My guess, is that its a 75-76 CA-model (because of the EGR hole at the rear tin) 2.0L with backdated 73-74 HEs, going in/out of a 914/6 chassis.

That and they used the crimp on insulated wire terminal at the starter - inelegant.

Yup, looks like body is prepped for a 6. Front engine supports on each side look deleted.

The trans mount bolts are installed wrong. The head should be at the bottom. That allows them to be removed without removing the mount. Almost everyone gets this wrong.

you guys are sharp as I expected. This was not staged, just a four cylinder powerplant we are checking for a guy in pakistan behind a real 914-6 body we are rust repairing. Struck me as funny this morning

I've seen them captive for so long I though it was correct and a very curious choice
for the factory assembly process.
The factory pic is a surprise. Never noticed it before.

diagram from the parts book is interesting.

opposite of factory workshop manual.
illustration photos in fwm show nuts on bottom and bolts captive.

fwm instructs bolts on front mounts to be torqued and rear mount nuts to be torqued. awkward to get a torgue wrench on a nut on top of the engine mount? you could get it on the bolt, but not the nut?
maybe it could be done ....?

fresh in my mind. we put new mounts in 18months ago.
pretty sure we pulled original trans mounts out. 99% sure.
evidence pointed to engine and trans never out of car.
can't speak for first 15 years and first owner.
i've never dropped it since 89 until 18 months ago.
had a paper factory build sticker still on gear box. sprayed undercoat intact in areas of mount etc.
found a photo before we started work, mounts visible in photos, nuts are down.
