914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Official 2021 WCR in San Luis Obispo, Oct. 14-17

Update 13-Oct-2021:
The Alisal Fire in Santa Barbara County should not impact either of our drives, since we won't be any further south than Los Olivos on Saturday. In fact, I ran the optional Aliso Canyon and Harris Grade portions of the Saturday run yesterday evening and did not experience any smoke. Hopefully, it stays that way throughout the weekend.

Also, I uploaded the turn sheets for both drives a few minutes ago in post #197, which also shows approximate times at waypoints for those folks who are joining us late. I'll provide printouts of the turn sheets in the SWAG bags.

I approved the t-shirt mock-up about an hour ago -- they look GREAT! I'll stuff them into the SWAG bags in time for WCR check-in at the Quality Inn Suites tomorrow beginning at 2PM and ending at 4PM.

Due to timing, we will not gather at Cloisters Park at the outset of the Friday run as originally planned. I'm hoping Mark Whitesell will bring his drone so that we can take a car/group photo alongside the dinosaurs in Huasna on Saturday; otherwise, it'll need to be folks snapping iPhone photos from atop the nearby hill.

Finally, I have informally reserved the outside patio at Beda's Biergarten beginning at 4:30PM on Thursday. The address is 3230 Broad Street in SLO. Come join me for some of my favorite German food and a glass of bier, prior to heading out at 6PM to watch the sunset at Morro Rock in Morro Bay.

Previous Updates:

Alright, "registration" is officially open! I put it in quotes because I am not charging a fee this year, since I know that hotel costs are crazy-high in this beautiful part of the country and mostly everything will be a la carte (more details below). PM me thru this website, and include your real name and the screen/real names of your guests. I'll update the attendee list every day or two.

Upfront, I want to thank the incredible vendors that support our Porsche 914 addiction and provide such great service to us. In anticipation of this year's WCR event, I have talked with many of them, and their support for WCR 2021 is pouring in. As additional commitments are made, I'll update the list. The donated items will be raffled off during the Saturday evening awards dinner at Woodstock's in downtown SLO; winners must be present to accept prizes. If you are willing to contribute something (hint: I'm looking for someone to make People's Choice trophies!), please PM me. Below is the current list in alphabetic order:

Official T-Shirt Ordering Link

Click on the http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=355950 to order t-shirts! Registrants whose orders are received by October 7th will be provided their t-shirt(s) during registration on October 14th; all others must choose the direct shipping option.

WCR 2021 Sponsors List:

https://914rubber.com - SWAG bags & various 914 items
https://914werke.com/ - muffler hanger, tuna can, throttle cable mount, tow hooks, etc.
Bruce Stone - refurbished pedals set
BuddyV - posters of WCR 2021 logo
https://www.pmbperformance.com - refurbished caliper set
https://www.pokrajacautomotive.com - discounted dyno runs
https://www.spokeworksled.com - two sets of LED taillights
strawman - WCR 2021 logo artwork, local wine for "Best Of" prizes
914SIXXation - vintage 914 pillow
https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/porsche - $25 gift certificate, magnets, etc.

Below is the final draft logo for this WCR 2021 that I worked with a local graphics artist to develop. I will start a separate posting to order shirts from a reliable local vendor whose shop is a few doors down from my office and we've used him for a lot of past orders. I'll add a link to this posting here once that link is up. A range of options will be provided (color of shirt, long- or short-sleeve, women's/men's, hoodie, etc.), and ordering will be done through a third-party vendor. The shirts will be distributed during registration on Thursday October 14th.

Due to COVID-19, the only "official" gathering will be at Woodstock's Pizza on Saturday October 16 at 6PM in downtown SLO. Everyone will be responsible for ordering and paying for your own meals/drinks. The same is true for meals during the Friday and Saturday drives -- you're on your own to set up small groups to chow down for lunch in Cambria (Friday), and lunch in Los Olivos (Saturday).

The SLO Trolley is currently suspended due to a lack of bus drivers, so there's no free shuttle between the host hotel and Woodstock's on Saturday evening. You can choose to make the (pleasant) walk to Woodstock's from the host hotel, Uber, or park downtown. There's three parking garages within a few blocks, and plenty of curbside parking nearby in the vibrant SLO downtown area -- but please drive safely/sober if you choose to drive.

In mid-September, the SLO County Public Health Officer decreed that face masks must be worn indoors due to the COVID-19 Delta variant, and I ask that you respectfully comply. Obviously, when you're eating/drinking, mask wearing is not possible and I am certain that enforcement is relatively lax. But I don't want our Porsche 914 community to be labeled "those guys" for raising an unnecessary ruckus.

During registration, you'll be provided your shirt (if you ordered one!), the final itinerary of events, print-outs of the drives on Friday and Saturday, ballots for People's Choice Awards (longest drive, best original, best modified, etc.), raffle tickets, as well as maps to get to the Dyno Day and other events that we can (safely) put together. I'm thinking a Thursday night sunset picture opportunity near Morro Rock, followed up with small-group gatherings to eat dinner in Morro Bay / Cayucos... but I'm open to other ideas (PM me!).

The car show will officially kick off in the Quality Suites Inn parking lot following the Saturday drive. I'll be there to collect the ballots, which we will tally up prior to meeting at Woodstock's later that evening.

I will continue to maintain this posting #1 as the singular place for details, so please subscribe and check back often.

Update on 27-Aug-2021:

I have run a few great Central Coast drives over the past few weekends, and I believe we've got 'em locked in now. I'm also working with a great local artist to design a cool t-shirt, and will start a separate thread once it's ready for debut. I haven't yet figured out the registration fee that will include the t-shirt, but will update this thread as soon as I can nail it down. Stay tuned!

We'll do a Thursday evening drive for the early check-ins to the Morro Rock to watch the sunset, snap a few pics, and catch up. Those who are up for it can join me for dinner at Beda's Biergarten for some authentic German food and cold beer.

Friday morning will start at 9:14AM in the Quality Inn parking lot, with a re-group at Cloisters Community Park in Morro Bay. Then we'll head up the Coast and then over the mountains to Paso Robles Wine Country for some scenic and twisty roads. Next it's back to the Coast to to see some unique Coastal Vistas and have lunch in Cambria in small groups. Later that afternoon, we'll head over to watch those who signed up (details coming soon!) for dyno pulls.

Saturday morning will be another 9:14AM start, and we'll head along the south Coast (after a diversion to a unique SLO picture-taking opportunity!) and head for the twisty roads in the North Santa Barbara County Wine Country. We'll head back to the Quality Inn parking lot to display our cars and collect ballots for People's Choice / Best of Show.

The awards banquet will take place at 6:00PM at https://woodstocksslo.com/, which is located relatively close to the Quality Suites. Click on the link to see their menu. It'll be No-Host, so you're responsible for buying your own grub and beer. But I can vouge for it all; it is a go-to for me when I'm in downtown SLO.

There are a lot of great drives into and out of SLO County, so I'll send those details to registrants so that you can group up and have mini-rallies before/after the WCR.

Original 18-Feb-2021 Posting:

Hi All --

I will continue to edit/update this posting as details are nailed down, but we've finalized the dates and location for the 2021 West Coast Ramble: the WCR will be held October 14-17, 2021 in San Luis Obispo. Ink it into your calendar!

The "host" hotel is the Quality Suites Downtown San Luis Obispo. While this place ain't cheap, it is clean, safe and within walking distance of lots of food and entertainment venues. Call them at (805) 242-0269 and ask for Angela -- she is the only one that can give you the group rate. When you book at the Quality Suites make sure to ask for the "914WORLD Group Block Rate." The 3-day total is $747.63. We may see a slight discount on this rate as we get closer to our rally as per hotel staff (I am presuming they'll credit the cost; stay tuned).

Presuming the COVID-19 pandemic is not going to re-rear its ugly head again this fall, there is a free Downtown Trolley that operates Thursday through Saturday nights, with a bus stop out front of the Quality Suites.

Check out Woodstock Pizza for the Sat night awards dinner. If we get a hotel on Monterey it’s a easy 10 min walk. Not a whole lot of places downtown that can fit our group.

Posted by: strawman Feb 18 2021, 08:03 PM

Update: 2/18/2021 -- I met with the hotel managers at The Kinney Hotel, Quality Inn Hotel, and Lamplighter Motel (across from Quality Inn) today, and all said the weekend of October 14-17 works for them. I'm expecting a call back from each company's event coordinator within the next week. I expect the Lamplighter cost/night to represent lower-cost alternatives to the eventual host hotel that are located along Monterey Street within walking distance. There are also several boutique inns for those whose significant other wears the pants among us slap.gif

The Kinney has banquet rooms on-site for 40 diners in the large room and another 20 in the room nearby (separated by the full service bar). Not ideal, since we'd be separated for the awards presentation, or would have to crowd into the larger room (has a non-COVID capacity of 94 persons). We could also go to Woodstock's Pizza about 0.9 miles away, or try to get a banquet room at Central Coast Brewery (3 mi away) or at SLO Brew Rock (~4 mi near the SLO Airport). Another option is the renting the nearby Monday Club and bringing in catering, but that'll be $$$. I'll check in with those places in the next week and provide an update.

I stopped by SGS Independent Porsche Autocare about a possible tech session (Corner-balancing a 914? The PPI process? or ??), and Nathan and Guy are open to it. Guy's active in our local PCA autocross events, and he committed to chatting more about it with me. I scheduled a corner-balance and alignment of my Beast for March 4th while I was there. biggrin.gif

I also stopped by Pokrajac Automotive to talk with Mike, the guy that built and tuned my Beast's Subaru engine. He's willing to do a dyno day -- $100 per car for 3 pulls with printouts, if we can guarantee 10 cars. It takes about 30 minutes per car from the time it drives up onto the Mustang Dyno until the next one can drive up -- so it'd need to be a choreographed event and each car would need to be ready to go (no big oil drips, tires aired-up, safely tuned, etc.). Maybe Thursday afternoon/early-evening? If you're interested in that, reply to this thread and I'll add a separate list at the top of this thread.

I'm meeting with four of my 24 Hours of Lemons teammates tomorrow for lunch, and I plan to recruit them to help plan the drives and possibly provide road support during the drives. Aaron owns a 1974 914 with a 1.8, although he's wrapping up the hotrod/rebuild of a 2.7 sixer to up the ante. I'm sure I can finally get him to join 914World since he'll be helping me host this event... blink.gif

One more thing: if you look at Google Earth views of the hotels along Monterey Street, you'll see that The Kinney has the most parking space for our cars and a few trailers. The Veterans Center is within rock-throwing distance, with plenty of long-vehicle/combo curbside parking along Palm and Mill Streets. Again, I've got an acre in nearby Los Osos with a full-service shop -- so that's another possibility for staging tow rigs.

Posted by: Retroracer Feb 18 2021, 08:16 PM

Hey Geoff - I'd be up for seeing how much my car weighs (maybe at SGS?) - if they need a volunteer vehicle to show how their scales work..!

And, I'd be up for a dyno pull for giggles and grins. Although getting some of the V8 boys on deck might be more entertaining (I'm talking to you @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=19241 ..!).

Looking forward to it already....

Hopefully the trolley to downtown will be running by next October, The Kinney is a good choice. I have a call into Quality Suites. I spoke with the events manager today to try to get there price drastically decreased. The Quality Suites includes breakfast, happy hour includes free beer, wine but price may be a deal breaker. She will get back with me tomorrow.

FYI
The Lamplighter is a dump.

@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=16100 - Tony, I have access to a set of scales, if you don't want to wait to weigh your car. If you're interested, let me know and we can work out a time for you to come up.
And given I have numbers from the engine dyno, it'd be interesting to see what I'm getting to the wheels. I'm in!

Another suggestion for Sat night dinner, keep it within walking distance of our hotel.
SLO has City Police, County Sheriff and CHP offices all within the city. There always patrolling for that DUI college student. If the trolley is running its even better.

Good call. The SLO Downtown Trolley is still suspended due to the pandemic, so the banquet within walking distance is a great idea to avoid drinking/driving. I'll do some checking on venues nearby.

Thanks also for reaching out to your contacts at the Quality Inn Suites. The manager I spoke with (Bruce) is a former 914 owner, and he said he'd love to see a bunch of 'em at his site. Also said something about how 914 guys are always nicer than "the hotrod Roadster guys" that come in May each year...

One thing I found when dealing with event managers, the deal they offered was worse than what could be had with other ‘general’ discounts like military, senior, AAA, etc.

Check those too and if they offer less, nudge them in the right direction. evilgrin.gif

Be prepared for a date change. Either one week earlier or one week later. Reason is the week we chose is parent week for the SLO college students. The good news we will get a better hotel rate with a savings of $70.00 dollars and all the restaurants will not be as packed.

More info to come.

Good call on the reschedule. My wife and I unknowingly ended up in SLO on parents weekend in 2019. No parking, full restaurants. I agree that we move the event.

Quick update: Cal Poly still has not announced the dates for Parents Week on campus, although Quality Inn is assuming it is either the October 8-9 weekend or the October 15-16 weekend based on their pricing and discussions with the local manager.

I reached out to the Director of Parking & Transportation on campus (she has a hopped-up Speedster replica!) a couple of weeks ago, and she heard back today that the dates still have not been nailed down and likely won't be until early summer.

For that reason, I am changing the WCR dates to one week later (October 21-24). The hotel prices shown on the Quality Inn website are indeed 20-30% lower that weekend.

We'll be there smilie_pokal.gif

Hotels are gonna be fun though huh.gif We have one at Cal Poly and another in the wings. Rooms are always a challenge. biggrin.gif

This is going to be an EPIC WCR. SLO is Cali at it's finest.

Posted by: strawman Mar 26 2021, 05:53 PM

And the whipsaw continues... I just heard from my contact at the Cal Poly campus that they've moved the Parents Weekend from October 16th to October 23rd. The good news is that my alma mater (UC Davis) is playing Cal Poly in football that night, and it'll likely be another Aggies slaughter over the Mustangs. The bad news is that it'll jack up hotel room prices if we keep our WCR on that weekend.

I just met with the assistant manager at Quality Inn to see if they'll adjust their room rates back down for the previous weekend and he's checking into it. Still waiting to hear back, but we might need to revert back to October 14-17. Stay tuned...

It’s peak tourist season for the Gold Coast. SLO is always $$$ you won’t be disappointed. Quality Suites hits all the marks.

# Safe & Secure
# Free Happy Hour Beer & Wine.
# 5 min walk to Downtown
# Large two room suites that can easily be shared by two people

Just wondering on next steps:

1. Should we all be booking our room now via the hotel's website, or is one of the organizers getting a group rate for us (or something like that)?
2. What is the recommended hotel check-in and check-out dates. Or the better question is probably - what time on Oct 14 is the first event, and what time on Oct 17 is the last event?

Thanks, and look forward to meeting everyone!!

I just called them and got 3 different rates from 3 different people. I will nail this down on Monday. Best I got so far for a king bed with AAA rate for Thursday and Saturday is 193.00 per night. It’s Saturday night which is a killer, 322.00.
These rates included taxes. They do come with a separate room with a fold out couch.

Expedia rate is just as high.

HOTEL GROUP RATE HOTEL GROUP RATE HOTEL GROUP RATE HOTEL GROUP RATE

Quality Suites SLO.......(805) 242-0269. You have to ask for Angelia she is the only one that can give you the group rate. confused24.gif

When you book at the Quality Suites make sure to ask for the 914 World Group Block Rate. Three day out the door cost is $ 747.63. We may see a slight discount on this rate as we get closer to our rally as per hotel staff.

Unfortunately the hotel will only hold 20 rooms at this rate after that booking via AAA will see a slight increase.

Please note each room has a separate living area with a fold out couch, if you want to double, triple up...... grouphug.gif

We are making this the host hotel, there are several others within very close walking distance but you won’t save much and the Quality Suites hotel parking lot privacy is xlint.

Booked my room just now. Apparently you do have to go through the right person. The gentleman that helped me couldn’t find the group rate, but I got a room anyways. $879.57 with taxes. I’ll try getting ahold of Angelia to see if I can get the reduced rate. Any chance there is a group confirmation #? That may help.

Either way looking forward to this trip. Beautiful area and should be a great time.

I was actually looking at VRBO. There were a few houses that penciled out nicely, but did prefer to stick with the group. And yes that was $880x2

Angelina got us booked at 750 for the duration...unless there's a VRBO that sleeps 20. Now it's just the small matter of finishing the car. I was told last weekend that my wiring should only take about 12 hours or so, so I should be good... lol-2.gif av-943.gif

There are several hotels that are very close “5 minute walk” to this one that members can choose from. They are maybe 50.00 per night cheaper. Admin decided on this hotel due to size, SLO hotels are small and would not have fit our group.

There are a few smaller options a block away at ~$150/night. It's not the cheap season.

If I can't split a room at Quality then I'll be looking to cut a few hundy from the trip cost, specially if gas keeps going up.

Looking forward to the WCR! I am continuing to get my car to the next level (in my opinion). Just did the full Spoke's LED package and love it. Also just pulled the door cards off and replaced all of the clips and the receivers (thank you 914 Rubber) that actually go into the door and accept the clips. Then got all the clips and screws secured. Door cards look terrific now. Tomorrow it goes in to get the tailpipe sniffed to see if it is running rich or not -smells rich to me- and more importantly smells rich to my wife (yeah). unsure.gif

Presuming the COVID-19 pandemic is not going to re-rear its ugly head again this fall, there is a free Downtown Trolley that operates Thursday through Saturday nights, with a bus stop out front of the Quality Suites.

I'm still working on assembling a team and finalizing other details, so please subscribe to this thread if you're interested in participating. Cheers!

Geoff

UPDATE MAY 3, 2021 (thanks Greg @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=19195

):

We have hotel group block rate!!! Call Quality Suites SLO at (805) 242-0269 and ask for Angela -- she is the only one that can give you the group rate. When you book at the Quality Suites make sure to ask for the "914WORLD Group Block Rate." The 3-day total is $747.63. We may see a slight discount on this rate as we get closer to our rally as per hotel staff (I am presuming they'll credit the cost; stay tuned).

Greg has also booked a group room on Saturday at 6PM at https://woodstocksslo.com/, which is located relatively close to the Quality Suites. Click on the link to see their menu. It'll be No-Host, so you're responsible for buying your own grub and beer. But I can vouge for it all; it is a go-to for me when I'm in downtown SLO.

Hi Greg and Geoff,

I haven't been onto the 914World site since January and suddenly brain fog cleared and I was wondering if there was a WCR going on this year. Sure enough, there is and thanks to you guys for putting it together and working out all of the logistics!

This year has been tough for everyone and I hope everyone is continuing to get through the COVID mess. It was unfortunate that we couldn't attend last year as it sounded like a fun time. (Paul had some successful heart surgery).

We've only attended one WCR (2019) and we had so much fun we vowed we would try to make each one. Unfortunately, due to additional medical issues and complications, it is highly unlikely that Paul will be able to make it. (Maybe I can get him to a single day event in the future?)

I'm presently planning on coming (depending upon Paul's situation).

I received a call back from Angela (very nice, courteous professional lady) from Quality Inn and was able to grab a room from the 914World Group Block (others still available) with a 3 day price of $750.93 includes tax). Looks like a great place. Unfortunately hotel rates ALL over the country have inflated since the Pandemic.

As the WCR time nears, I hoping to try to arrange to meet up with the Orange Cty/LA group and caravan up together if possible.

So, really looking forward to seeing all of you and meeting even more new 914ers!

Please CONTINUE to be careful and STAY SAFE!

Cheers,
Margie

Thanks so much for your kind greetings. It was fun chatting and seeing some 914ers at Oscars working on Jeffrey's car. That seems so long ago.....

Hope everything works out for the WCR and possibly another day drive/meet up before then.

I've registered for the Werks Reunion Corral Parking and glad to see that they are recognizing the 914. Hope everything falls into place for that event too.

I see there has been alot of input regarding the Hotel and some of the drives and dinning, but I think the plans are yet undetermined. If the organizers need an extra-hand, happy to throw my hat in; Shirts, Trophies, etc..

Is there an attendees list yet? Excited about this event! bye1.gif

Hearst Castle is currently closed for road repair. Having driven that road for 30+ years, and knowing what was needed to repair it in 2019 when I retired, it won't be reopened in time for this event.

Were heading down with a motorhome with 914 in tow.
Redwood City, then Halfmoon Bay, then Morro Strand Beach and then SLO.

Just got the 914 on the road and took it to sportscar races at Laguna Seca last weekend, we go and camp each year. It was fun to have it to tool around the track/camping area and to run into Monterey with. But I have a lot of loose ends to tie up before WCR.

Crap. It is looking like we won't be able to make it this year. Just bought a new place (to us) up in Auburn, closing on 9/29. smile.gif I have a bit of work to do before we can move in and I just can't take a weekend out of the calendar and hit my schedule. I am bummed. sad.gif

What is the count on the dyno runs? I'm interested to see what my car can do. I've suspected that it's not completely stock. Output would tell.

I've only had one other attendee (besides you and me!) indicate interest so far... so I'll start an official sign-up thread with a closing date for signing up to ensure we get the requisite ten participants in order to get the discounted rate of $100 per car.

Hello Jeffrey.....L96M Greg here....have you given any thought to the alternate route that avoids all of the traffic on the 101 near santa barbara and drops us into Nipomo? Sounded good to me....anything but traffic...ugh:( Please consider and let me know or let everyone know. We still have all of the Malibu fun and maybe even more fun on the new route. Thank you very much

I will be traveling from Orange County to WCR Friday morning Oct 15, starting early in the hope of connecting with the gangue on the Friday tour (approx noonish). Any-body wish to caravan with me?

Apologies for the hijack but I'm hoping someone coming up from the LA area might be able to help me by picking up a BMW trans in La Crescenta and bringing it to WCR:

If so, PM or call me on 925-708-5295

QUOTE(strawman @ Feb 18 2021, 03:15 PM) *

WCR 2021 Sponsors List:

https://914rubber.com - SWAG bags & various 914 items
https://914werke.com/ - various 914 items
Bruce Stone - refurbished pedals set
BuddyV - posters of WCR 2021 logo
https://www.pmbperformance.com - refurbished caliper set
https://www.pokrajacautomotive.com - discounted dyno runs
https://www.spokeworksled.com - two sets of LED taillights
strawman - WCR 2021 logo artwork

Below is the final draft logo for this WCR 2021 that I worked with a local graphics artist to develop. I will start a separate posting to order shirts from a reliable local vendor whose shop is a few doors down from my office and we've used him for a lot of past orders. I'll add a link to this posting here once that link is up. A range of options will be provided (color of shirt, long- or short-sleeve, women's/men's, hoodie, etc.), and ordering will be done through a third-party vendor. The shirts will be distributed during registration on Thursday October 14th.

Attached Image

Hi Geoff,

I am SO bummed! I am not going to be able to make WCR with my 914-6. I have some work that is still being completed (refurbished fuel tank and stainless steel fuel lines, etc.).

So, I'm hoping it will be ok if I come in a non-Porsche. I will make sure that I am at the back and out of the photos when everyone is driving in your long row of awesome, beautiful, colorful 914s zooming along the many great roads you've planned.

I wil also park at the ends of rows when the cars are parked so as not to mess up any display of cars in parking lots. Gotta make sure those photos look great.

I'm going to PM you.

Thanks so much for all of your dedicated work to set up a wonderful West Coast Ramble!

I'm looking forward to seeing friends, meet new enthusiasts and look at all of those cool 914's!

(I am planning on meeting up with the Seal Beach/Malibu group early Thursday morning.)

See you soon.......

Cheers,
Margie

[IN THE CENTRAL CALIFORNIA AREA]
101 IS CLOSED FROM 0.3 MI SOUTH OF CARPINTERIA TO 0.3 MI NORTH OF GOLETTA /AT WINCHESTER CANYON RD/ (SANTA BARBARA CO) AT 1832 HRS ON 10/11/21 - DUE TO A WILDFIRE - MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO USE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE

Hi all,

I live in Santa Maria (without a 914) but would love to see the cars and folks maybe at an outdoor "cars and coffee" type setting. Will there be a time/location like that for that since I cannot fully participate?

Thanks

How does one get to SLO from the south with 101 closed? I-5 and head west north of the inferno? I had just read about the fire.

3 basic options available:

405N>101N>33N at Ventura >166W at Cayuma >101N at Santa Maria

So terrible to have another fire hit this area again. Sure hope that there isn't loss of homes and injuries and they can get it under control.

It will be a challenge with slower traffic on the alternate routes. We'll need to make sure we are all fueled up anticipating slow-moving traffic along the back roads where there aren't as many gas stations.

I'll be keeping an eye out on what the plans are for the group I'm joining coming from the Southern California/LA area. Staying at the Ayres in Seal Beach tomorrow night. Good Luck everybody! Looking forward to seeing you in SLO.

Cheers,
Margie

P.S. BTW, at the first and only WCR I attended in 2019 I gave one of my stuffy 914 TFA pillow cars as a door prize/ Addendees asked if I had any for sale. I did not.....no room in the 914. However, I touched base with Geoff to see if he thought it was ok to bring some. So, I WILL be bringing a lLIMITED number of them in Blue, Orange, Silver, and Yellow . They are NEW vintage 1977 collector items just freshly stuffed by me and are from my personal "stash." They have wheels that actually turn. Please PM me for pricing, and what color you want (first and second choice) and you can pick it up at SLO.

QUOTE(strawman @ Feb 18 2021, 01:15 PM) *

Update on 27-Aug-2021:
Saturday morning will be another 9:14AM start, and we'll head along the south Coast (after a diversion to a unique SLO picture-taking opportunity!) and head for the twisty roads in the North Santa Barbara County Wine Country. We'll head back to the Quality Inn parking lot to display our cars and collect ballots for People's Choice / Best of Show.

There are a lot of great drives into and out of SLO County, so I'll send those details to registrants so that you can group up and have mini-rallies before/after the WCR.

@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=8624 , 1 day before departure and a couple of questions:
Will the Sat. drive portion of the weekend be affected by the current Alisal Fire in Santa Barbara County?
Are you sending out any info on the drives in and out of SLO county? TIA

This is the 101 SB at Refugio on Monday late afternoon.

As of today (Wed) the 101 is still closed. Given winds are expected tonight, I would guess the 101 will be still closed Thursday morning. Unsure when it will reopen.

The 154 to the Santa Ynez Valley is open but with really heavy traffic.

I still suggest north on the 33 from Ventura to west on the 166 to north on the 101. It's a wonderful curvy road out of Ojai. Not sure of what the traffic situation will be. And be sure you start with a full tank of gas. The last stop with gas for certain is on the 33 in Ojai.

How does one get to SLO from the south with 101 closed? I-5 and head west north of the inferno? I had just read about the fire.

3 basic options available:
405N>101N>154N at Santa Barbara >101N
405N>101N>33N at Ventura >166W at Cayuma >101N at Santa Maria
5N past the Grapevine >166W>101N at Santa Maria

@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=9062

I like option #2 based on the below fire map.

1N>101N>33N at Ventura >166W at Cayuma >101N at Santa Maria

I believe the 154 is a non-starter as it is too close to the 101 and will bring heavy traffic. Other northbound travellers will opt for the 5 North.

This way we can still do breakfast at Paradise Cove, have a leisurely drive to Santa Maria over to SLO and steer clear of the fire.

Sounds like a great day to me ! driving.gif driving-girl.gif

agree.gif I don't like having to drive the extra hour out along 166, but it's a much safer route just incase the fire gets crazy and the winds change. See you in Malibu at 8. sunglasses.gif

Hi: I'm not sure I'm navigating this thread or Forum correctly but I hadn't heard back about the upcoming WCR in San Luis Obispo. I had asked to find out where the participants would be meeting on Saturday morning, October 16th. I am only able to do the drive that day. Would truly appreciate getting this information ASAP.

FYI: I am a freelance photojournalist in the automotive area and I would like to cover the drive portion on Saturday for CarGuyChronicles.com

Thanks so much.

Hello All.....if anyone has a couple cone screws could you please bring them for? I will gladly reimburse you. I have about 10 of them but darned if I know where I put them? My rear one was loose which explains why I was missing shifts. I tightened it up and back to beautiful but a new one would be better. How do they even get loose with that plastic nub stuck in them? Anyway thank you very much.

Here we are in Los Olivos and it is crazy busy/crowded!!! And our corral of cars is broken up. If anyone still wants to do the optional Harris Grade run, meet me at the intersection of Calkins Road and North Street (across on the north side of CA 154) at 2:00pm.

We got to see the new Bond movie as a private showing before its official release compliments of Stevens Creek Land Rover because we bought one of the new Defender 90.
The movie is 2h 45 min but was full of action and definitely worth seeing if you like Bond movies

Looks like a terrific event. beer.gif I am so sorry I missed it. But we bought a new place up in Auburn, sold our other place and I have been working like crazy to get the new one ready for us to move in.

To further complicate life, I am having a complete shoulder replacement on Monday the 25th, so I have to get as much done as possible as I will be useless for at least 2 months following surgery. Of course, according to my wife, I am already useless.... beerchug.gif

I hope your surgery goes well. I opted out of surgery on one of my shoulders this year. PT helped. Bicep Tendon tear. I was looking at 3 down months had I been cut on.

Happy to stop by and drive your 914!

But seriously, hope all goes well! And congratulations on the new pad!
