914World.com _ 914World Garage _ 914Rubber GB - 91455209712 YES the Roll bar!

Posted by: Mikey914 Feb 22 2021, 06:50 PM

So we have Rob's tread showing the prototype installed in his rig. I'm really quite happy how these turned out. We have quite a few folks that have stepped up to help support the cause and signed up on Rob's thread. Thought I should make it official and open a thread since someone has "let the cat out of the bag".

A little about the product and process
These are a self skinning rubber product that takes the texture off of the mold, so the tooling has the grain in it. This is how we make the dash tops. The big difference is that unlike the dash we were able to mold off of an original this one we had to scan and create a pattern that was cut into the tool. This is one of the reasons this tool has taken so long. There were quite a few problems we had to overcome, but we are ready to introduce the product now.

We are maybe 6 weeks out on the 1st parts shipping as we have materials inbound and it may take a bit to get it and schedule everything to move forward. Think Mid march and they will be shipping give or take a week.

The cost on these for the Group buy will be $128 until they start shipping, after and when in production they will be $148, The full retail will be $240 on these once the GB is done.

SO if you are interested sign up here !

I'm also putting together a "hardware kit" that will include new mounting screws that fit with a larger phillips head (making easier to remove later) and the new screw covers needed for $5.80 for those that need them (with the GB) no need to decide now.

From the other thread I have the following I will be notifying when ready. I do have some with question marks that I'm not sure if you are in but can send the info when ready.

I apologize for the dusty interior (and exterior). I keep the car in a warehouse year round under a cover. Somehow, it still, make that STILL gets dusty between visits. I’m still in search of that perfect cover I guess!
My part in this is simply that I started doing concour events in addition to SCCA and other speed related events (my PCA region doesn’t Autocross). In the early days of 914Rubber, if you called them on the phone, you got Mark, you still sometimes do, but he has staff now. Mark started calling me when he’d fly in to Reno and we’d get together and go to dinner. On virtually every phone call and every in person contact, I’d ask about progress on the targa bar pad. Poor Mark. I must have been such a pain in the ass. I can’t believe the trouble he’s gone through to get this done and get it right. He deserves every bit of our loyalty.
He is selling this too cheap. I strongly suggest you get your name on this list before his wife finds out. evilgrin.gif
P.S. I just started bugging him about the knee pad. You should have heard him groan! av-943.gif

Hate to Jinx it, but I've been told the production date for the raw materials is going to be next week sometime. I was told it could be 2-3 weeks from when I place the order.

This could put my production as much as 2 weeks ahead piratenanner.gif piratenanner.gif piratenanner.gif piratenanner.gif

Thanks for checking, Yes you are on "the list" as the thread is how I keep track just a +1 in the thread or count me in for gets you the PM with the discount code that will take the $240 full retail down to $128 for the GB. Once these start shipping The code will change to $148 still a deal but a little more.

I will also post on the thread when I send out the codes in large letters. I anticipate that I will be sending this out in about a week as the material will be inbound arriving about the 8th. We will be able to turn it around in less than a week after shipping out the 15th or maybe earlier beerchug.gif

I promised I'd put up pictures of the AA next to ours.
The new ones we got from AA do now have more pebble blasted finish and have improved from the 1st ones. I understand why AA didn't do the correct finish as it was expensive.

I do have 2 AA ones on the shelf and another coming back, and will honor the $99 on AA ones just PM me.

Same comment as others.

Hardware kit not available - Out of Stock.

It cannot be added to the cart to check out for the GB pricing. Is there a work around?

Thank you 914Rubber! We appreciate your great products and superb efforts making excellent parts.

Posted by: Mikey914 Mar 12 2021, 09:54 AM

Anyone else have this problem this morning? I just checked it looks to be working right now.
Try a different browser? May be the way the cookies are being handled?
I'm not really an IT guy but will have Blake look at it in an hour or so when he gets in.

Posted by: BeatNavy Mar 12 2021, 10:00 AM

Still not working for me. I tried both Chrome and Microsoft, signed in and signed out, and refreshed. I didn't delete cookies however.

No worries, I know you'll get it sorted beer.gif

Posted by: Mikey914 Mar 12 2021, 10:02 AM

Ok, we will get sorted out pretty shortly, good news is that it isn't stopping production.

Posted by: Wew Mar 12 2021, 10:35 AM

It worked for me last night.
Couple of tips like Mikey said clear your browser history and try again.
Also, try populating your cart through the two email links for each part.
When you put the bar in your cart, try applying the discount code then.
It worked for me.
Then add the hardware option through the link and go to checkout.
The discounts should show then.

Posted by: Mikey914 Mar 12 2021, 11:02 AM

We have to add stock in the ERP System. Our website is now "smarter" in that we haven't processed a work order to "build" the kits. As soon as Stephanine and Blake are back in we can rectify this. It's no longer as simple as increasing the quantity available on the website. Everything is connected. Good and bad. It's changing the way we do things, should be much more good than bad, but here is an example of us learning.

No worries, Mark. You just need to take 10 years and spend $50 million on consultants and they'll have that ERP running like a champ. Maybe.

Posted by: Mikey914 Mar 12 2021, 11:17 AM

We were fortunate to be included in a grant that the ERP company needed a launch customer for. We were a more complicated beast for them as we manufacture and sell in wholesale and retail levels, so we are not having to pay their engineers for "custom build outs". I do have Blake, Stephanine, Carr and Kate each working at bite sized pieces of the puzzle. We are still learning, but it is coming along nicely for the most part. It is however changing the way we do business as it is much more structured.

It will offer scalability once we have the full system in place.

Update on hardware
I have to take the blame for this but when the button caps were counted they counted many of the brown ones we made as black. IN the light of day the mistake was caught. I will need to order in more plastic to make these but it will not be ready in time to be included in the GB we had 60 sets they are gone.

I will offer up the same pricing later and we will have to figure out something, I'm sorry we dorked this up.

On a more positive note we did get 15 out today. Production is moving along fast so the wait time will not be very long on these.

Mark,

Is it too late to get in on the group buy on the targa bar? I need one plus hardware.

First, I had to clear cookies to get the cart to work. New stuff wouldn't actually add and couldn't delete the old stuff.

I'm not in a hurry for a new pad but I would like hardware like most of us. Any chance of adding hardware back as BO and then just shipping it all at once in a few weeks?

We are finding that they yield on material is not as good as it should have been and our costs are actually more, we will hold the price as advertised until the cut off, but after that we have to revise. The screw covers will be a delay as I need to bring in product and schedule time to do them.

I have sent out the codes to all so far if anyone is still having any issues please PM me.

We are in the home stretch on material for these and have realized the yield is not as good as we thought it would be. We are holding the price as we said we would until production is done. We will wrap these up om the 19th! So
Get them while they are literally hot!
Price increase after the 19th!

$148 reg $225

Will hold that ($148) til the end of the month

What's the trick to fitting the latch covers? I started trimming but ran into metal frame. It's about a 3.5mm difference in width compared to my original.

Posted by: yeahmag Mar 19 2021, 05:09 PM

I'm working through the same issue. I've used a dremel with a small cylindrical sander to clearance the rubber. I then used a drift and a chisel to move around the metal a bit.

Not sure if it’s just me, but I just can’t get this to look good and be secure.

I also struggled to get mine installed with the same fitment issue. I cut some of the cast rubber off of the "buried" metal with a 1/4" wood chisel, and filed metal off of the brackets that the two screws pass through to fit and hold this "slot" in place. Mine is a '72 so the slot's brackets are made of cast metal, not plastic like the later cars. The screws are now self threaded into the rubber - would have preferred into metal, but the metal stops short of the screw position. Not perfect, but looks better than the original seriously cracked and worn Targa edge cover.

Posted by: Mikey914 Mar 20 2021, 04:58 PM

I took a closer look at the production. It looks like the rubber grew slightly here. and the metal insert didn't seat exactly where we wanted it to. I'll be working on a "solution" tomorrow. The easiest may be to make new covers. We had planned to do these in metal and they would retrofit easily onto OEM. The odd thing is it you really look at the metal ones they splay out at the ends and are not a straight shot. This is why these are typically a tight fit.
More to follow.

Update-
We ran through all of our material to make these. That's the good part. Having a large production run where we can see exactly what the best yield is has also highlighted that our materials cost was off a bit. We have more material inbound now.

On another front we did get some growth in the pockets where the latch mechanisms are. We also have had the internal metal shift slightly. It makes getting the stock metal covers in a little more difficult. I'm not happy with this as you should not have to modify my product.

Good news is I have already started on the covers. The fix for this is for me to modify the cover design to make a cove that will fit perfectly and provide to those of you who have stepped up so far. I will halt the production on the next run (which is still at least 3 weeks out because of material) until I can see if the process can be changed to eliminate the undesired growth in the pockets, and metal issue, or to just provide with the new parts.

I will keep you posted, but will continue to work on this for the best solution.

Any updates on these or the hardware kits?

Posted by: Mikey914 Apr 19 2021, 11:41 PM

I will have hardware kits done shortly, and will be able to ship with roll bars. We are about ready to go to foundry on the improved latch covers. We were able to create a little more clearance and they will be retrofittable to stock. We plan to powder coat them which will add about a week. Also will have some other parts that we can make available for ya too. More on that this next week when we get them back from finishing!
The material for the next run will be here no later than end of the week, so gonna be a busy next few weeks. I'll post up all the details 4/26 with some pics and finalized time line. biggrin.gif

Posted by: bbrock Apr 20 2021, 07:54 AM

FYI - I was able to install mine after grinding out the latch openings to provide clearance for the stock latch covers (described in the other roll bar thread). Installing the pad was a bit of a challenge because the shrinkage was enough that the screw holes didn't align perfectly. After securing one end of the roll bar, I used a sturdy straight pick for leverage to stretch the pad to line up adjacent screw holes. I had to use 1-1/4" long screws (sourced from the hardware store) on some of the holes to be able to angle them through the pad holes and catch the hole on the roll bar. Then I could tighten the screw to pull and stretch the roll pad into alignment. There were times I didn't think it was going to work, but it did.

This is all to say that you might need an assortment of screw lengths on hand for the installation. It was a challenge to install, but the result looks way better than the old cracked pad.

where are we at with this? i have the part sitting in my garage, waiting.... i have decided i am not going to install it, not going to modify it to work. What i would like is to have it swapped out with the correctly fitting part, when that happens or if not returned for refund. Mark, please let us know if that is a possibility.

i appreciate the hard work and investment put in to making these, but it should have been tested for fit before being sent out.

Please send it back if you are not happy. The original prototype did fit, the area had a tight clearance and variation in the metal production and the foam grew under the higher pressure we wound up running these on. So we have opted to go 2 routes. We can print covers that you would have to paint, or the metal version is in the works it would be offered to any that want it for $20 but will retail at $60 a set and will be powder coated.

The foundry production can only go so fast. I have designed the new parts made prototypes and I'm currently having tooling made to make in aluminum.
By the way we are almost complete latch rebuild kit will be ready at the same time. We are working on it too as well.

Mark,
When is the next run for the roll bar pads? The one I received not only has the issues with the cover plates not fitting it also is deformed so the latch handle doesn’t return into the recess. I think I’m on the list to get a replacement.

Thanks,

The problem we ran into was the material inside the pocket grew in on some up to 1/16”. We are making new latch covers to allow for this. They are in process now.

We have completed another run of these and even with some adjustments it did grow some again.

We are holding off until we can provide all that need them with a replacement set. All future bars will just come with them.

Drop me some pics of the latch handle area. I suspect it may be a spring issue as the actual opening remains the same size.
So in a nutshell we will get you a solution unfortunately it takes awhile to make new parts. We redesigned the pats with changes to the bracket mounts that have been tested to fit and not interfere with the latches.
I’ll post up more as we get closer to having parts.

Posted by: Mikey914 Jun 27 2021, 03:28 PM

We have had problems in foundry making these. There are under cuts and splayed mounting tabs, but we think we finally have a solution. It will actually solve a few problems.
I'm working on prototyping these this week. If they work as planned will be working on the tooling to make them right after.

As far as the original price on the GB there were a few that asked while all of this is in progress that we will honor.

We also will be offering additional discounts on a few other items that are coming up for those that have supported us and believed in us to handle the issue.

We do have 2 other cool items that we all can use that you will get additional discounts on if you wish.

More this week

Any updates yet?
I don't want to remove my stock unit until all the parts are there to install the replacement correctly (and without having to modify/possibly damage anything).

IIRC we're waiting on a correct hardware kit (longer screws) and latch covers that fit.

Also do all the pads in the first run have the exact same fitment issues, or are their variants within the first run?

Posted by: Root_Werks Jul 9 2021, 11:40 AM

My original unit is toast. I'd take an early version that needs a modified trim piece.

I don't think it is possible to get a perfect fit with these first run roll bar pads, but with some carving and tweaking, I got it installed well enough that it is a significant improvement over the cracked original. Issues are that even after carving the latch cover openings so they drop in properly, the bar twists enough in the install that the covers bulge and, as was already mentioned, the latch levers won't retract into the recess properly. On mine I am able to just push them up to tuck them in, but it isn't how they should be. Here's the pic of my installed pad from this post in the other thread: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?s=&showtopic=352449&view=findpost&p=2924471 You can see the latch cover bowing up. With the roll bar off, the cover drops in and sits perfectly flush so this is due to some additional twisting/shrinking that occurred on the pad.

We are working on the covers still. Everyone that has bought a roll bar will be getting a new metal latch cover set. We are making some improvements on them too. It will resolve the issue and make it a better looking part.

It's been a painful process. Also there will be additional considerations I will contact all that have bought these as it progresses.

Having said that, it was a bit of a challenge to get it installed. Even after grinding the sides down with a dremel, I really couldn't get the latch covers installed very well. I'm looking forward to the 914Rubber version of those. I had one corner that fit well, and one that didn't fit as well for some reason. Unlike Brent, I was able to get the screws in on the forward portion of the pad without too much realignment. I used #6 x 1 inch sheet metal screws (longest #6 they had in stock at Lowes). I think I got all but one in ok. The underside were a different story (the ones that point up into the bar). I got one or two of those in and then gave up after a while.

Overall, it looks MUCH better than my old cracked one that was pretty much missing the corner. Version 2.0 should be much better, although it wasn't my intention to be on the "bleeding edge" of this product. The price was very reasonable, though, the texture is very close, and along with the new vinyl and side chrome pieces it all looks MUCH better than before -- more so when latch covers are available, I presume.

Thank you for sharing!

Like many, mine is also in the box. I am far away in my project from being ready to install it. rolleyes.gif

I am too very concerned by the wave in the currently "non" rectangular area. Mark told me once the part will be properly screwed on the car, it will straighten and set right, but from most of the current installed pictures I have seen, I can still see some deformation in that area.

I am staying hopeful and positive! smile.gif

Posted by: Mikey914 Sep 23 2021, 11:25 AM

Just trying to get production finished to get to finishing. Seems like these things take longer than planned. We have 2 attachment prongs that need to be attached and it’s taking some time there.

I’ll post an update as soon as they go to finishing.
Also will send out the email promised to those that have bought the roll bar too.

Thanks

Taking the weekend to drive to Montana to pick up another 914, otherwise I’d be working on it.

BTW, the one from AA fits perfectly. Straight seams & all the screw holes line up. The latch covers fit perfectly too. I guess you get what you pay for. Sorry Mickey.

You know, I wish you the very best. Let me suggest that you don't sell stuff that isn't ready for "prime time." You're making your life & that of others an unnecessary PITA. I remember when I was at Agilent (HP) as a senior manufacturing engineer & when we bought defective laser components from a company in Japan. Robin would have to sit in a conference room all day long with the vendor's representative to track the fix progress. This went on for several months until we shut down the vendor. It cost Agilent lots of bucks & trouble. Test it & get it right before you try to sell it. Good luck & stay well.

I find it much easier to support a man of good morals than one that has screwed over so many members or one that openly sells - under a pseudo name - "light weight racing fans" on eBay. Unlike "HP" Mark is a one man company and doesn't have the resources to produce spot on products the first go around. BTW, you made mention of how well the AA part fits but nary a word regarding the grain not matching up very well. shades.gif

Thanks guys,
I actually do try to get it right the 1st time. Sometimes issues pop up that are unexpected. Could I spend more time and money in the process, yes. We do try to be as lean as possible to offer you the best prices continuously.

Could I seek to be ISO certified, yes. But, it's a cost that has to be passed on. As you can see from my price point, and the very limited market, I have to seek a balance
Most of the time we get it right, when we don't we do the right thing. Pretty sure we took the part back and refunded the customer on this one already.

For the rest you all will be getting an email this next Thursday I think you will like.

Correct. I also replaced the pads on the sides which have a texture that matches the new top pad. The mismatch with the top vinyl is very second or third order to me. AA may be a little pricey, but the roll bar looks brand new now. Working with George has been a delight for sure. For sure for sure as the Valley Girls used to say.

Yes I would like one

Posted by: Mikey914 Oct 22 2021, 12:59 PM

As promised. We made these covers to be able to offer up a solution for those that were having issues. This way, when you go to install you have options. The profile we changed slightly so that the ends towards the outside of the car taper to fit the parts detent. This was something that bothered me on the original part.
I ran these at WCR. We made some pins to push into the part to help grip it, wound up adding a little butyl as one pin was slightly off and they can't go too deep as there is a metal lip about 3/16" under the top of the part.

Pretty happy with the result. Also much easier to access the latch.

I test fit these on an early car here so I could make sure that there was no variation with latches that could interfere. Note that the roll bar pad is NOT screwed in. I do think some deformation is due to mounting screws being over tightened.

You can distort the pad buy over tightening the screws. There is a metal substructure that can exert enough pressure to pucker the part when tightened down. It also makes them more difficult to remove.

It would be nice to see better pictures of the installed finished product with these new covers. I can't say I was really convinced by the ones shown on post #294 and #295. dry.gif

Also are all the screw holes lining up to the roll bar? if not which ones don't and what should be the best steps (screw sequence) to install the pad?

Thank you.

I apologize in advance if this is repetitive, I did not read through the thread. I was in on the first group buy and installed mine without too many issues. The problem I had was when I tried to install the latch cover, I broke mine trying to get them to fit. I was under the impression that new latch covers were going to be made to remedy this.
Has anybody heard anything about these?

By the way the roll bar pad looks great! All I need is a latch cover that will fit properly.

Cheers,
John

Latch covers are starting to go out tomorrow. Also check your email I think you will have a pleasant surprise.

We will be going through our inventory and sorting these out, but they will have to be fitted to check so the process will be longer. Right now we are prepping for Black Friday and will open these back up after we can check. We will be retooling to make these more consistent as well as adding some fixtures to make the process more production friendly, and consistent.

I also agree. I've spent my career as a quality assurance professional and even some of the best planned and executed design validations and process qualifications can sometimes result in unexpected issues that customer's end up dealing with. Even if there was an obvious misstep in manufacturing, at the end of the day, manufacturers/suppliers will be remembered by the level of integrity they use to manage the customer. Believe me, I've sent my fair share of apology emails and phone calls. Customer perception is critical! Well done Mark!! first.gif

Posted by: Mikey914 Dec 16 2021, 01:19 PM

Here's the timeline and whats going on.
We had issues with some rollbars having issues with the factory latches as the material in the pocket.

We had shipped most of them out, but after investigating the problem decided to halt shipment so we can check fits and modify any that need it.

In the meantime we had started pursuing a solution on making a new latch cover. Which took a few iterations and finally yielded what we made.
I was not happy with the solution as it wasn't as clean of an install as I would have liked.

We did start shipping out the latch kits I had made up. Kinzie thought that was all there was, but we have enough to get everyone that jas paid and more. The kits were to be made up and sent to all on the list that the roll bars had shipped. So there may be a few stragglers that should be out this week.

The roll bars that had not shipped are being checked and corrected and will start shipping out Monday.

As soon as we have all of our current customers covered we will open sales of these back up.

Hey Mark to be clear...(because Im not sure I am):
The pad you made was found not to accept the OE latch covers.
Rather than start over to correct the Pad, you opted to recreate new latch covers to fit the Pad you tooled up for.
Is that accurate?
Do you also have a latch cover that fits the OE Pad?
Is is this NEW latch cover supposed to do dbl duty (OE & your pad)?
Are there plans to correct that pad so it does match OE dimensions, or going forward if you need one of these (Roll bar pad's) it will be s kitted with the specific latch covers?

Posted by: mepstein Dec 20 2021, 06:40 PM

Yea, I’m still not clear if there’s a version 2.0 coming out.

Posted by: Mikey914 Dec 20 2021, 09:57 PM

Ok, let me try to clear this up.

We made the roll bar pads. In 2 runs.
1st run we were starting to see some growth in the pockets. We made adjustments to the metal on the second run that would keep the rubber from pushing into the pockets. This worked with limited results.

Decided to make latch covers to resolve this. They do work, but I’m not as happy with them as I still think there’s room for improvement there too.

So, we have sent out the latch covers.

We are in the process of going through each roll bar, cutting more than enough clearance so they (the OEM latch covers) can be easily mounted. There is a short list of folks that had held the last few of. Those are going out now, just slowly with the holiday.

EVERY roll bar that was purchased, and not returned will get a credit to spend. Some of the credits may not have been applied to roll bars that haven’t shipped. Those folks won the trifecta.

Will will rework the tool, but have the third component of this program occupying the equipment right now.

The credit can be used on the windshield upper bolster we are wrapping up now, or can be applied to the parts currently being tooled up.

I’ll let the cat out of the bag, it’s the windshield pillar pieces.

Lastly, the credit could be applied to “2nd gen “ version which will follow.

We are also in the process of getting the rebuild kits listed very shortly.

If I missed anyone, let me know

Mark you may be in the trifecta catagory. I will follow up.

Mark, I never heard back from you so this is my 2nd request. Just like Mark E., I ordered and received two roll bar pads, albeit w/o attachment screws, but to date have only received one set of covers. Also, how do we find the credit? TIA, Kent

Ok
Anyone who has paid for the roll bars PM me your emails and I will assure that the credits are processed. If you have not received yours include that too, This way I can check against my records and make sure no one is missed.

We are not set up to do this easily as it's not a process we normally do (mass refunds, with additional shipments), so it is possible we have a few hick-ups.
Mark

Just reviving this. Is there or will there be a new generation of these that fit better and uses the OEM latch covers?

Or are we still on the 2nd run of the 1st generation pads with replacement latch covers?

Or is this GB done and complete with no follow on work to be done?

The GB is over,
However we now check fit metal OEM latch covers on each roll bar pad. We cut the additional material out necessary to make it fit as it should. We do have in stock, but we have enough of these that we will be going through them cutting and test fitting each one.
