914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Bumperettes

Hi there, does anyone know the exact thread / size of the 'bumperette' mounts that are on 74's front and rear chrome bumpers ?

I'm looking to remove them and to cover the two holes that each ones has.

If you'd know where to buy these 'plugs' it'd be helpful too...

I was able to find these on the w.w.w., but seller's unsure whether they work... :

https://www.ebay.com/itm/173781379742?mkevt=1&mkpid=0&emsid=e11051.m43.l1123&mkcid=7&ch=osgood&euid=4e3d2b875190447eb4dcb1e0dcb8dc8c&bu=43133670231&osub=-1%7E1&crd=20210913111121&segname=11051&sojTags=ch%3Dch%2Cbu%3Dbu%2Cosub%3Dosub%2Ccrd%3Dcrd%2Csegname%3Dsegname%2Cchnl%3Dmkcid

Thank you in advance, and happy 9.14 y'all smile.gif

I don't have the car in my possession yet, so can't measure as of right now, that's why I was asking if anyone knows the exact size before hand. But thanks for the link, very usefull !

I used chrome classic bug bumper bolts. I wish I used better quality ones. They are already rusty. I’m going to get some stainless ones and replace them but they fit and look good.

Could you possibly measure these and share the size here on the thread pls ?

Thank you...

I want to find some better ones that won’t rust.

The hole is just over 5/16th or 9mm give or take.

I would take a trip to Home Depot once the bumperettes are off and see what fits best until you find something better.

I used the black oxide Torx bolts (and backing nuts) from a NA Miata convertible mounts. Plenty of those hanging about from Spec Miata builds...

Someone mentioned the hole is slightly over 5/16”, homedepot has them in chrome:

Try Ace Hardware or any other hardware type store for chrome cap bolts. I have 2 in my front bumper filling the front license plate bracket holes. Fit perfectly and look fine. beerchug.gif

I used the front holes for small day time running lights. I'm going to install the same in the rear bumper, using inside holes for brake and the outside holes for turn signals.
I might try the moving turn signal blinker like the new cars have.

they are 8mm but I would leave the bumper guards, they protect the bumper and front and rear body structure from more serious damage. PLUS the front bumper guards make the car look more attractive as it lengthens the nose a bit

I have often wondered if the teeny bumperettes on the 75-76 bumpers could be substituted in for the larger 1974s?

Posted by: 914sgofast2 Sep 15 2021, 10:34 AM

The chrome bumper mounting bolts from 1969 and newer VW Bugs fit right in.

Posted by: IronHillRestorations Sep 15 2021, 06:41 PM

The chrome screws for the glovebox work well for that

Someone had them on an early bumper at the Northeast 914 Gathering on the rear. It looked a little peculiar to me but to each his own. My car is not bone stock and I’m sure some people look at it and say “what was he thinking?”.

I happen to like the holes , it makes the car go faster shades.gif

IIRC, the holes do not line up completely so you have to drill one new hole per bumperette. The angles on the front also do not match completely, so the ends will be a little tilted.

Ditto on Ace Hardware plugs Here is my 73. Sorry about the bugs LOL.Attached Image

I have a question pertaining to keeping the tits on. My 72' has a bumper made of no more than sheet metal. It didn't take much to dent. I just never considered it a bumper at all, more like a sheet metal finish panel. Did they put some type of backing or brace on the later bumper to keep the bumper from collapsing when the tit made contact with something solid? I've never looked at one. Thanks

I found some chrome plated carriage bolts at Ace Hardware to plug the holes.
