Thx for posting that. Some of the same stuff that's going on today. That 8K six that needed paint caught my eye. Some other items were about the same as today. Good read. Thx again. beerchug.gif

Seems like yesterday. Has it really been that long?

1996. very_first_smiley[1].gif

I was 5 years into 914 ownership and 5 years away from an Internet connection.
The Automobile Atlanta Catalog and 'Mid-Engined Views' were my drugs back then.

I was just out of my 15 month military duty and about to start university. Had never owned a car and wouldnt have a P-car untill 2010.

I purchased my 914 back in 1990. Joined the 914 Owners Associaton immediately. Still have the sticker on my rear window. smile.gif
Does anybody know what happened to Dennis and the associaton? I lost track in the mid 90´s upon moving back to Germany.

Greetings

That wasn't really part of how the "club" was formed but IIRC the the admin of this other club was shuttering/abandoning the website and allowed the new club to take over the domain.
The new 914club was built from scratch, ì was a beta tester before the 914club was officially open, that's why I have a lower member number than founding member SirAndy,

Mr. Deeds, what a great guy,
single handedly put that little mag out.
thats how you did it pre internet.
i've still got my little collection of his newsletters.

somewhere i have got a letter from him, when i wrote off and made contact and he wrote back.

he was at the end of something.
thank god a new generation took it on and the car on too, its been somehow eternally loved despite the nay sayers..

the sub title of the newsletter says it all.
there were two separate organisations.
them with the "real" ones and the vw owners.
terrible really the early days of the 914.
same vibe persisted in aus when i got the car back here.
i was not welcome. not a real porsche.
its all history, history is great, tells a story.

(and mark henry, you are right on, your starter motor fix is the sh$t mate beerchug.gif
wish i had read that in MEV).

The '914 Club' was formed in 1995. The '914 Renegade Forum' was launched in 1996 as part of the club. I was the founding member of the club. I personally launched the forum with the help of folks like Glenn Stazak, Perry Kiehl, Rich Johnson, Dave Darling and others providing content. I gathered data and did the html programming myself for all the pages and then added the forum for user interaction.

Attached Image

It was in the early years of online platforms. Around 2000, I gifted the club and website to the folks on the west coast as I did not have the time to continue moderating it.

If you look at the site and click on '914 Forum' you will see the initial post posted by myself welcoming all to the first 914 online presence.

In a way, "history" begins when we begin to look back and search for documentation in order to create an archive, a living memory - oddly the history of entities created during the digital age may survive far longer than the reams of scrolls - containing humankind's millennia of knowledge - that were tragically burned in Alexandria and elsewhere throughout Time . . .

I already see some threads that remind me of looking at the back of an old Road & Track and seeing a "tired, old" classic Ferrari for sale for what would be "peanuts" today . . .

I sense a classic thread here . . .

Actually, Dennis is alive and well. MEV #107 just came out.

Mid-Engined Views Issue #107 will be ready to download in a few days. A partial list of some of the issue's articles is show below. If you're not currently a member of the Porsche 914 Owners Association and the Porsche 914-6 Club USA, you can join at www.914driver.com or www.everything914.com . Issue #107 comes with a link to an additional multi-page document you can use for keeping track of maintenance and expenses related to your 914.

I think maybe 914World should start a '914 Hall of Fame'.

Recognizing people who had an impact on the early 914 community.

I would nominate Dennis Deeds, Glenn Stazak, Perry Kiehl, Rich Johnson and of course you would have to include George Hussey.

Who would you nominate?

Charlie Davis - He got PCA to implement the Special Interest Groups and founded the 914 SIG.

Ed Mayo - Still the PCA 914 Tech rep.

Wes Hildreth - Creator of the Hildreth award. 914 Dealer mechanic when they were new. I learned a whole lot from him.

I got my 914 the year my son was born in 2001, I remember there wasn't much daily active other than pelican forums. I did find a local member and bought my first parts cart on a message board, likely the early 914 club. Rennlist was not much more than a message board but it did have excellent how to's. I was active on the bird forum when the new club was in the planning stages during 2001 and started testing during the 2001 Christmas break. The new 914club went on line officially just after the new year in 2002.

That is IIRC...I'm getting old, I have a good memory... but it's short laugh.gif

I met Betty in 85, and meeting her is what started this ongoing adventure with 914s. But we didn't have a clue about the internet at that time. She had a Tandy Color computer, I had a Commodore Vic 20. Neither had a modem.

Our 914 info came from various catalogs, and from asking questions of a lot of people, like Ed Mayo and Wes Hildreth. Back then it was "tear it apart and see if we can fix it". Now it is "Go look on World and see if anyone else has already done it."

Some number of years ago, I believe Dennis compiled all the 914-6 newsletters into a big PDF and made them available on CD. I had access to the full Adobe program and split them back out into individual years. 1979 thru 1987.
I think think this was issue #1.
Probably need to check with Dennis about making them available...

Good ole days. Lots of names I hadn't seen in many moons.

I was still a newbie in the renegade days, back when we still thought you could turbo a 914.
Silly friggin us ;-)

I 'member we had problems with the renegade site and Brad threw together the 914club website so we could have a place to play, that was how THIS place eventually came to be.

I got involved in 1991, right after getting my first 914. I had a co-worker who was a 911 owner, and not only got me into Porsches, and autocrossing, but also onto the Porschephiles mailing list.

That went south, in large part because there was one guy trying to maintain and do everything, and because it was for all Porsches and the activity level was overwhelming.

I think I learned about Tim's Fan Page there? Not sure. He had great info, and eventually a fairly small forum. At one point, Tim stopped maintaining the page in part because he had gotten a MR-2 Spyder and was making a similar page for that. I think he also sold the company that had been hosting the pages, and while they agreed to keep them around they didn't add anything new.

I'm pretty sure I read about Pelican on porschephiles, but I'm not sure I started sending them content until later.

Unka Dunka (John Dunkle) and probably a bunch of other folks then set up Rennlist, after some mis-steps. (I think "porschelist" and possibly "porschefans" was earlier but they had to change the name when Porsche noticed them.) That one exploded into web-based forums, web hosting, and a bunch of other stuff. Dunkle sold it a while ago, and the web forums seem to be the main part now.

I found the Renegade page in the early 90s, and they had a very active BBS. *VERY* active! I think that rattled to a halt after the Jeff sold DGI? Again, the buyer signed up to keep things as-is, but they didn't put any new work into it.

Randy started up Roadglue somewhat later, and it had a reasonably active forum.

Eventually the folks on Rennlist started talking about a 914club website, which I finally joined.

I never really made it onto ClubNARP.

And here we are!

Nice to see some of the folks from back then are still posting! I didn't associate your names (or your old user names) with your current user names.

This brought back some memories!

I got my first 914 in '99, and met John Larson (Cap'n Krusty), who introduced me to Mike Z, who helped me get signed up on Rennlist. Then came 914Club, then ClubNARP, then 914World. I've met a lot of great people, learned a lot about 914's, owned more of them than I could name right now (buy 3 junkers, build 1 good car, sell off the excess parts, repeat.....). I haven't had a 914 in years, and without the local shop support, I doubt I'll own another one, but I'm on here daily. This is a great group of folks.
