914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Engine bay seals Production run?

Posted by: Mikey914 Jul 21 2005, 12:10 AM

I'm not sure about you, but I've been looking around at the cost and availability of engine compartment seals, and I'm amazed at how expensive these are. Mine were all baked off from a fire, and I must replace all.

I can make these, but to break even on the die I need to find 40 people that would buy them at $50.

I might just have them made if there is enough serious interest.

I'm not sure that there's that much interest, that's why I thought I might post this to see.

Also as I understand there are 2 different seals I above the engine, and the other 3 sides are the same.

If all 4 are the same the cost would be significantly less as only one die would be required.

I'm not looking to get rich, I just want to get some parts at a more reasonable cost.

i think that's a great idea! smilie_pokal.gif

i for one would buy a set. mine are not too bad but have a few cracks. good used ones are hard to come by ...

i'd buy a set for $50 ...

as for the top seal, i *think* they're all the same. someone else hopefully chimes in here ...

if by "top" you mean the rear... it's differentvery different

I'd be in for $50... that's 1/4 the price! and the front is NLA, but it's just like the sides in profile... only longer

Posted by: lapuwali Jul 21 2005, 11:05 AM

I'd buy a set at that price, now that I'm sticking with air-cooled power...

to which i replied "i don't think so" ...

but yes, the TOP seal is different than the 3 surrounding seals ...

Mikey, I just bought the 3 sides, but was fortunate to be able to reuse the rear. Even though I don't need a set today, I think this is a great price and product that the 914 community would definately use. smilie_pokal.gif

I'll buy a set if it makes a difference.

$50 is a great price. But if this deal doesn't work out, Don at GPR sells the set (all 4) for $80.

I bought a set from him. Good fit and quality.

Sounds like there is enough interest. Does anyone have some dead seals that about 2" would be good. I need to get samples for production.

Hey I know...you could buy my set (of three) on eeeeeBay right now...

No one has bid yet, but there are alot of people watching this auction. Someone might look into the other VW cars...busses?...any Karmann product that might be similar and use similar extrusions.

Anyone have a small section of the rear elisive seal?

Posted by: Grimstead Jul 22 2005, 03:25 PM

If this works out, how long are we talking. confused24.gif
Just wondering...

Posted by: Mikey914 Jul 23 2005, 01:43 AM

I need to submit final drawings, which I can do after I find a sample. 2-3 weeks for article of first extrusion, production rum about 2 weeks after. Should be able to start shipping 5-6 weeks, if the first runs looks good.

you still need a cross-section of the rear?

I'll cut a piece off mine if needed.

Posted by: maxwelj Jul 28 2005, 07:34 AM

I'd be in for a set as well. I do have a rear one for a pattern if you need it. It's a bit hard, but should be able to get the idea. the only question I have is if the /6 is the same as the /4?

Posted by: Mikey914 Jul 29 2005, 09:08 PM

Thanks, I understand that I have a sample inbound at this time. Should have beginning of next week.

Posted by: dmenche914 Jul 30 2005, 01:04 AM

The rear seal sure looks close in shape to that used on a VW Bug (old Bugs) U think one would work, although you might need two for the full length.

Question on the reproduction seals, what material will they be made out of? some rubbers survive the motor bay enviroment much better than others. Which rubber do you plan on using?

I'd take two sets also.

I emailed Mikey914 to let him know that there was renewed interest and folks asking about status. We'll see...

Posted by: Marty Yeoman Sep 27 2005, 01:01 PM

Yea, what's going on with this.
Any further progress???

Posted by: Brando Sep 27 2005, 06:27 PM

If there will be a production run for these, put me down for a complete set.

Posted by: Hammy Oct 3 2005, 05:01 PM

If these will be ready in the next month or so, I'd be in for a set.
But what's the status? confused24.gif

Posted by: Grimstead Oct 3 2005, 05:13 PM

i'm thinking that by the lack of a responce, this is a dead issue. sad.gif

Posted by: bottomend Oct 3 2005, 08:56 PM

Engine is out and I'm rebuilding it. good time for new seals... is this still happening?

Posted by: 9146986 Oct 4 2005, 07:42 AM

I'm thinking that he's found out a extrusion die is going to cost him between $1500-$3000! So, for 50 sets it's going to cost an average of $50 each just for the tooling. Just a guess, but I've got some extrusion die purchasing experience wink.gif

Posted by: Vacca Rabite Oct 4 2005, 07:45 AM

I am in for a set.

Three letters gents.... GPR - $80.00 set. Can't beat that with a stick.

Posted by: Mikey914 Feb 20 2006, 11:36 PM

Well it's not dead yet. I finnally got the bugs worked out. I looked at several vendors and when it came time to cut dies prices went up, or there was some other issue. After looking at high temp silicone, and several other materials. Original rubber is the best for abrasion resistance, resistance to oil&gas, and cost.

The die costs are steep enough that I only want to cut one at a time. It makes sense to cut the die for the front and sides first. Pricing will be about the same.

I can to one left, one right and the front for $40 + $8.10 flat rate priority mail for all 3.

Before there was enough interest, If there is about the same amount of interest I will cut the first die.

Time frame is 2 weeks for the die, production run about 2 more weeks. Payment will be when they are ready to ship.

Who's still in?

Posted by: JOHNMAN Feb 20 2006, 11:56 PM

I would focus on the rear seal since that is the one NLA.

Pelican has the two sides and front for $44.25

Posted by: Mikey914 Feb 21 2006, 01:18 AM

Maybe the upper rear is the way to go. I couldn't find the listing for the seals you referenced at Pelican. I started this project as I was frustrated at having to buy short seals and wasn't able to find the front one. I'm sure that at the very least some other member will benifit.
