914World.com _ 914World Garage _ warm air blower wiring

Posted by: pt_700 Sep 12 2020, 02:25 PM

i'm in the process of replacing my 1.7 & trans with a better condition 1.7 & trans from a trusted source. since it's been so many years, it's been helpful to check the "new to me" motor as i disconnect things from the old motor.

i'm stumped on the wires for the hot air blower though. new motor doesn't seem to have them & the wires for the blower on the old motor seem to be part of the harness that stays with the motor.

can someone offer enlightenment as to possible differences in the wiring and if i might be able to wire up some sort of bypass, or should i swap over the harness (seems like a lot of work...)?

old motor has the 2 hose blower as seen in the pictures. new motor is in the 1st;

looks like everything is correct, fan mounts on top of the blower housing, and the wires are there for in the ignition harness

thanks for chiming in, george. i've looked everywhere on the engine harness and don't see it. i do see, what look to my untrained eye, a few possible modifications (single wires that change color through a connector) though...

there weren't model years that may have had this connect to the relay block? if i can't find the connector, could i wire to somewhere there (a mechanic friend who worked on these new back in the day suggests)?

i'll reach out to the seller and see if he can shed some light on this.

You never mentioned the years of the chassis or engines you have.

If you are talking about a 1970-72 car, they do not have the heater fan wiring in the main chassis harness. The 1970-72 ignition harness supplies the green/brown wires for the heater fan.

1973-76 D-Jet cars include the branch off the main chassis harness for the heater fan and uses a different ignition harness than the earlier models.

thanks jeff! my car's a '71, the newer motor's an unknown...

sounds like it's '73-76...

will this cause other issues as i install and attempt to get it running?

newer motor came from a '73. thankfully, i found my texts with the seller and he's quick to reply!

The SN will tell you the year.

appears to be; EA093558 (sorry for the poor picture quality).

seller says it was from a '73 and the wires came from the chassis harness "under the fuse panel" (i'm thinking relay board?).

how's the air inland jeff? still pretty thick here in san jose, perhaps a mile or two of visibility. i'm surprised there's no smoke smell...

162 AQI here today. Staying indoors again today.

Just use the 73-76 ignition harness or get a new one.

could you please elaborate on the harness, jeff? i'm pretty green when it comes to wiring... it's ok to say it like i'm totally clueless slap.gif

For the d-jet cars, there are only 3 variants. A 1970-71 version, a 1972-only, and a 1973-76 version. A main difference is the heater fan circuits. Diagrams of each are on my website if you want to study them.
