914World.com _ 914World Garage _ This is the inspiration for my car

Posted by: URY914 Jul 19 2005, 08:51 PM

I want to share a little story that I’ve never told before. I consider you guys like family and you know with all that is going on in the world right now, I think the time is right….

People often ask where I get the inspiration for building the World’s Lightest 914. Well my Grandmother gave me this picture of my Great Grandpa, Ury Woodbury and his lightweight racecar and it has stuck with me ever since. Every time I think I can't get it any lighter, I look at this picture and say to myself, “Cut it, drill it, don’t stop now, do it for Grampa Ury….” sawzall-smiley.gif

Sadly I never met Grampa Ury. As my Grandma tells it, he was doing an autocross one day and a tornado whipped up and sucked him and the car away. Never to be seen again. sad.gif

This one’s for you Grandpa.beer.gif I love you, man…. wub.gif

I asked my Grandma about that number too.
She said he wasn't too good with numbers. confused24.gif
But he was real good at fixn' stuff.

Racin' seemed to run in the family. Here is a picture of his brother.

He gave up racin' shortly after this picture was taken.

Cousin?

You mean the man with one leg in the middle of the picture?

No, sorry I don't know him. My family is German.

Yes, it's #4 of a little known car that Porsche made from 1910, thru 1916.

It's the 014.

I especially like those fenders. I can see where Paul got his metal working skills! laugh.gif

Hehe, I always wondered where the "URY" came from. You could lose some unsprung weight with some wheels like that. smile.gif
