WCR 2020, November 5th - 8th, Petaluma, CA.

***** Please read the second post on this thread for REGISTRATION details *****

******************************************************************
.

After cancelling the WCR that was scheduled for July 2020, so many of us have been struggling to get through the many challenges that have hit us from MANY different angles. My hope was that the health and economy of our great country would be better by now.... but it seems that getting back to "normal" may take a while.

That said, some of us feel that we can manage a WCR by focusing on the drives and respecting social distancing.

So.....

I propose that we schedule a WCR for this year - November 5 - 8th, 2020. Petaluma, California.

Arrive Thursday, depart Sunday.

I cannot promise that we will have ALL of the details associated with other WCR's, but with the help of local members like TygaBoy (Chris) and Mark Howard, we will make it a fun and exciting event.

Here's what you can expect:

* Social Distancing and mask-wearing
* Box lunches and outdoor BBQ style meals
* T-Shirt
* Trophies / Awards (longest drive to the event, most original car, best custom build, etc.)
* Tech Day
* 50th Anniversary Grill Badge!!!!!
Mystery / Surprise event

And.....

EPIC DRIVES!!!!!

Here's the reality..... getting back to normal may take a while. In the meantime, driving our cars is one of the things that we can still manage to do responsibly and safely. The Wine Country of Sonoma County has endless backroads just waiting for us to tear up!

Registration is TBD, but will be in the spirit of other WCR events..... well-under $100 including T-shirt and a Group Meal. I will also try to have a special Grill Badge made up for this special year (optional).

The suggested motel will (again) be the Motel 6 in Petaluma. They were the most affordable this last time around, and ...... wait for it....... are located one block from the Lagunitas Brewing Company"!!!! The same side of the block, in fact! You don't even need to navigate crossing the street! They have a beer garden that will make for a very nice home base for us.

(Don't expect a lot from the Motel..... you will likely get a room for around $100/night.... in an area where the average is around $300/night). But the motel is centrally located, and safe.

Here is the info for the Motel:

Motel 6
(707) 765-0333
1368 N. McDowell Blvd.
Petaluma, CA 94954

The weather in November is awesome in the Bay Area. Not too hot/cold.

Before anyone shoots me too many questions, let me just say this...... I do not expect everything to go perfectly as planned. I will do my best to make plans that center around driving, primarily. Everything else will be planned with the expectation that plans could change due to ... well.... whatever. The good thing is that we are all used to last-minute change.

Short of a major emergency, the event will go on with as many participants that sign up and show up. We can make this a memorable event with 2 members or 100.

More details and a sign up system to follow...... for now, I wanted to give everyone a couple of months to plan.

Thank you to all the members who have been encouraging us to make this happen..... not only for the drives, but as a way to stay in touch and have a great time with fellow members.

We are ready to take your registration for WCR 2020!!!!

Dates are finalized as November 5th - 8th

Please send an email to me, Robert (Buddy V.) to begin the registration..... I will reply with an attendee information sheet that I will use to know the car you are bringing, special diet needs, contact info, etc.

email: robert@northbayofficefurniture.com

Cost for the event will be $75/person ($65/attendee now... no t-shirt). (paypal same address)

Your $75 ($65) will help us cover the cost of the BBQ dinner on Saturday, T-shirt, Awards, beer, water, donuts, possibly an event poster, etc, etc......

We are planning the heck out of the drives to make sure you enjoy Sonoma/Napa counties..... We are super excited to host all of you for three+ days of driving & socializing.

Here is a general peek at the agenda (detailed agenda will be sent to you prior to the event):

Thursday, November 5th:
Arrive and relax (make sure to book your room at the Motel 6). No formal plans this day, but I will make sure that we gather at a beer garden at happy hour. Lagunitas is 100 yards away from the hotel. Details to follow.

Friday, November 6th:
Morning drive to Napa.... we will be stopping half way at a winery that has a killer deli..... relax a bit for lunch, and continue the drive. Head back toward home..... second drive that afternoon. Optional dinner/beer gathering to finish the day.

Saturday, November 7th:
Meet up early for coffee and donuts..... a bit of a surprise "Tech Day" in the planning stages. Morning drive consists of the Sonoma Coast (Epic!). Dinner this evening is the group dinner.... BBQ and awards ceremony.

Sunday, November 8th:
Although this is the final day and most will be departing, we are open to the idea of continuing the event for those able to stay an additional day. This will be a slower driving day.... stop at a couple of wineries and take it easy. Optional dinner at a "nicer" location (Bring cleaner jeans). I will open the final day to anyone interested. This might be a great option for those of you bringing a spouse.

Petaluma has a very nice KOA.... check it out. my family has stayed there, and were impressed.

or reach out to Tygaboy..... he has offered RV parking. Not sure of the limitations.... and the KOA would have showers, etc.

Good luck.

Call me if there is anything that I can do locally to arrange your stay:

Thanks Robert !!!
I googled the area and that was the first place to show up. I also have friends and a few projects happening in that area.
Give me a week or so to pull the trigger.

Just PayPal'd you for me and my wife (Nancy). She's nailing down a place at KOA; I'll be flat-towing behind our RV. Can't wait to actually DRIVE my Suby-powered 914 at a WCR event and not be just an observer!

November has never been part of the fire season (at least historically) so the fires shouldn't have any affect on the event.

The fire mostly roared through eastern, rural mountainous areas of the county. It did hit a few vineyards in Napa County and took out a couple of dozen houses, etc, here in Santa Rosa. Overall it could have been a lot worse had the wind be stronger and lasted longer, not to say it wasn't a terrible time for those that did lose their houses.

Hi, I live about 2 hrs from the Napa area. Is there an option to just join the group for the drive and BBQ on Saturday? Do I still sign up and pay the $75, or is there a reduced rate just to cover dinner? I am fine either way, thanks.

Posted by: BuddyV Sep 30 2020, 07:33 PM

Deetman -

No one has asked, so I had not thought about that..... but I would probably charge $50 for the dinner.

Makes sense to support the event at $75 and get the t-shirt and event registration (Name tag, etc etc.)

I agree, the time and personal money spend for the volunteers to put on these events is very grateful and we appreciate all that they do.

Would love to caravan down with you - hoping to leave our area around 6am to make sure we get donuts and coffee before the drive. smile.gif

FYI -

Best way to start the registration process is:

A. Paypal $75/attendee to robert@northbayofficefurniture.com

B. That will prompt Paypal to email me that money has been received

C. The Paypal email will prompt me to email you an info sheet that I would like filled out and sent back to me

(Paypal includes your email address when you pay me $ at Paypal).

Sorry to those who sent me emails with questions and were overlooked..... the emails got buried in my inbox.

But..... Paypal emails get my immediate attention.

Thank you to all who have registered! We already have plenty of cars to make this an epic (for the times) event!

Cheers!

Has any schedule been put together? Are people arriving during the day on Thursday and organized drives start Friday morning? People leaving for home on Sunday? Just trying to plan a travel schedule from SoCal.

Posted by: TRE Cup Oct 8 2020, 05:55 PM

Registered ! The Evil Cockaroach will be there. Leaving Thursday morning from the Los Angeles area. 3-4 Sixers so far
we have 3 different route options to decide on- anywhere from 6.6 to 10 hours of driving depending on inland jogging off the 5, or the coast (2 options) for some awesome roads

Schedule is still being worked out..... a lot of road blocks due to the recent weather issues. But I can assure you that the weather is almost 100% clear now... schedule should be finalized very soon.

But for now, your outline was spot on.

A. Arrive on Thursday.... no formal event plans..... but I will be encouraging us to have an informal meet-up at Lagunitas Brewery Beer Garden down the street from the Motel 6

B. 9am meet up on Friday morning, 10am drive off (Evening event plannned)

C. 9am meet up on Saturday morning, 10am drive off (Evening Dinner plennned)

D. Sunday.... last day.... early morning meet up at a group coffee & donuts, workinng on a very cool tour. (People depart as they need to depart)

Will be fun..... formal schedule very soon. I

I am just waiting for a few more details . Thank you for your patience, guys..... it is not as difficult as I thought it would be to plan.... but a few details are pending.

Cheers!

If u leave at 10-11 then you run into Bay area traffic. It’s a long drive earlier the better.
We could stop at Harris Ranch for a stretch and a bite.

Posted by: Cairo94507 Oct 11 2020, 05:53 PM

If you guys stop at Harris Ranch do the BBQ across the street in the Shell Station otherwise you will get too comfortable inside Harris Ranch and be there for hours as you eat and drink..... Trust me, spent way too many nights at Harris Ranch in their Prime Steak House with friends- just great 5 star dining and service. beerchug.gif

Mark Howard and I took a test drive for the "Napa Drive", scheduled for the Friday of WCR...... I snapped a few pics for you guys.

Disclaimers:

A. Forgive his ass-dragger 911..... I promise he has a killer 914 that was afraid of the potential for pot-holed dirt roads.

B. The pics of the dirt roads and gravel are NOT on the drives. Your paint is safe (good thing we took the test drive)

And finally, the smoke in our area is almost totally gone..... fingers crossed for continued great weather leading up to the event.

OK.... now for some shots.

(More pics after this next weekend when we drive the "Coast" route.

Others are welcome to join or even catch up or we can catch up with you. PM me and we can exchange phone numbers. I'll talk to Mike when the date gets closer and see what we're doing.

I think it would be great to all drive up together, but seems everyone is leaving different times and days, trailering or driving... If someone puts together a schedule, I'll be leaving North Hollywood early Thursday (Wed night) ?

Working on getting all the So Cal Teeners to up meet in Gorman as we are all coming front different directions with a meet up spot away from LA. Probably around 7am Thursday morning as the South Orange County people will have to be on the road no later then 5am to get ahead of the traffic.

Sounds like a great time will be had by all. My car is in a state of disassembly to fix a few electrical issues and the 789mile trip each way to Petaluma is way out of my wheelhouse to start a drive....

Have fun fellas.

I was planning on I5. Last time some people took 101/1 to Rennfest and were stuck behind RV's for days. I personally don't think its worth it. It's already going to take over 8 hours taking I5 from south orange county.

**** Update ****

**** Update ****

We are working hard to get the schedule finalized..... we hit our first major snag with the location for the starts for each of the drives. No biggie..... we were able to find an even better location.

Just waiting to get approval for the location.... then I can email all the attendees.

Drives..... we will have two (2) drives, a "Napa" drive and a "Coastal" drive. As of today, we have driven both..... and they are amazing!

We are looking forward to hosting all of you..... the weather has been incredible..... cross your fingers that it remains this nice.

Again, thank you all for being so patient..... it's all coming together..... the schedule will be emailed early this week.

Just came "down" Hwy 1 and 101 2 weeks ago, it makes the trip "much longer" and up you can't see the coastline at many points, down is better... IMHO

Here's a question for you guys, I read further back in the thread that sometimes questions get lost in Roberts inbox.

I'm flying into L.A. and coming up with a friend in his 914. I don't usually like going on drives like this as a passenger. Would I still be accepted if I rented a Boxster through Turo for the actual drive?

Of course, didn’t even need to ask.....although there is the Boxster drivers have to buy the, beer3.gif rule

We are meeting up with other SoCal drivers in Gorman to caravan on the way up to NoCal.

I've been to multiple WCR's and some people bring there "other" Porsche when there 914 is not available. Usually a boxster or Cayman, but sometimes a 944, etc.

Guilty as charged..... I do lose a few burried emails. But I hope you received my reply email (personal email)...... we are happy to have any cars attend, as long as they have love for the 914

(and like i suggested.... do the Turo rental.... get a Boxster.... and give me a ride!)

Cost for the event will be $75/person. (paypal same address)

Your $75 will help us cover the cost of the BBQ dinner on Saturday, T-shirt, Awards, beer, water, donuts, possibly an event poster, etc, etc......

Hi all,

Late to the game, but we're coming! Would like to join the group driving up I-5 from So Cal on Thursday. We live an hour east of I-5 & the 152 intersection. Will the group be stopping at Harris Ranch as someone suggested? If you are, that's an hour south of where we'd connect with you. If someone can call me when you first arrive, that'd give us time to catch up with you as you're passing the 152.

Thank you,

Meet up spot for all the SoCal gang will be the McDonalds off the 5 fwy in Gorman at 7am. There is a Shell station across the street for a fuel top off.
We can decide from there where are next stop is, Harris Ranch or other ??

I think the plan is just get there as fast as we can

Pm me if your meeting us in Gorman
Those meeting up so far are
Coondog
Steve
914 toy
914 RZ-1
Mike D
Danny Mac
DK 23

We will meet you at Gorman.

As I messaged Coondog, Actually, it’d make more sense to meet 5 minutes further up I-5 at Santa Nella as Los Banos is about 10 min east of I-5 on 152. Santa Nella is right on the 5 and has several gas stations including a Love’s Travel Stop.

Because there’s so many freeways out of LA, the big meet up spot will be Gorman at 7am with a set time to get back on the 5 by 7:30am. Our next stop for fuel and food will be the In out Burger in Santa Nella. Should be there by 10:30 am. We can then discuss what the best route into Petaluma is and if we make another stop.

Hoping I’m not too late but can finally sign up! Will arrive Friday afternoon and probably there through Saturday night. Just got my 1970 914-6 (tribute- oh well) this summer and looking forward to reconnecting. Sold my previous 6 (real one) quite a few years ago (big mistake) after owning it for close to 15 years of auto cross, time trails and vintage racing (all done while using it as my daily driver)!

7T914-6 +1. Will send PayPal this evening. Very excited to meet and chat! May post a new unused 914-6 header (1-5/8” - non-heat exchanger - painted steel, purchased new from Automotion). Could bring to the event if someone was interested.

Thanks for putting this all together. It’s been a tough year in our area here. We need this!

@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=3898 @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=20897 Last evening, Robert and Mark came to the Red Barn for a WCR awards assembly session. Despite consumption of beer, the awards look surprisingly straight! beerchug.gif

We're pretty impressed with ourselves - check out the vinyl look we were able to achieve on that sail panel! av-943.gif

Note the other awards that are visible still have the positioning mask over the decals, hence the blurd-ish look.

So, which of you lucky folks will take this one home? We'll know at the post-dinner presentation in ONLY ONE MORE WEEK!!!

Looking forward to seeing everyone! Safe, safe travels to Petaluma.

The hotel is a MOTEL.... so.... uh... no.

Lagunitas is half a block down the street. If that doesn't work for us, there are a handful of breweries with patios.

In case I forget have a great and HAPPY BIRTHDAY! WOW I just realized I bought my first almost new 914 around the time you were born. Last minute working on the car can’t wait to see all. I’m bringing both our boys. Winston did the last WCR and will be coming with me and Manas our oldest 28 year old will be looking for a passenger seat for the Saturday run. Manas is wanting to build a 914/big Subby. Putting a Feeler out for anybody with a 914/Subby or that has a empty passenger seat.

What a terrific time! My brother and I were only there for the Friday and Saturday portion of this event but we had a great time. It means so much to be able to connect actual people to our screen presence.

A huge THANK YOU to Chris @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=19241 Robert @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=3898 Randy @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=108 and Mark @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=20897 and anyone else who had their hands in this, for all they did to make this event happen.

The cool cars were all well worth seeing. Every time Dan started his V-8 914 it gave me chills- that car just sounds amazing.

Finally seeing Pete Stout's amazing car, which he has owned since he was 15 (If I heard him right) was bitchin. I also learned a bit about our cars history. Thanks Pete for the nice talk and of course the cool water canister.

I drove sweep on both days of driving and 2020 continues to be a unique year. The tally for cars that started the event at Live Oak Farm:

- Not a single break down
- I didn't open my tool box
- The floor jack never left its spot in the bed of my truck

Yes, @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=626 lost his starter (or something that prevented his beast from starting w/the key) but there were always folks ready to jump in and help with a bump start!

All the cars from Friday morning's start are in the Saturday evening group photo!
(OK there may have been folks who left early, but you get the idea...)

What a cool group of cars. Most importantly, what a great group of people. pray.gif

Thanks to each of you for helping make WCR 2020 one for the record books! beerchug.gif

Got home safely put 1,250 miles on the 911. We had a wonderful time and thank you for putting it together. On our way back we stopped at San Francisco and visited Michelle’s parents at Presido cemetery and then had a wonderful lunch in Monterey.

It was great to see everyone and meet new people.

I will post pictures later.

I've attended several WCRs over the years, but this was my first where I actually drove my 914. Needless to say, it was the best one so far for me! I took hardly any pictures, since I spent most of my time talking with my some new and many long-time 914 friends, so most of the pics below are from Nancy's iPhone.

First pic is of my beast hooked up to the motorhome. Due to COVID-19, we decided to provide some space by staying at the nearby KOA. I really missed hangin' with everyone at Motel 6, but this was the only way that my wife Nancy would come along and we enjoyed ourselves immensely.

Attached Image

Cali914 is building an Ecotec-powered monster, so we had a great time chatting about our modifications. I look forward to seeing his car soon.

Attached Image

The first day's drive was great, and I really enjoyed watching DANNYMAC flog is original 20k mile car right in front of me! The pic below is in the trees somewhere in the Sonoma mountains.

Attached Image

The day ended at Bear Republic Brewery in Santa Rosa. It was great to see that, despite some pretty rough roads and some great twisties, all cars seemed to have made it unscathed. Here's a pic of the parking lot.

Attached Image

Next up is a vista point along Highway 1. Again, a great time to hang out, try to socially distance and talk about our cars. Below is a pic of me and my most-patient wife, who has supported me throughout my 11-year build (that is still far from "done").

Attached Image

Although there are many great pics above, and I can't wait to see Matt's drone shots, I thought I would add one that I really like.

Attached Image

Thanks to everyone who helped set up this great event. I can't wait to move my car to the next phase over the winter! Now I'm off to update my build blog...

Good seeing a lot of you on Friday. I'm dealing with some pain issues and couldn't make it all day Saturday, though I did run out to the river late morning yesterday and ran into a few of you in Guerneville. We had a small caravan over the Bohemian Hwy and then down to Freestone.

I shot a little bit of video at the ranch on Friday using the big camera and gimbal -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFIdhUcf870 - Just 30 seconds of footage, but for those of you that got a little lost I think you'll get it! blink.gif

This video is 4:30 long, but it's pretty ho-hum GoPro footage. I didn't have the suction cup mount with me, so I was limited on angles. Anyway, here ya go -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kITJyOuEKvk

Thanks to everyone that made this happen.

Hope to see everyone next year,

Randy

Me once I finally got to Reno about 11:30. Got stuck waiting for them to open the pass without chains. Talk about crazy. 4wd has always counted for me in Oregon. Guy told me I not only needed them on my truck. I needed them on the rear wheels of my car I was towing as well WTF.gif . My other option was waiting for them to open it up without chains. So I sat there for an hour waiting for that. Then drive super slow over the pass. Apparently nobody there drives in the snow or something. ARGH anyway take a look at the mess that is my car. I think it is even worse now sitting in my garage. I'll have to take another picture tomorrow before I clean it up. Well my 2 1/2 detour to Reno ended up taking like 6. Took me just under 9 hours to drive down for WCR. I left about 6 am this morning & got home about 10:30 tonight. After Reno had plenty of slow icy snowy roads getting back to I5. Man what a long flipping day

Having reported I am home safe. Thank you to all the organizers. Really was a fun weekend & great to see everyone

@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=129 - Wow, that is just crazy that it took that long for you to get home and your car is pretty dirty. It was great meeting you and thanks for giving my bro a ride back to the Motel 6 Friday night. He liked your car a lot. beerchug.gif

@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=129 - Geez, when we said we hoped everyone had a blast, that's not what we had in mind! biggrin.gif
Fingers crossed all that washes off and you're good to go.
Great to finally meet you and happy to hear you're safely home.

Awesome people, awesome event. Hats off to the organizers. The drives and views were amazing. Next time, can you fix all the pot holes on the roads?? Just kidding!! Loved the tight corners and views on Friday's run, but I thought my car was going to break apart on the pot holes!! Saturday's run through Bodega bay, was also amazing!! I gave my long distance award to Brandon since he did all the driving!! See you next year!!

.... the pot holes were there on purpose... think of it less like a drive, and more like an autocross course.

That IS a bitchin' pic...out in the Wild , love it !

Thanks for sharing the 914 pics, also like the small rear window VW.

Thanks to everyone who organized the trip and also for everyone who showed up to make the event so fun. Not the best roads the first day but a nice costal drive the second day. Its always nice to meet new friends at these events. Put over 1200 miles on the car it ran great. No new pics that are not already on there.
Thx again

The policy with our Vegas driving group is that if you see any number greater than 60 on your dash, you must be looking at the temperature gauge. ph34r.gif

What a great event Thank you everyone for doing such a great job putting this event together. Sung had a great time at the event and the quintessential WCR experience working on his car right up to the time to get on the road and then some. He made the 900 mile roundtrip drive in his V8 outlaw.
I ended up going to meet some friends in San Francisco Sunday morning to go down to Santa Cruz. It was a bonus day of driving ending with a visit to check out a 914-6 tribute. Hopefully we will be seeing them at the next WCR.
Got to spend some time with @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=19241 Chris and really check out his masterpiece in progress first.gif Got some rest and then up early Monday for the long drive home.
It has been a rough week since I made it home but I will get more photos up as I can.

Nicely photo app also on Sung’s car. that is why the hood was open on that image.

Try as I might, I couldn't invent a reason for a business trip out to LA from UK to be there and tag along.
You guys know sure how to do it right... Respect!

lol-2.gif Too funny Andrew Sung is a great guy and actually has offered to help promote us. He has become more of a friend like many of you and as most of you know, I believe in community first so let's just let him have some fun and be part of the community. I am sure that everyone who had some time to talk with him at the events that we have gone to together, will attest to what a good guy he is. He is very down to earth, open and honest. He is aware of his "fame", (almost a dirty word) and while he respects that and the opportunities that it creates for him, he also is tough and cheek about it.
This is the perfect example:

Caution, spoiler alert. There may be a plot reveal from the next Fast and the Furious movie F9 popcorn[1].gif idea.gif lol-2.gif

Robert, Chris, Mark, spouses and all the others who worked to put on the WCR,

Thank you again for putting this fantastic event. The food, the drives, the cars, the speaker, the awards and especially the interaction with all the other teeners was amazing. You certainly have raised a high bar for future events.

Blessings,

Jerry & Cathy
