Seems now that I am ready and able, most of the places I know of are shut down and gone now.

So, who is out there doing body and paint on a 914 that are good, have a reputation, and maybe a few people have used them?

I am willing to ship the tub to the right shop.
I will strip it to a tub, or maybe let them do all of that...not sure.

Maybe check in with Chris Foley at CFR in Manchester CT? He's local. I know he's more focused on his products these days, but he knows lots of people. If Chris told me they were good, that'd be good enough for me.

Have a shop strip the body and redo all the metal work? Why didn't I think of that?

Rich I was in the same spot five years ago. Finally asked the guy at the body supply shop who is a good auto painter.....Answer, Motor cycle /Hot rod shop two miles away. It took me six months of talking to him to do the job. Results, great. Best, Mark

Yep. I'm happy with my paint...and the guy (Steve at S&T in da Bronx) is great. I'd probably try to find someone more local to you, however so you can check in on the process. One lesson I learned...there's nothing more expensive than a cheap paint job. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. I figure a factory-type paint job will take 80 hours, assuming the car is already stripped. That, plus about 1.5K in materials and you get to about 10K. Could be lower in less expensive parts of the country.

I’ve seen some excellent work from them, he was recreating a Dino from a chassis that was about 50% rusted away - worth a visit just to check them out . He works on junk to magnificent cars (Porsche. 904 etc.)

As Pete mentioned I had Stalltek in Wellman, IA do my '73 2.0 . Check out an article in a recent issue of 000 about Neil and Lee Schlabaugh. There is even a picture of my car at their "shop."

They mainly do 356's but are true artists. I'm in their queue to do my '71. I plan on taking it there myself from AZ as it will be a roller. It was a lot easier when I still lived in IA!

Highly recommended.

I'd call a local hot rod shop and ask where they get their cars painted.

If its at a shop that does more than just paint jobs/metal repair then move along.


Honestly the painting is the easiest part and any shop that gets insurance work can do a good enough job. But its the rust repair or fab that really is the issue.

If the chassis is good and straight and were talking minor bodywork and paint... Then just take it to a shop that will kick the work out in a month. It'll be worth having it DONE vs having a shop take 8 months on it.


The real question is, do you want to spend 5, 10, 15, or 25k on the repaint?
