owned and historic well documented and well known 914 in the community, one that certainly qualifies for celebrity status among fellow 914 owners. Hence that puts a special value on your 914 above like cars out there.

Just as an FYI, and not sure its still available, but when I got rear ended a few years ago Porsche still had stock on the rear vertical taillight to taillight body panel. If i recall it was around 2k, but that was her insurance companies problem. They initially wanted to total the car for a ridiculously low pay out, I only had to tell them no once before they dropped 8k to fix it.
