Cool pin stripe - it's like a designer's style line; they picked up the bottom of the turn signal - top of the wheel arch, bottom of the door handle pocket and likely some to the rear.

The 1972 914/6 are interesting cars. A few steps forward, and a few steps back. Along with the 914/4 steering column and ignition switch, it appears the windshield washer is the 914/4 system. Were the upper front suspension mounts painted with tar like the earlier 914/6 or without tar like the 914/4?
Please look carefully for the Karmann body # in the rear trunk. It should be in the right rear corner near the right tail light with the form of 1320xxx where xxx should be close to the last three digits of the VIN.
Please get a photo of the VIN on the right inner fender and the paint badge .
There should also be a handwritten production # (may or may not be exactly the same as the Karmann body #) on the underside of the dash on the removable rear part.

I hope this is not the case!!
This needs to be done properly! The way this is going, rust is going to come through within a couple years after paint.
This is just the tip of the iceberg. You need to cut the entire sail panel off and blast behind there. I'm sorry to say, but this is not the correct way to be doing a restoration on a 914

I cut the rust panel at the limit + 1MM on both sides.
I use primer filler pro before welding the new part.

Just keep in mind brazing is much like a glue and sticks different metals together but never becomes one like welding. Welding is where there is intermixing of all metals associated with the weld area/HAZ and becomes one thus less likely of future rust.
I teach welding and have for 20 years so not arm chair quarterbacking this statement. As long as you have removed all the rust brazing is an OK solution just not a Great solution.

The upper front suspension mounts painted with tar like the earlier 914/6.
and
this what I found on it
too much rust in the rear trunk but we can read 4 so I believe it's the same Karmann body number.

i understand!
i ensure you I have removed all the rust. personally i prefer use brazing when it's curved and thin. hop isn't the worst solution.

Your car has great potential but needs much care.
Where is that floor from ?
It is advisable to stabilize the door openings (and more) before doing the substantial
welding necessary...... to avoid disappointing results.
Bon chance.

my hats off. thats a shit load of rust.
i don't think that car spent its entire life in a french colonial outpost in africa?
its full of dirty french salt euro corrosion?
but you know, our american friends just rip into it with their rusted out east coast "barn finds". aussies would pooh their pants confronted with that.
love the way you are just going for it. its going to work or it won't.
good luck and what a car you will have if you can keep it all straight and aligned after you tear its guts out. i am sure you can do it. i mean that. i want you to pull it off.

I would like to know what is the best alternative to restore my 914/6 and increase its selling value.
Keep engine stock or performance rebuild?
Posted by: gereed75 May 24 2021, 05:36 AM
Khaled, Not sure what the attitude is in your part of the world but since you do not have the original motor anyway, I would think a 2.2 or 2.4 carbureted S motor would be an “attractive” choice.
What motor came in most ‘72 sixes from the factory?

Given the extensive metalwork that your car has needed and the approach you've
taken you should feel free to go with a higher performance engine.
Without the original engine you have good reason to do as you like.
Posted by: Cairo94507 May 24 2021, 07:10 AM
Since your original 2.0 911 T motor is gone (sadly) the replacement depends upon what your finances can handle. I think any of the 911 motors are terrific in these cars. Of course a bit of horsepower/torque in a 914 is always fun.

Number matched cars always fetch more money. If you put a different engine in the car, keep the original engine to sell with the car.

Please tell how you connected with the original engine.
Was it in Algeria ?
As for stock or modified I'd correct the known faults of that era engine and modify it
without changing the block beyond return to stock.
Build a 2.0S or a 2.2 S

I asked the former owner where the engine was exchanged. luckily the mechanic is still there. Then the engine was sold in France and since it stayed with the same owner.
I asked Mittlemotor for an upgrade, they told me its possible to increase it power to 200/220 HP

The blue circled hole is not original. The green circled hole is for the fuel pump wire.
Don't loose the two hole plugs they're hard to find.
The single fuel supply hose for a 6 goes through the open oval hole with a black tubing grommet.

Red circle = factory plugged rain tray drain? On a 1972 914-6 maybe they left them stamped, then plugged them?

They were plugged on all 6s....no rain tray
Only one fuel delivery on a 6, other oval hole plugged in engine tray
The oval nylon plug is a tough one to find.

The sixes had the holes stamped for the rain tray drains, and they had a plastic plug in them from the factory.

Your car has some features that are not found on '70-'71 year 914 6s
The recoil seat belt mounts and later jack mount seem odd at first but are found on
all 1972 model year 914s
Did it have two movable seats ?

Love this thread, so much new metal going into this 914-6.
Question: You using a flux core welder? Seems like a lot of slag being tossed around.

thats very interesting to hear, so you can't use replacement panels cut from a donor car, you have to either get new repro panels or fabricate new?
i can sympathise with the customs hit. australia is a country full of sheep that find it hard to walk around. it used to be much worse 30 years ago, you had to go and have a good lie down after customs finished with you.

yes we can use panels from a donor car(only if the vehicle is already in Algeria).
for the moment I never found an other 914/6 or 4 in Algeria.
we can buy some little parts (accessories) shipped by DHL.

I’m intrigued by that splittie on the rotisserie behind the 914. Would love to see a few more angles.

I bought two 914/6 engines from 1972.
I didn't think I'd be able to find his engine one day.
if anyone is interested in the second engine do not hesitate to write to me, it will be completely revised with new carburettors.

Those are interesting. are they stock "buckets" ventilated with drilled holes and a fabricated top cover over some type of oval filter element?
Seems I see the remnants of the mounts for the stock wire clips.
Have kind of a neat boy racer rat Rod look.

I'm going to reassemble the vehicle and check the gaps before paint I wouldn't like have any unpleasant surprises!

hi that really looks great!
Reminds me of my gt tribute car build.
In the pictures I‘m missing the provisions for mounting front and rear stabilizer.
Don‘t you intend to mount them ?

Hi Khaled,
you should search the forum for pictures. You will find more than one thread regarding that topic.
As a hint, the front stabilizer bar goes underneath the fuel tank. There you will need to drill a couple of holes for the mounting screws.
For the rear one, you need to weld on a bracket.
Compared to your past work not much work to do, but it would be a pitty to make the mounting provisions after completing the car.
