Hi, I'm a new member! I am thinking of buying a 1972 914/4 with Chalon kit. Would any member know what it takes to restore the body back to original? Would i need a donor car?
Thank you!
My gut says:
1) front bumper
2) Front fenders
3) Rear sail panel and fenders
4) rear bumper
Then there will be niggling things.. and then the chance that once you remove all the chalon kit you will find the usual rust or even accident repair issues (many chalon kits were added to cars that had issues, vs brand new rust free examples for instance)
I think it comes down to your goals and what is available near you as to what would be a good start to 914 ownership.
I would get a pre purchase inspection specifically looking for hidden rust.
It turns out mine was very clean as apparently the conversion had been done a LONG time ago.
Barefoot
Best guess is about $15K from a shop. Better off with a clean $5k tub.
I would either buy it knowing you are OK/Like the Chalon kit or pick another car.
Only really worth it if it's a six.
