Hello everyone,
I am in the process of converting a '74 914 to a subaru engine and transmission. There are threads related to my question but are well over 10 years old and don't answer this one specifically.
What VW bus CV axle length do I need to order?
I'm looking to make a hybrid axle using the subarugears standard adapter (subaflanges), a VW 100mm Bus axle, and the outer CV joint of the Bus axle will be replaced with the 914 outer CV and stub shaft.
When I look up axles for VW busses, kombi, T2, etc... I'm not sure what years to look up and then which length to choose. for example. if I lookup on Rockauto a 1969 VW transporter: drivetrain/CV Axle... I get 3 options for the compressed lengths:
VW8045 - 18 29/32"
VW8064 - 18"
VW8065 - 19 7/8"
A 2" spread there seems significant to me and I'm not in a position to measure exactly what I need yet, so any help would be appreciated. (it could be something completely different, like 15", for all I know.)
Thanks,
Jeff
I received the adapters for the subaru stub axle to 100mm inner CV joint, and did some measuring.
The face where the inner CV joint mounts is moved out 7/8". The porshe 914 axle lenght being 20.25" means a new axle would need to be 19.375" (19 3/8")
The closest axle measurement I've found is actually a floating axle of 19 1/4". the spline length is over 2 inches longer. I believe this would do away with the cupped spring washer, and any additional spacers.
example:
https://swayaway.com/product/axle-set-33-tooth-vw-irs-16-14-long-33-spline/
I assume a type 2 VW bus axle is also 19 1/4", but I don't really see anything in the CV axles assys that specify the axle length; just the compressed length. I believe these axle assys have a slightly different spline length and would require a spacer between the shoulder and the spring washer for the porshce 914 outer CV joint.
Anyone know of a down side or problems with going to a floating axle? other than cost. Or is this actually the prefered way to go?
Thanks,
Jeff
According to Eric, floating is preferred. http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=91963
Which Subaru drive train are you running? Big ass tires? Intended use i.e. track or canyons & street use? 4 lug or 5 lug set up?
I'm new here, so I'll assume Eric is someone who knows what he is talking about.
I think I saw the thread a while ago, but since I had no intentions of using 911/944/930 parts, or 5 lug conversion, I missed the floating axle part.
I'm using a 3.0L H6 with a 5 speed manual trans. I'm just planning it to be a regular driver, not a race/track car, stock 4 lug, stock size tires, stock suspention, etc.
