I’ll try my best to make this, at least for Wednesday-Thursday. Should be done with the 5-lug swap and new tires by then. I’ll persuade my brother to tag along with his 69 911.

The El Ray at $700+ with no cancellations and no refunds doesn't fit my reality...

...so looking at options I see Cottonwood Court Motel within walking distance and a bit nicer Lamplighter Inn a short drive.

Wow, I had to double check my reservation! $159 with 48 hour cancellation. Are you sure you got the right hotel? Regardless, plenty of options in Santa Fe, just don't get too close to the plaza for a decent price.

Flushed some dried coolant grit out of the passages and scored scaly-rust free steel bypass tubes at the PAP today, so I'm optimistic the cooling issue will be resolved. But then the cooling system is all new too. Last drive a week before got only a little high.
The vq35 swap will be practically starting from scratch, but I am taking measurements of the adapter plate while it's this far apart. Going to try to mate it to that WRX trans.

Booked the hotel for my wife and I back on April 23. Seeing the post about no cancellation made me concerned as they said you could cancel as long as it was 48 hours out when I made the reservation over the phone. I just double checked the email and it does say: "Reservations must be cancelled by 3pm local time, 24 hours or more prior to scheduled arrival to avoid a penalty of one night's room and tax. Penalty for early departure may also apply."

So that's really strange @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=431 that you aren't able to cancel your reservation.

No signs of a head gasket leak. Only 20k miles on the motor and they are the metal layer type so unlikely anyways.

Might still have been bleeding air out of the system. The Celica rad doesn't have the cool inline bleeder that the original Corrado rad did. @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=14748

Clearly, I misunderstood the original post, and booked in Santa Fe through Sunday.

For any late additions, please don't make the same mistake I did - Saturday night hotel is in Winslow, AZ!

Posted by: 914 Ranch May 12 2021, 11:47 AM

Just got off the phone with the hotel in Winslow and got my reservations straighten out. Now I'm all set to go Coast to Coast with stops for Ribs going to and from. Going to go see my Stepmother and sister while in Ca. See y'all on the 26th...

Posted by: 914_teener May 12 2021, 02:59 PM

Add 1 for dinner with me John if possible.

Sadly I can't make it to NM this trip. Finding a good contractor for remodling is difficult at best but I found a good electrical guy for the Prescott house, so I am stuck in Prescott on the 22nd to the 23rd and I'll meet ya'll in Winslow and try and make it to the Petrified Forrest and the drive into Winslow on Sat.

Bringing a P car which is different than most have here, and a really funny story about it. I'm gonna keep it mute for now. It's a good cocktail story.

So sorry I'm gonna miss Las Vegas NM. It is a really cool little town... my Dad grew up there and is truly the original Old West or Wild West town. The drive from Santa Fe is a taste of wide open expanse of Pinon (insert tilde) forrest you'll ever see. The Gorge Bridge is spectacular. A walk across is in order to fully experience it.

Looking forward to seeing old friends and hopefully some new ones.

Sadly I don't think this year is in the cards for me. Thought timing wise was good as I have a trade show in Vegas the following week. When I get down to it. Coming in Wednesday to join you guys. I'd end up being gone from home for 9 days. So I am 90% sure I am not going to make it. I'd try to make it & join you all Saturday. Just to damn far a drive from Vegas for a one day turn around. So just wanted to keep you all in the loop. While there is still an outside chance I make it for part of it. Odds are not looking good sad.gif

Like Jamie, I won't be able to make it this year either dry.gif ... Too many irons in the fire, and having a road-worthy 914 in time isn't on the main burner.

Maybe next year idea.gif

Kansas, Nebraska, or Texas for making up my eastwards travel. I think I want to skirt the Rockies, but that isn’t the true 66. Reservations are made. I really hope my back cooperates. Hey @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=1143

Not completely set each way, just trying to forecast out a few weeks. I unfortunately won't have my car ready, though the wiring is all but done after recently taking it to a mechanic, so I have to contemplate a fly-in/fly-out and rental car.

Posted by: Chris914n6 Jun 4 2021, 01:19 PM

Unfortunately reality kicked in. I have too much going on at the home front to be gone this long.

Have fun post lots of pics

Posted by: 76-914 Jun 7 2021, 10:09 PM

I was lucky today. I took Kugel in for an alignment and "Road Force wheel balancing" in preparation for Rt66. Rather than wait 2 hours I walked down to my favorite hardware store and killed a little time there. When I returned they told me that they couldn't balance the wheels because they were afraid they'd damage the center caps. I returned home and removed the center caps so I could drop off the wheels back off to them in the morning. When I removed the wheels I found the r front outer bearing was kaput. I replaced inner/outer & races. That would not have been a fun thing to do in AX or NM.

For those of you that are old enough....these molded "big guys" were made for advertisement purposes all over the mid-west and western US. You may remember them near a Phillips 66 station.....hence the story on R66.

Received the first parts of the trophies yesterday, very excited to show everyone!

Still trying to see if I can make it. Believe I have a route to fly-in and fly-out, just trying to figure out rental cars as opposed to driving. If anyone has a Turo / Rental contact in the area, it would be greatly appreciated. type.gif headbang.gif

We have a lot of ground to cover, wonderful places to visit and roadside attractions to check out.
We need the extra time if we are going to be able to travel on Route 66 when available, instead of all Intestate.
After three days in Santa Fe, I want to see more stuff.
It will be nice for everyone to explore La Posada and go Stand on the Corner in Winslow.

If anyone wants to leave later, you can easily catch up by lunch in Gallup.
Just skip the Turquoise Trail and stay on the main highway with all the semis.

Sometimes you run out of time and have to farm out the work.

I dropped the NARP off at Don Jackson Enterprises this morning so he can tune it and get it to pass emissions. If he has time, he'll clean up some of the nasty birds nest of wiring some previous owner inflicted on the car and then maybe he'll find time to wrap up the final details on the AC.

As long as he gets it to pass emissions, I'll be happy.

We will be leaving Phx early Thursday morning and will see you all some time later in the evening.

Thanks for the tip. Pretty much what my wife said on the phone. I got to Hugoton KS today, and am a bit ahead so far. Thank god i put in the tall gears. I copied your under the car oil cooler from your original build thread. So farso good. The geezer behind the wheel overheated some though.
Never saw such vast piles of food before in my life. Huge grain silos, huge cow silos, fields of wheat. Then there are oil wells, windmills and ethanol plants. This is one rich nation taken as a whole.
See you tomorrow, God willing. I have a sound that i think is an exhaust leak. Car is too hot to get near right now though. Wind is running about 30 knots, making steering kinda interesting. Found my side view mirror folded back, so i reset it. Next semi with a cow trailer on it blasted the thing flat against the door. Like closing with two dozen Escalades at 140 mph, and they have all their windows rolled down dragging wind. Regular trailers had no effect. I learned to swerve away as they approached. Like the Warren Zevon album, Learning to Flinch.

Just a heads up, we currently have over two dozen wild fires burning here in AZ. Below is the best site I've found to track highway closures. So far, you guys should be unaffected but keep an eye out and travel safe!

https://www.az511.com/

Thanks Michael. That site may save me from taking a really long detour. Several of the closures effect routes I am considering.

I am going up through Payson. I'm trying to decide if I want to head north on 377 to I40 or head east on 260, 61 and 53 through the Zuni nation. I've been across I40 several times in the past and I'm thinking a change of scenery could be fun but I am also nervous about being so far off the beaten path in a 50 year old car.

Posted by: 914_teener Jun 22 2021, 07:09 PM

I.m in Prescott...don.t know what day you are leaving....I.m leaving Friday. 1-17 then through Sedona to I.40. The roads through the Zuni Nation are pretty remote. You can PM me if you like.

So I'm cleaning the mud off the GT4 and keep hearing some noise coming from across the parking lot. It's time for a break and I go over to investigate and find out that there is a bar 60' from where I have been working. I go in and check it out and they have 7 different kinds of tequila I have never heard of.
I'm going back for a second shot.
The girl looks great oh and so does the bartender.

True! I was thinking of the crew coming from NM....not really people heading up from Phx. Travel safe!

Lunch in Gallup on Saturday will be a dine and dash affair. We hope to arrive after noon and be back on the road by 1:00.

Meet the caravan at the Route 66 Diner. It is near the cross street Boardman on Rt. 66, next to KFC.

Lunch will come from the collection of fast food chains, all in a row on this same block.

Good morning everyone. About an hour ago, I went to the El Rey Court and nobody was there other than the Cayman GT4. When is everyone arriving? I’m having lunch and then I’ll check back. Thank you!

The Las Vegas caravan has arrived.

We will be heading out @5 o'clock to drive to dinner in Vegas, NM.
I will post our chosen food location when we get there and figure it out, for those who want to join us later. Sharon and Betty.

I brought a white and orange 76, made up to look like a creamsicle. On jack stands at present till the welding is done. Some repairs to longitudinal box sections needed.

If I could put time in a bottle...think about this forming grain by grain, through all the seasons. My geologist friend would then tell me it was a recent formation - less than a billion years for sure.
Preview shows John’s neat desert picture just fine with all of the layers. But not when it gets added.

Yeah me too!!!!! Especially when it means I've got to pull an all-nighter dropping the engine, replacing the woodruff key that sheared off(because I did something stupid several months ago), fixing the clutch tube, and putting it all back together.

Time for a quick shower, a nap, and then we are hitting the road.

beerchug.gif Here's to you JP. A lot of work went into this and I want to thank you, John, and all those involved. That was just you John, right? av-943.gif Actually JP does better w/o our input. And, JP always creates classy shirts/hats for the Rt66 Events. beerchug.gif

Made it home last night. 2,300 miles, 40 hours seat time in 6 days.
We had a wonderful time meeting old and new friends.
Thank you JP for putting it together and picking great hotels and tours.

Ditto here. 2400 miles of driving bliss with the "usual suspects" and a few new faces as well. John put together one Great Event, again. Home Sweet Home looks good too. beerchug.gif

Another note of thanks to John for putting together a great event. Nathan and I had an awesome time. We enjoyed meeting all of you and offer our warmest thanks to everyone who helped get NARP started and on the road.

Thank you all so very much for making this a fantastic event.
I loved that people exercised the freedom to jump in / out as their schedules allowed.
We had 30 people and 20 cars. Half of the vehicles were 914's

Special thanks to @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=9478 for the Awards and @http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=16669 for the hats, shirts, bags and key fobs.

I haven't finished unpacking yet, but I am ready to do it again.
Next year we start at La Posada in Winslow.

You said it! Thanks John! This morning found me climbing to Monarch Pass over 11,000 feet very close to last night’s snow line. Covering some of the best driving in my life. Now I am in east central Nebraska. The car has been great to drive but after eight straight days I have had enough. Home should come tomorrow and then I probably won’t drive for a week!
Every single person i met during this event was kind and generous. How lucky I am. Thanks.

I want to thank John for this great trip and everyone that was there, you made it very special to me. I think that my buddie mark with his water-cooled Targa 4 AWD could keep up with Johns 3.0 914-6 in 115-degree heat. These where the most challenging twisty I have ever been on and the guys in the red Targa ( Me and Mark for the last 50 years) where raised on Mulholland for our jamming. Johns car was almost mounted by a Donkey as we saw the donkey sign. Incredible handling with these cars. Our car had no idea what we were going to experience and I am glade that Mark S had lots of hours with a teacher at Porsche experience in his car. I have video of the jamming but it is too big to get on here for me

Took a picture of the Pacific Ocean today on the way to lunch in Hermosa Beach. Unless something exciting happens on the way home the next picture will be when I get home.
