914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Nuts and Bolts

Posted by: Chaznaster Jan 3 2021, 06:54 PM

Hi All. As we dig deeper into our 914, we are finding a random assortment of nuts and bolts that I expect were incorporated into the car over the years. While I am not trying to source original hardware, I’d like to swap the odd ones out to be at more consistent (and, of course replacing any trashed/ rounded over/ damaged ones). Buying one or two at a time is going to get expensive and I cannot find a good reference for the right grade to use anyway (5.8, 8.8, 10.9, 12.9).
Is there a short list of the most common hardware found on our cars that I could use to start a collection of new ones?
Thank You!

Short answer is no list is available.

First, save all the old hardware, it can be refinished.
Use Porsche PET, I like this one -https://nemigaparts.com/cat_spares/pet/porsche/914/570u/
to get the correct sizes.
IIRC, some of the bolts that hold the front suspension to the car are grade 10 and the rest is grade 8 but I could be making that up.
Belmetric is a great source to order a couple or a whole bunch.

When I worked at the Porsche shop, we just ordered a box of every size nut and bolt from Wurth but that only makes sense if you are doing a bunch of cars. Better to just order what you need from Belmetric. They are very reasonable priced for hardware but you want to try to group your orders or shipping adds up quickly.

There happens to be a supplier of metric hardware in my town (Metric Specialties) and I would take the old nut/bolt/etc. to them and see if they had it. I also found that a small, local hardware store (in my case a True Value) would often have what I needed. Lastly, the Lowes near me seems to have a better selection of metric stuff than the Home Depot.

Auto Atlanta has or had a kit with a list of some sort on fasteners.

I have the kit. It’s mostly interior fasteners.

I used the kit as well and agree although definitely helpful in my case as I stripped my car too bare metal inside and out not the undercarriage.

I bought a kit many years ago with lots of DIN-spec nuts, bolts, and washers. (Note that generic "metric" may be JIS, which uses different wrench sizes for many of the fasteners than DIN does!!) Came in a blue metal case with compartments for the different fasteners. I would stop over to the local metric supply place (who hasn't done in-store sales in a very long time now) to get lots of extras of items I ran low on.

The most common fasteners in our cars are M6 and M8. Those are the 10mm and 13mm wrench ones. (JIS uses 12mm for M8 fasteners!) Almost everything seems to have a wavy washer on it as well. And there are a bunch of different lengths of each used.

I wound up getting boxes of 100 each of a bunch of them. Still have a good bit of them but can't find them now. Three moves will do that to a fella.

I just happened to place an order with Belmetric, This isn't every nut bolt and screw. It is about every m5, 6, 8,10, and 12 except the engines hardware. I also have 3 German cars so there is few spares. I'm buying steel cabinets with plastic divided boxes from Bolt depot. My attempt to have an ACE hardware in my garage, plus the hardware will be the right color. I hope to cut back on my weekly runs to ACE and returning with a tiny bag of hardware that I spent $20 on.

^^^ Thanks for that list, that's awesome. I typically try to re-use original fasteners unless too mangled or ugly. I've bought several of those kits from AASE Sales and Pegasus and then supplement/restock as needed but it can really add to timeframes and frustrations when you fall short on bits. The washers in particular get thrashed or lost easily and are not corner hardware store stuff.

Posted by: Chaznaster Jan 4 2021, 07:51 PM

Wow! That long list is amazing! And the final price is great, considering how much was ordered.
Thanks to everyone for the recommendations. It looks like I am headed to Belmetric for a shopping spree.
I will always try to use the original except when it is obvious it has been changed. Will keep and refinish wherever I can.
Thanks all!!

Sounds like a good plan. I went the re-plate and replace with original (new and used) route and would not be surprised if it cost 10x and took months to execute.

I am ordering that list for our next build smile.gif. Thanks!

Belmetric is amazing. Fed-ex just dropped a small heavy package. Free two day shipping. My daughters are asking me, dad did you just buy the metric hardware section of Ace?

Just adding my 2-cents to the thread....

I purchased the Auto-Atlanta kit and talk a bit about it on my build thread (http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=88955&st=840). If I remember correctly, 914Rubber.com was looking at producing an entire kit.

..... Maybe if enough of us bug them, we can get something! shades.gif

I just learned there is a place called Belmetric. This may have saved me years of my life zipping around town trying to find things, and I think I can afford my kids college tuition now.

Thank you 914world!

Death to the cheeseheads !! I replaced every one on my engine including all the warm air guides with SS socket head screws. Bought a box from McMaster Carr & never looked back biggrin.gif

We are actually putting together area specific kits now. Finish is chromate just like factory. Yellow zinc looks pretty for awhile but zinc is a sacrificial anode. It will not stay pretty.

If you notice many original fasteners still look good when you take them off.

More to follow.

Thanks @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=23951 for this great shopping list. Super helpful. I'd add M8 schnorr washers for the CV bolts (16...but since you need to replace at least 8 of them every time you drop the engine, I'd get 50).

Yup, Belmetric and also McMaster.

Rich,

I recently bought some of those nuts as they are used to seal the oil pump
I went to a VW bug shop on line and bought them

I put this list into a CSV file, which can be used on Belmetric's Quick Order page. You can edit the file, or it is probably easier to edit after it's been uploaded.
The Belmetric upload function is pretty hapless, if you make changes to the file that don't fit it's narrow requirements it will often just fail without any message.

That's awesome!
