Hi, Ive just started my 914 reno and new to 914's. It did not come with the battery. Can anyone advise what battery I should buy? Cheers

I think Optima Red top would be the most recommended around here.

Bosch 96R is another good one... If you are me, you buy whatever fits from walmart. Because it was better than no battery. smile.gif

Edit: The group sizes that do fit are 96, 42 and 46.
Cheers

Thanks heaps Jared. I've also been reading that group size 42 is common. Hopefully, she will start very soon. Cheers

Group 42 is the battery size that you want.

If you move to a lithium battery (some people like them, I used one and went back to lead acid) the Odessey PC925 is the battery you want to use.

Sounds like 42 is the way to go. Thanks Zach. BTW. I imported the car here to Saudi Arabia so will need to search around for equivalent quality batteries.

I just ditched the Optima Red Top in my car because I didn't like the fit and replaced it with this Super Start Platinum Battery Group Size 47 H5 (there are other brands that are pretty much the same battery). This one fits perfectly in the battery tray without having to trim as the Optima requires, accepts the factory hold down unlike the Odyssey. EDIT: the factory recall battery cover fits perfect unlike the Optima but just bare DOES NOT clear the rain tray when the engine lid is closed. I'm also in the camp that thinks using AGM batteries is a great idea unless you like cutting and patching rust in the hell hole.

@Fejsa, sorry to join your thread! I’m also in the process of buying a battery. Anyone has an idea using Interstate AGM battery and what group number? thank you!

This may help with choosing group size https://www.batteryequivalents.com/bci-battery-group-size-chart.html
I thin Group 42 was the stock size but those aren't very common anymore. I can say that Group 47 fits fine and Group 34 also works but I had to trim the length a little and the height is pushing the limits. Group 47 is just 3mm longer than a 42 but fits the tray fine, and 17mm taller than a 42 but 10mm shorter than a 34. From my limited experience, I'd say Group 47 is the sweet spot between availability and fit.

I just discovered that the rain tray dips down just enough at the rear to interfere with the corner of the factory recall battery cover and pop it off when fitted to a Group 47 battery. It took a little sleuthing to figure out why the cover snapped on the battery so nicely and the engine lid shut perfectly, but whenever I opened the lid, the cover was popped off. Bummer. I guess you really need to stick with a Group 42 battery to use the recall cover. I edited my earlier post to correct it.

Couldn’t find a 42R in AGM so went with a 96R and the fit is perfect. Haven’t tried the recall cover yet because the battery handle has yet to be removed.

Been using an odyssey 680. Seems to have ample cranking power and is quite light. I’ve been running it for last six months in a ‘73 2.0

I run the 680 in my 3.0 /6 about the size of a lawn tractor battery, but the 925 is also a good choice. The Odyssey batteries need a custom battery mount and the battery posts are extra. You can find better Odyssey prices than on the summit link.
