914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Engine cuts out

Posted by: ted Jul 24 2005, 09:55 AM

My '74 1.8 starts and runs fine for a while. Then it begins to buck or cut out. At firsy it is very intermittant, but becomes more frequent as it is driven until it becomes a neck-snapping experience. The car is all original and fuel injected. I am not a mechanic, so responses must be basic. Non of the local mechanics that have looked at the car seem to have a clue. I am in central Ohio - suggestions for knowlegeable repair shops would be welcome. laugh.gif HELP

Check all of the wires that attach to the coil.
Clean all the terminals. Make certain that the wire's are tight and not arcing.
If U can, watch it idle in the dark. Look for arcing.
All of your wires are 30+ years old. If there anything like mine, the insulation has become brittle and cracked. Replace them.
Good Luck smile.gif

Just had this on my 1.8L

Also. look at the wire from the fuseblock, to the coil, related to the safety belt interlock.. cut that wire.
