914World.com _ 914World Garage _ lights in engine bay

Posted by: gulf908 Aug 2 2020, 04:39 AM

I am doing some research for Brett's new book and have come across a minor conundrum.
In the engine bay of my '70 USA -6 I have 2 orange lights on the rear panel facing forward
I can't find them in either the parts CD or the workshop manual
they look like they were installed at manufacture
has anyone else got these ??

TIA

Dennis they look like lamps that are commonly used here as marker lights on
trailers. That they are yellow not white is another clue.
Maybe remove one to see if there is any manufacture info.
If factory installed they'd most likely be Hella.
It is a good idea.
Some cars did have underhood lights from the factory.
914s had one.

Under hood lights from the factory?

Got a pic or wiring diagram of factory installed light?

Maybe he means the trunk lights.
I have never seen factory hood lights.

Yup, those are utility trailer lights. Example:

My bad.
Too early in the morning.
When seen at night the trunk light often lights up the left side of the engine room.

I think they were originally wrapped in black elec. tape limiting light in the engine room.

The trunk light does add one small panel of light to the engine bay

I have 3 LED lights, 4 if you count what comes off my trunk light in my engine bay. Perfect for working on the engine and bling-bling for cruising the strip, but sucks ass for real night driving with a GT lid. Not working right now as it ran off the trunk light and I had to yank the wire off one night driving home.
One day I'll add a switch and hook it back up.

I've had the same idea.
There's plenty of room.
Some Chevies had a innerfender mounted light with a re-wind extension cord.
Pretty cool.

I found this handy 12v "Courtesy" light from the Toyota MR-2. Has a strong magnet, on/off switch, and about 2' of spiral cord for moving around. I am using it in my '85 double cab engine bay.

thanks guys

I am now wondering why a PO bothered to remove the motor and actually install these lights - maybe he was expecting numerous night time breakdowns ??

cheers
