914World.com _ 914World Garage _ On BaT now. Maybe one of my favorite cars of all time.

Posted by: raynekat Jul 9 2020, 09:26 PM

I don't usually lust over cars in general, but for this one, I'll make an exception.
I remember reading about this car and drooling over the pics of the suspension, etc.
Dreaming could I do this.
Reality hit me as the money is deep on this build.
This car is so fast....it defies reason.
The color.
Pretty amazing power (382.6 hp) to weight (1860 lbs) ratio.
Just about everything on the car is killer.

If I wasn't already knee deep in too many projects as it is (914-6 conversion project completion, 73 RSR hotrod refresh, 63 VNB Vespa restoration and finally a vintage race go kart project), I'd be bidding on this one for sure.
Will be fun to watch.

Im sure its against some forum rule but

What price you think this will fetch ?
I mean parts alone it looks like 80k

Its not really street legal so that may effect $

Not sure you could fab the suspension alone on this car for $80k???
It's that trick.

In the day, nothing I mean nothing much could stick with this car.
I remember seeing it run on a couple of occasions.
It would destroy most anything else in the class.

And yes, it is a race car not meant for the street.
It's so low you'd never be able to drive it around town.

As much as I would love to see this car fetch top dollar, race cars on BAT without collector pedigree seem to have a tough time selling. If this were a streetable hot rod, not hard to reach $80k, but as a race car it will have a more limited bidding pool.

My guess is it stalls at $45-50k. Hope I am wrong.

I bought my 3.2 advertised as a track car for about $10-15k under what it would have sold as a street hot rod. Spent much more good money building back into a street rod - windows, interior, turn signals, wiring, and complete engine And transmission rebuild. I would not have seen any return if I had kept as a race car.

I still have my copy of Excellence, detailing the tubular rear trailing arms.
At the time, I thought of ways to escalate, adopting modern 21st century tech for stronger lighter. These days, I accept that the way it was done was to compete without complaints. A street car has no such constraints and could conceivably be improved, slightly.

Since the demand for such an iconic 914/6 will be breathtakingly elevated, I put the dollar sign above 60K, and well worth it, for such a trick toy.

Anyone know what the deal with the second damper on the a-arm is for?

The rear trailing arms are pretty neat too.

I just remember the suspension being so "trick" that it was warping my reality back in the day.

Bob....your car is a cut and a weld from being just like it. Ha drunk.gif

not two dampness, one is just for the coil over on the strut, the other is the true damper, mounted inboard.

Keeps the basics of the 9144 / 911 suspension design of the time, and might have done because of rules. As lots of other ways to do the suspension with out the strut design.

It's such a cool car. Someone told me there's no actual 914 left but the A-pillar which doesn't seem too far off.

When I first saw this post, I was thinking the same thing. Looks like maybe the cowl, the tail lights and the rear deck lid(kinda) are all actual 914.....not much else. Kinda like a NASCAR Toyota Camry is a Camry. But you have to admire the build, especially given its age.

There are several original 914 body parts left (cowl, firewall, etc.) as required by the rules to still qualify as a 914.

You had better be a seasoned driver for this beast.
I would assume its as fast or faster then racing 911 !

Some guy buying of bat better ask where the traction control button is ? beer3.gif
