914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Head nuts

It looks like the 4 cyl. head nuts are NLA from Porsche. The PET lists them as M10. Can I use M10 nuts from the local hardware store?

Thanks!
Konrad

No, if you were closer I'd send you a set.
Used T4 head nuts are reusable.

ARP used to make a set.

Thats interesting.
Why can't you use regular m10 nuts for the cylinder heads?

The M10 nuts for the heads are 15mm heads, and thicker. The ones at your local hardware store are going to be 17mm heads, and won't allow you to put a socket on them in the recesses in the cylinder heads.

There are plenty of spares out there. Just hit up a VW wrecking yard with a screwdriver and a 15mm socket.

I have a bunch of new ones that I had zinc plated. PM me if you want some.

They are 10mm tall.

Are hardened nuts needs for head studs?

Yes, finding the exact specification of hardness is not easy to find.

Hardware that has a part number that starts with N in the PET, you can use non VW parts. Other things like head nuts have a specific part number. You can find them still searching for "021 101 457."

The 914 PET doesn't list them but it's in the VW bus Parts book I have.

This place appears to have them new.

The washers are still available from Porsche. You would think that they are some special heat-treated part or something, but the same part number pops up all over, including in the suspension.

Most suspension washers are heat treated as well.

Yea, I noticed some of the suspension lots are grade 10 instead of the usual grade 8
