Was trying to remove the speedometer from my '73 today, but when temp reaced 103 I gave up. Is there a trick to doing this? I have removed the 6 screws holding cluster in, but cluster only comes forward about 2 inches. I cannot seem to reach from behind to disconnect drive cable or odo reset. Am I mising something? I am doing this to take a look at the odo drive gears. All works fine in the morning, but in afternoon odo does not work. Thanks in advance.
okay....take a sharp knife and get between the rubber and the metal.....seerate and pull the speedo....hold it out and undo the connections...the cable unscrews and the reset pulls out
take it inside and clean off the gears...put some dielectric grease in them....
Sounds like your speedo cable is too far to the rear. See if you can push some slack forward (from under the car). You should be able to pull the speedo out more than that.
the speedo (as all other gauges) should just slide out the front with some pressure from behind. it's just held in by the rubber ring around it.
see if you can free up the speedo cable a bit under the dash to give you more slack ...

pop out the tach, reach through the hole, disconnect the speedo cable and the trip speedo reset cable.

the trip odometer cable detaches under the dash. set screw holds on the knob. then take the nut off the threaded shaft around the cable itself.
