Working on that white Fresno car and I have two rebuilt CV/axles but one has pins, two per side, and the other does not.
I have two spare (needig servicng) that have dowels - can I just lmoves the dowels over to the ready to use ones?

The issue I alluded to in another thread is that since 914 CV's are NLA it is typical to use T1 CV's in their place. BUT while dimension are similar, they are not the same.
If that is what you have, the roll pins, dowels, spring pins (whatever) will not fit in the T1 CV without machining. Another giveaway is the T1 CV's will not have a recess machined for the use of a gasket.

Yes they are required.
The prevent the two parts from moving relative to one another in shear. It would take way more clamp load then the four fasteners could provide to keep the surfaces from moving relative to one another under load.
Thank you very much for the responses, I will do some checking, I think they’re 914 but if so they’ve been messed with and, well, you know how that goes.
Just to follow on here and be more explicit, should I assume if any of the axles do not have the dowels/alignment pins that they are probably not 914?

So with the VW ones “just” find the alignment pin size and take a drilll to open up two hole we’re the bolts would have gone?
Anywhere special to get the alignment pins?
Does this picture show the groove that the gasket sits in there by making this a 914/6 axle/CV?
Good morning. So I cleaned the various sets of these axles that I had laying around in preparation for rebuilding them.
I was able to confirm that this ring on the outside match is the known to be 914 CV joint/axles and the length is identical.
So that seems to confirm that these are 914/6 axles? Any advantage to using these on a/six build or are the equivalent in strength to the four-cylinder 914 ones? To use the 6 foot ones I need a matching six bolt flange installed under the transmission I believe, yes?
A more definitive way to confirm would be to count the splines on the driveshaft/CV. I don’t remember off hand what the spline counts were but somebody here will chime in or Google is your friend.
I want to say 31 splines for the -6 and 36 splines for the -4. But that’s a WAG.
