914World.com _ 914World Garage _ Fog Light Grill Pitted Chrome

Posted by: GeorgeKopf Oct 2 2021, 08:47 PM

My fog light grills were splotched with green corrosion. I soaked them in a diluted vinegar solution and removed it all.

It looks like they had coated the plastic in copper before applying chrome.

I'm wondering if a chrome shop would be able to repair and re-chrome.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks.

Yes, in many cases, parts are copper plated then nickel plated and finally chrome plated.
The nickel layer needs a base to be plated onto, and the copper serves that function on steel & plastic. The bright nickel layer is what you see, and the transparent chrome layer is there to protect the nickel from tarnishing.

You should offer the screws and clips with the grills.

Still haven't installed mine yet, can't manage to remember to pick up the screws when I'm at Ace. Cars only been on the road a month though.
