This will be an “off the cuff” event. These are the suggested hotels but meals will be dependent on the COVID situation and of course your level of comfort and risk. Parking lot shenanigans the same. There are no group hotel reservations - call or go online to reserve as an individual unique person. biggrin.gif Please let me know if you plan to do your own thing in place of the organized food/meals.

Thurs Sep 10 Montrose, CO, Red Arrow Inn & Suites, 1702 E Main St, Montrose, CO 81401, 970-249-9641. Dinner 6:30pm at Horsefly Brewing patio, 826 E Main St, Montrose, followed by shenanigans.

Fri Sep 11, drive to Durango. There won't be an organized lunch so BYOL. We'll stop in Silverton for around an hour if you want to find lunch there.

Fri-Sun Sep 11-13 Durango, CO, Caboose Motel, 3363 Main Ave, Durango, CO 81301, 970-946-2518 ask for Maureen (if she doesn't answer, leave a message for Porsche 914 group and she'll call back)

Fri Sep 11, 5pm dinner at James Ranch Grill in their outdoor under tent seating, 33846 US-550, Durango, followed by shenanigan-agains

Sat Sep 12 drive is probably this. We'll have "lunch snacks" like chips, apples, veggies and cookies.
Attached Image

Sat Sep 12 dinner BBQ at Moorman’s, 346 Horse Thief Lane - 7.3 miles north of the Caboose - turn right at the stop light - then right into South Dalton Ranch. (We ❤️ Moormans) followed by she-nanigans.

Sun Sep 13 Hasta la bye-bye. bye1.gif drunk.gif

This is the https://www.customink.com/g/dsa0-00ca-9ta0. It’s an order and pay and Custom Ink ships so even if you can’t attend, feel free to order a shirt. *shirt ordering is closed*
This is, above all, an opportunity to connect with friends and deal crud about our cars, as always. cheer.gif drunk.gif smile.gif We will be wearing masks in situations we can’t socially distance.

I hope to join in, too. But VERY doubtful my 914 will be ready for the party.

Anybody who wants to see it (whatever state it is in then), or gets bored and wants to do some rebuilding, will be welcome!

I may be able to make it. 9/13 is my son's birthday but he's going to CA to visit friends AND it's also the 10-year anniversary of my 'teenership.

Of course Jim. I'll leave a day early and stay the night in Mesquite, NV then drive the remainder the next morning. Probably meet up with @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=481 for that 2nd leg.

This looks very tempting as we've wanted to escape the AZ heat for a while and were thinking of the Durango area.

Probably not in a 914- when you hit 70 you want AC! But it will be in a Porsche of some kind... The roads around there are to die for!

I usually don't take the direct route. Taking an extra day (or 2) to get back to Vegas would make me happy.

On the way back from Telluride I stopped at all the Outlooks I usually fly past and didn't get home til midnight. So this trip I'm open to an overnight someplace, specially since I expect to be in the little 914. The Partsfinder isn't up for anymore trips.

Sort of. Still overheating. Pretty sure the engine cooling passages are clogged from the coolant evaporating and crystallizing. I'm optimistic I can drop the motor and clean it out / replace things way before Sept.

No Pathy parts... yet laugh.gif . Clutch is starting to go. I've got nicer flips that need smaller fixes.

Now that I think about it, the cargo tie downs have been very useful idea.gif

I haven't asked the hotel in Montrose about this yet.

If my wife comes, we'll be towing behind the Sprinter. There is no way in the world that my wife will drive the Sprinter (or anything else) on 550. So I'm going to need to leave Sprinter in Montrose and come back for it.

Anyone else have this challenge and has made arrangements for your tow vehicle?

When I was a kid my dad drove our old converted airstream bus over 550. One of the most memorable trips we ever had. Coming out of Durango, bus started vapor locking on the way to the top due to the mechanical fuel pump bring on the engine and the tank being some ~40ft behind that (and we think 914s have it bad) My dad winds up pulling a 300 or so point U-turn on that skinny ass road but in order to do so a 12 year old me is hunched over the open engine bay spraying WD-40 into the carb of the 454 to keep the engine running. Pretty sure my mothers heart was stopped the entire time, she doesnt do well with cliffs.
Anyways, back to Durango, dad installed a secondary electric pump on the tank end and a few hours later we were back on the pass (last time my mother allowed us to go that way)

Seriously great memories!!

We did Red Mountain Pass with my then 16 year old son driving our van and towing our tent trailer - on a Bike the Rockies day with bicyclists who thought it was just fine to ride 3 abreast. My wife is NOT a fan (although Mike really did just fine).

The other option is to go through Telluride and Dolores. The makes the trip from Rigdway to Durango a 4 hour trip, instead of 2 hours on 550.

Yep - like Bob said. It is 6600 feet ASL in Durango but the mountain passes are closer to 11,000 feet. I have a 2143cc/4 carbed car that does fine over the passes (wide band AFR tuned at 6600 feet) - but you do lose HP at altitude. The worst case is you run rich (washing down the cylinders) which is better than running too lean I think. My 2.7L/6 fuel injected 914 doesn't blink at altitude.

Jeff can probably guide you better. @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=2744

I drove my carbed car on several mountain rallies and while yes it was a little rich I had no problems keeping up. There were a few time where I had to keep the rpms high and I did adjust the idle speed once or twice but the car was totally driveable and did not leave me stranded. Go for it.

Montrose looked like a good place to get some critical mail as we worked our way across Colorado. Nice place, but too warm at this time of year. I've seen all of Montrose that I need to see for a long time!

I cannot get a room in Durango.
I am planning on attending and was able to get a reservation at the Red Arrow Inn & Suites in Montrose.
Durango Downtown Inn is booked all the way into December. The gal on the phone said the dorms are closed so the college students are renting motel rooms. Sounds insane for the college students. Thats all I know. I could maybe tent it.

So I actually double booked (found a slightly better rate) and then never canceled my original reservation so at the moment I have 2 rooms reserved at the Durango. It was on my to-do list to call and cancel one of them tomorrow. If anyone is still looking for a room perhaps we can coordinate getting that 2nd reservation transferred.

I will hold off on canceling for now given there seems to be a room shortage.

Well....

sounds like the Durango Downtown Inn may be about to sheeplove.gif sheeplove.gif sheeplove.gif us dry.

Called this morning to see if I could transfer a reservation to another member and was told that they couldn't because not only can new reservations not be made but all existing reservations are going to be invalidated for dorm use during that time.

Hoping the girl I talked to was mistaken, but i guess better to find this out now than after driving 400 miles into the mountains of Colorado in a 50 year old car.

@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=3920 may want to call and verify this.

Great choice (The Hampton) but not close to downtown. The owner is Porsche guy - has a GT3 Cup Car and used to campaign in the GT4 Clubsport series (came in 2nd in the Western region). Eric Shea sees him at Miller Motorsports track (or whatever it is called now) where he is an instructor.

There is a trolley stop right at The Hampton for a ride into town.

Hi, everyone. I am a volunteer/part time professor at Fort Lewis College. Officially, dorms will be open in the fall. I don't know if the college has talked with hotel owners as a backup plan, or if parents are booking rooms on their own. In any case, most students live off campus anyway.

New hotel info on Post #1 and here is the https://www.customink.com/g/dsa0-00ca-9ta0!

New motel is Caboose Motel, 3363 Main Ave, Durango, CO 81301, 970-946-2518 ask for Maureen (if she doesn't answer, leave a message for Porsche 914 group and she'll call back). But PLEASE stay wherever you are comfortable. The COVID is a wily beast throwing wrenches in our plans.

Mike and I just stayed in Buena Vista for a long weekend. There are a lot of mask rules (rightly so), restaurants had long lines, some were still closed, and I DO NOT want me, Mike, or any of you to catch the Rona, so we're playing stuff by ear. Drives, no problemo. Meals, TBD still, likely to be a "do what you want" situation so we're not all involved in a sneezing on each other and everyone's pizza catastrophe. (insert sneeze emoji) drooley.gif Parking lot shenanigans, a 6'+ definite.

Yes - it appears that Fort Lewis is following the model adopted by most universities of 1 student per dorm room. That creates the need for more housing needs.

It’s a form vee

I think it inspired the riviera

It was a vw special wheel to honor the formula vee racing
1960 something

But some ended up on teeners
And folks call them rivieras

Brant - here is one way to do it.
  1. Remove your existing valance
  2. Install the valance that needs to be in Durango
  3. Drive to Durango
  4. Remove valance
  5. Drive home without a valance

Is anyone going back through vegas?

Posted by: SharonG Aug 29 2020, 11:58 AM

Hey Folks, I updated Post #1 with this information:

Please let me know if you plan to do your own thing in place of the organized food/meals, and let me know if there are attendance changes.

Sat Sep 12 dinner BBQ at Moorman’s (We ❤️ Moormans) followed by she-nanigans.

Red Mountain Pass between Ouray and Silverton got a little snow - but the road is clear. This will be the most sketchy part of the trip and it is just wet right now. Weather should be clear by Friday when the drive comes through the pass.

Ready to get out of the California snow (ashes) from the fires. Leaving in the morning. Wooohoo.

Yeah... that's what Denver metro area looked like last weekend. Before it started snowing...

You're in Fullerton? Buddy of mine and I took the train up there from San Diego and spent Thanksgiving with his family when I was in the Navy. Long time ago... Talk to you at the event.

Neither one of us cranked the AC on today. Absolutely a perfect day weather wise.I was thinking about it but once we climbed 1/2 way up the Cajon Pass temps stayed in the 70's. You should be here Oscar. beerchug.gif

We have extra chairs, if anyone is in need.

And speaking of need, if anyone needs roadside help near Durango let me know (281-650-3564). I can bring a jack, tools, and maybe spares (including 4-bolt wheels). I don't have a trailer any more, but can probably come up with one. And my garage is always available.

Hi all,

What a great event! Enjoying the pictures, but missing the participation and camaraderie with other teeners. We’re currently 5 weeks and 6k miles into a cross-county road trip (not in a 914), but towing a travel trailer with VanDiesel. Enjoying our first grand baby, Kyson, born in Charleston, SC on 9/2..

they actually are not Riviera's

they are form-vee wheels
older than rivs
and what rivs copied

no raised areas on the spokes
different lips and I think maybe different offsets also
larger hub cap hole

Posted by: 914Subaru Sep 16 2020, 11:12 AM

Thanks to all. We had a great time and being able to spend some quality time with my 28 year old son is priceless. We went up Pikes Peak on the way back, that was interesting and is a lot narrower than I thought from watching videos. 3300 miles in total, the car only got better the more we drove it and the more we appreciated it. The only glitch was early in the trip when one front tire rubbed the inner front fender when I hit a dip in the road so I stopped at a gas station and adjusted the front suspension up. It was great seeing all the cars and the stories about the cars. Most of the way back I was thinking of what I was going to improve on my car next like smaller diameter front rotor so I can move the wheels in and mount 7” Fuchs in the front also. Move my coolant lines out of the tunnel and redo the front clip and radiator. The Yakima cargo box was solid and I didn’t know it was there even at 100+. It was a great time and thanks to all.

Ross - it was great to meet you and Seth. Glad to hear that you are home safe.

Your car was a hit to say the least. Please plan on coming to Red Rocks Classic again - cheers!

You forgot the TENT.

I got both of my trunks unpacked last night

a tiny bit lighter... as I left a starter with Gint

this is the proper way to pack your trunks for an RRC event:

Took a few days sightseeing and got home late last night. Spent today putting a clutch in my daughters Jetta. smash.gif

Many thanks to Sharon for organizing, Mike and Kathy Wills for hosting Friday night and Mike and Mary Moorman for Saturday night. Always nice seeing old friends and meeting new people.

First, Thanks Ed!

Second, I found and fixed that annoying rattle! Muffler bracket nut came off the transaxle. The bracket would clatter at super low RPM under load. It was driving me insane. Gone!

Yes, that is Ouray.
I wasn't there during RRC 2020 but I know that is the location of the Wright Opera House.
