914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Rear Emblem Questions and Advice

These are the rear emblems that came with my 73 2.0, that the PO had mounted on the engine lid. They are a dark silver with very dark (maybe black, originally) on the edges.

On the backside, one stud was broken and re-attached, and then broken again. Others look bent. One emblem has a flush rear surface, the other is recessed.

Questions:

Do these look original for a 73? Did Porsche install different color emblems depending on paint color?

Given my new paint (Racing Yellow), what color would look best?

And given that the shop filled the emblem mount holes, any reason not to just surface mount the emblems?

To my understanding, all 73’s came with the silver/ grey emblems.

They were anodized black but fade in color.
Go with what you like for color. Surface mount with thin double side tape works.

My 1.7 and 914 emblem on the back of my 73 are also black. But I have no way of knowing if it came from the factory like that.

I have just used 3M clear VHB tape to support the PORSCHE letters on my engine lid. It provides a solid and invisible connection. I did add the speed nuts on the back too....!

Related question - does anybody know where I can get a 2.26 emblem to go on the back of my GT Tribute with 2258 uprated 4?? I seem to think I have seen somebody doing these in the past.

73-74 had black anodized 914 and engine size. 74-75 had black plastic 914 and engine size. The 75's were on with tape and had no posts. 76 had black decals.

According to the 914 Restorer's Guide to Authenticity (B. Johnson) the 1973 cars had black anodized aluminum scripts. 74 and 75 cars had black plastic. 76 cars had black vinyl which is what my 76 car has.

Thanks, everyone. I like the "faded" black on my emblems, and the stick-on solution. No holes to redrill--or leak.

My 75 has posts and holes in the rear panel. It had the plastic emblems, but I replaced with metal. The 9 kept breaking off of the 14 and I couldn't get it to stay straight.

Brett Johnson posted this evening on Facebook that the new edition is in and will be shipped tomorrow to all who pre-ordered it. Updated and lots of color pics. It is a really important resource for those who want to stay authentic, or at least partially so.
