I'm re-doing the basket weave on my '70 914 6 dashboard.
Saw a beautiful ashtray at Ski Rountop and brought it home.
I removed my original not-so-clean original ashtray and noticed it has a feature
I've never seen before, it has a plastic 'window' that would allow a small bulb to
illuminate the open ashtray.
I see no lamp socket in the area or room to mount one, but there is an opening in
the mount for the tray to allow the light through.
It's easy to check.....anyone else ?
One further observation.....all mounts have the window.......of my eight eight ashtrays only one has the plastic window.

Well son of a gun. Went and looked, 72' has no window.
Might be a base from a 911?
Maybe it is the emergency light for the ashtray-it illuminates when your ashtray is full and on fire.
I turned my ashtray into a light (or at least a new location for the interior light).

Finally got a look at another 1970 914..... a 6 as well
It too has an ash tray with the light window.
Is this a partial early car feature that never got fully developed for production ? a 914 6 only item ?
There is no wiring loom feature for a bulb and no space for a socket above
the ash tray mount.
Take a look at your ash tray, it's easy and may reveal an ineresting dead end
in the 914 story.

@http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showuser=5176 I never noticed that before so I looked thru my stash of 12 and I did find 1
Our '70, production date 1/70 has the window.
My 1/70 production date 6 ashtray has the window
My 1970 with a December 1969 production date has the window too. It’s a 1.7 liter four cylinder car.
